I do think the carriage has to do some of this and yes it make to
operational movements all done
at once?

Agree that one pass is required to eliminate transitions.  Tim's suggestion
made me think of the wave modification, a device that can rotate the 
work piece a specific amount at a specific place in the travel.  
But I think Curt was referring to some sort of clutch that engages and 
disengages the gears on demand.  That would indeed be smoother than
two index plates because it is difficult to move the pins accurately on 
the move.  Now, suppose a wave device and a clutch worked together
...
