I haven’t been to Tahquamenon Falls in 60 years. Beautiful place.
Imagine the forces built up in that tree. Would it be like cutting a wooden
mainspring if it ever were felled?

Re: log cutting

2023-03-15 Thread Joseph Greenleaf
That’s quite a tree. It looked like the saw was struggling.
There’s a U.S. Navy squared-rigged wooden warship, hundreds of years old,
moored in Boston Harbor. She is the USS Constitution but her nickname is
“Old Ironsides.” Cannonballs from our English friends bounced off her
timber sides and the sailors gave her that nickname.
Your wood would laugh at mere cannonballs.

Re: videos

2023-01-10 Thread Joseph Greenleaf
There are exceptions to the copyright laws. Fair use is one. While I
wouldn’t POST anything on YouTube, I’d be comfortable sharing amongst us.
Most (all?) of the copyright infringement actions are for commercial sales.
We don’t charge anything.
Remember, Legacy is the copyright owner. Are they going to sue us, their
loyal minions? I’d be stunned if we even got a nastygram.
As for viewing a video after searching for Legacy? Have at it. With a
YouTube Red subscription—$15/month—you can save videos and the ones you
watch have no ads.
You can always copy videos you own.
Enjoy. The Black helicopters won’t come after you.

Re: youtube

2022-11-04 Thread Joseph Greenleaf
People have been sued for copyright infringement by film studios but the
general rule is, if you buy a DVD, for instance, you can make a copy for
your own use. You cannot sell it, nor can you post it on YouTube or
elsewhere.
People do, of course.
Is it illegal to watch a pirated video? I don’t think so. Would I, knowing
it was stolen? No.
The famous movie, Its a Wonderful Life’s copyright was accidentally not
renewed and it was “out there” for years and years.
I agree that creating your own videos is best. I suggest you add a
copyright notice on it, to alert the grit-eating world that it is
copyrighted.
I talked with a well-known author who had one of his novels stolen by some
jerk in India, warts and all. The Indian then sold it on Amazon until the
real author could convince Amazon to shut him down.
The average YouTube viewer sees commercials, but if you pay for a YouTube
Red account (around $15/month), as I do, you can download any video on
YouTube to your YouTube account. Is that illegal? For my $15, I presume
that YouTube is paying royalties to the copyright holder.
I’ve written around eight books and I’m always concerned about copyright
infringers.
It is a filthy business.

Re: youtube

2022-11-04 Thread Joseph Greenleaf
Happy to help. YouTube itself has posted a video from the US Copyright
office that says much the same thing.
Many people think you can take a copyrighted photo and reverse the image,
change it to B, or do something to it and that magically removes the
copyright. It does not.
As I said before, a work’s copyright expires 70 years after the creator’s
death, and thus become part of the public domain.
Disney Corporation was heavily involved in the 1977 law so they wouldn’t
lose Mickey Mouse.

Good afternoon all,

I have a little update on Arkady's progress:
So as of yesterday they received permission to live and work in Germany for 3
months, with extensions expected.
The German language continues to be a barrier for him and his wife and will
cause some challenges for being able
to find work.
They do have phone app translators but that only can go so far.
However, he just notified me that they are able to go to Stadtallendorf for a
German language course. Problem is it's
a long drive and of course with lack of income and today's gas prices this too
will be a bit challenging.
but being on the positive side of things this is a huge step for Arkady and his
wife.

My wife and I are considering donating additional funds to help him along, so
anyone else that is willing
Arkady still could use more help.
I appreciate all your thoughts and Prayers for them and all the Ukrainian
people.

This is NOT a Legacy video, but one that uses some very neat machinery.

The Details and multi steps in making these pool cues is a wonder.

Some of the machines shown in the process of making these pool cues, just might
have some spin off's for us to use, (LOM.)

In the very worst case this is a neat/ fun video to watch, in the best... It
just might help people get the motivation to make there own. ;-)

That’s good to know, Curt. I watch a lot of YouTube videos and often will
use the closed caption feature but I was not aware of the translation. I’m
sure much of it is humorous. Some YouTube presenters simply have no
language whatsoever, sort of like the old wordless workshop. I presume it
is because they don’t speak English, but that doesn’t seem to always be the
case.

The spindles are 14 7/8" tall, 1 1/2" dia. with a 4" pitch. Both right and
left handed pitches. The wood is Cherry,

I learned a lot on this project. (or re-learned things I though I already
knew.) Cherry burns easily. and when cutting across the grain, you not only
need to keep a keen (sharp) edge, but the profile angle of the router bit must
also be keep clean in order to stop burning. (Thanks Mike. helping me on this
one.)

When I cut the ropes I got a lot of burning, no matter if I took light cuts or
not, My problem ended up being pitch on the profile of the router bit, (I keep
the cutting edge honed and sharp, but it didn't help much.)

While sanding the burn marks out, the sanding changed the look of the roping
slightly. Something that add Charterer to the project, (I hope?) "Any-How "
since the ship and the lights are the focus points, my mess-ups don't look so
bad? (but that just me talking, Mr. G. liked them, So I guess I did a good
enough job on this, to get me by?)

The spindle's have a 1 1/8" tenon cut on the ends, they are glued and pined
into place on the end boards.

Re: REVO Pics & Electricity

2020-05-29 Thread Joseph Greenleaf
What I have always seen in the US of A are multiples of 240 so you have
440, 660 and so forth.
I have not heard of 415, but I suspect that is probably due to losses in
the three-phase converter. If the machine was designed for 440 and you run
it at 415, you are making it sad.
There are two kinds of converters. The original, nicknamed buzz-boxes, had
a motor in it and that allowed the conversion to three phase. They made a
serious amount of noise. The new kind is solid state. They are not
completely quiet, but they are very much smaller.
The only time I would use one is if I got a good deal on a three-phase
machine and didn't want to change out the motor, or if I had a legacy
machine.
If I had three phase power available, everything I buy would be three phase
if it were an option.
There is plenty of power on the pole, something in excess of 14,000 volts
at my place, hence the single transformer which lowers it to 240 volts, but
it is only single phase.
I once picked up a V4 Kohler generator that was both cheap and monstrously
heavy. It was, in fact, three phase. So, I had the power but not the
equipment. I lugged the generator around for years and finally sold it off.
I was told by an old time electrician that I could tap single phase out of
that three-phase generator, but he didn't volunteer to do it and I didn't
want to turn into a crispy critter doing it myself.

Re: REVO PICS

2020-05-29 Thread Joseph Greenleaf
I'm not an electrician, but I have bumped up against the power issue many
times before.
The essence is, more power = more work, and easier work.
More power will also kill you quicker.
In the USA, the voltage is nominally 120 volts, sometimes seen as 110v (v
for volts).
This can vary from even as low as 80v and go much higher than 120v, because
of the grid.
Plugs in the USA have either 2 or 3 prongs.
3 prongs, the common tool plug, have a hot, a neutral, and a ground.
("Earth" in the UK and many other places).
In the USA, to get 240v (or 220v), there are two 120v "hots." (120 + 120).
In the UK and Ireland, where I used to live, there are 3 prongs, but one is
240v, one is neutral, and one is earth, or ground.
In America, and everywhere, you can have, say, 20 amp 120v outlets, and you
can have 20 amp 240v outlets. Ohm's Law, Power=I2R, which, without doing
the math (or "maths" in the British Isles), with more voltage, you have
more power (or wattage). More watts mean more work. A 60A circuit is 3
times more powerful than a 20A circuit.
Some devices can change from 120v to 240v by moving wires inside the motor.
They work better, stronger, cheaper, and sometimes quieter at 240v.
The commonly, 120v or 240v is 1 phase, or 1ph. 3-ph is much more efficient,
and electric motors don't generally need a starter component. (Not an
automotive starter).
To run a 3ph motor on a 1ph circuit, you need a converter box. They often
make alot of noise, and the motor usually isn't as efficient as 3ph coming
from the pole.
(If your power pole, or one nearby, has three transformers, you probably
have 3ph available.)
So, basic rule of thumb, if you have a choice between 120v or 240v, ALWAYS
go 240v. Ditto between 1ph and 3ph, although, like me, in the Tennessee
mountains, I don't have that option.

I'm amazed at how people don't wear personal safety equipment. A young man
in a welding class in town bent over and speared his eye on a sharp piece
of steel. Blinded and tossed from the course. Violated the safety glasses

Re: Things you can make with a turn table.

2019-01-14 Thread Joseph Greenleaf
EU/UK companies don't generally charge VAT if it is a foreign buyer. Usually,
if there is a ship-to address in the USA, there's no VAT.
Shipping on that should be under $10, and the duty, if any, is likely around
10%.

WOW!! As you said - that piece of "gearing" is EXPENSIVE. That will almost pay
for a Legacy-made Turntable. (That's ~$319 US based on the With VAT rate - but
does not include mailing + any Duty fees.) I've never ordered from The Kingdom
- so I don't know whether or not to use a With or Without VAT.

Hello Everyone,
I have just found this website
www.uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/1223444/
(Ouch, this example is particularly expensive for a 2m length)
The item is a flexible strip of cog teeth.
I would envisage making your own turn table out of a disc of MDF and
gluing/pinning this strip to the edge of the MDF.
I am not sure how the rotary table works mechanically, but there are others
available, if you do a google search for <>, I
expect there will be one that marries up to the tooth configuration on the
Legacy issue?

I would think that a 2' round table mounted between the rails on the Legacy.
