Re: Oval jig video

2024-01-28 Thread cdkr...@gmail.com
That's a relatively old technique of approximation. I learned about that
studying to do drafting of engineering drawings in the late 1950's. I've
seen that video posted on metal working sites I follow. Didn't get me
excited. I'm chasing Curt's shiny object in my head thinking how to
squash it flat. I'm attracted to the wide array of options that the
sun-planet
gear arrangement offers, and the notion is compatible with the gear making
equipment used to make driver, duplex, and index gearing for the LOM.

For example, if the planet-sun gear chain opens up to include "idler" gears
between, then the options for greater range of ratios and direction open.
The notion of using a tiny chain system is doable, but limiting a bit, e.g.
change of direction. Curt's "toy", an ornamental chuck, is an advanced
concept of this application.

So how much gearing can be squashed into 3/8" vertical space under a
table constrained to linear movement as it rotates on another platform?
Any clock makers in the group?

The principle behind this is that there are two slots guiding captive sliders.

Hello Everyone.

Thanks Bill for posting this.

I hope everyone enjoys the video?

the oval jig is both complex and simple at the same time.

The Planetary gear concept is what makes this jig work.

The "Sun" gear is stationary (it dose NOT move when the table moves.) The
planate gear moves around the Sun. This planate gear has a adjustable pivot
point which makes the table move as the gears rotate.

I Hope you all enjoy this video, Hopefully you all will try to make something
like this for your self's.

Please let me know what you think?

I am very happy to hear that Bill.

For me the Trick was to make the Sun Gear, so it moves/dose not move, with the
table turning. As you can see in the photo, there is a ball bearing seat with
a rod that runs through the table, the gear is pinned under the table so it
will not move with the table as it turns.

If there is anything that I can do to help, just ask.

Please let me know what you think?

under the table I have a bracket that hooks up to the base. I do not have a
photo of this. (YET)but the Sun Gear cannot move although the table dose. the
planate gear is attached to the table, so the planate gear turns. (like our
world dose as it moves around the sun.)

Re: Oval jig video

2024-01-22 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
Yes under the rails would be a good idea for this type of rotary table. I
think I can still re-work my supports so I can do this in the future. but for
now, I am just happy that this proto type is working. If I were going to change
anything on this jig. it would be to make the Sun Gear more Robust, (the rod is
to small, if the gears jam I know it will bend.) a 1/2" rod would have been a
better choice. (but I did not want to ruin my vac. port on this table, so I
keep it to 1/4" so it would fit through the 1/8" piping that the vac. uses.)
Have a good night.
