RE: Want to put a motor my 1200

2020-07-22 Thread 'Denson Ingram' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
Since this tread was started for me I have installed a motor on my 1200. I have
also bought some gears. I need help in identifying some of the gears. The first
was marked ½ in black on one side and .50 on the other. Is there a .50 re
duction gear
Set?

I also want to see if I have identified the 2X multiplier set correctly.

I like it!  The setup doesn't look too terribly complicated.  I'm guessing the
complicated part comes when setting up Mach 3 for the travel, etc.  I'll
definitely be hanging on to this email chain.

Just echoing what other people have already said...  any additional details you
want to throw in will be greatly received (ie, videos, walk-throughs, etc.).

Thanks Dustin!  ...and well done!

Hello.Very nice work.  One request, How about a over view of the hole unit?
The up close is very nice, but I am getting lost in the details. ;-)  And I
agree with Bill, I video would be nice. Thank you.

Ok, I finally got around to posting. If anyone has questions, please ask. The
reason I did this exactly the way I did was because I wanted to be able to
reverse it all and go back to a regular legacy. The only hole I drilled into
the legacy was into the rotary axis to tap a thread. I added a UHMW block to
the gantry on the back side that was fitted into the legacy rail to lessen the
racking that happens when changing directions.
First photo, z axis. 3:1 (I don't think it's 6:1) reduction. large pulley is
sized to fit on the existing legacy Z shaft. Connection of stepper motor uses
some t slot nuts that fit the legacy extrusion.
Second photo, Y axis. Used legacy parts to attach the wood to the rails. motor
is direct connected to Y axis with zero backlash nuts, i think they are called
spider connections, not sure, but those connections are the right size for the
shaft of the stepper and the shaft of the y axis.
Third photo, X axis front. this is more complicated. I turned the x leadscrew
around and direct connected like with the Y axis.
Fourth photo, x axis rear. Shows connection to legacy rail with t slot nuts.
Fifth photo, Rotary axis front. Ok, this takes a bit of explanation. There is a
1/4" round shaft with a flat ground in it that goes through the legacy rotary
axis. Note the tapped allen bolt, it secures the rotary axis to that 1/4 shaft
and pulley. A bronze bushing holds the 1/4 shaft on the outside aluminum plate.
Two large threaded rods bolt to the legacy frame using existing holes--nylock
nuts keep the aluminum plates connected and parallel.
Sixth photo, rotary axis rear. Clear view of ball bearing tensioners. These are
not adjustable, as I wasn't smart or patient enough to figure out how to make
them have variable tension. They keep the belt tight on the pulleys.
Seventh photo, rotary axis top.
Eighth photo, rotary axis front. Shows timing belt and pulley configuration.
It's a 3:1 and 3:1 reduction as I recall.
Last photo, rotary axis top. Shows detail of connection to rotary axis.

If any of you guys were wanting the router bit templates I have two sets left.
They are 81/2”x11”x3/32” clear acrylic. The match the originals with the bit

cost to have the duplicated.
Contact me at densoning...@charter.net if wot want a set.

that kit on the Legacy. I bought a kit from the following company very close to
this one:
https://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/g540-stepper-motor-kits/g540-4-axis-kit-115v230vac/
It's listed now at $617, and I probably paid 500 something for it those years
ago. this company also offers another kit with 570 oz steppers
https://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/g540-stepper-motor-kits/4-axis-stepper-motor-cnc-router/
What would I do different? 1. I'd start with a geared stepper rather than
making a gear reduction with pulleys and timing belts. 2. I really like having
some of the axes directly connected to the stepper motor because it's so simple
and less can go wrong. 3. I'd add limit switches to avoid crashes on both
extents of x y and z axes. Right now I have only an x min endstop to avoid
crashing into the 3 jaw chuck.4. I'd prefer the shortest machine possible for
working my dowels, which has always been 4 feet. I'm not crazy enough to cut
irreplacable rails, so I'd try and lock the height and level of the legacy to
make it more ridgid because I always tend to be a little tapered on one end of
a dowel. 5. I still like using mach3, although its strengths lie in straight
lines and not in circles and ellipses. I've not used it at all for relief
carving; everything is turning spindles and threading, which it does well. If I
were to start over, I'd probably look at how to interface with Vectric and more
modern controllers so I don't have to rely on parallel port connections on
ancient computers. I keep 2 spare computers laying around just in case, which
is silly.

I promise that I will take some pics this week.

Tim, I printed off your actual sized picture of the mounting plate and compared
it to my 1200. The 1200 came pre-drilled from Legacy to receive the mounting
plate for a 4Z131B. What I discovered from your drawing is that the shaft
diameter is located correctly and oversized adequately to slip over the 5/8"
leadscrew, but only the top hole that attaches the plate to the frame leg
matches up properly. Since I don't have this motor, I suggest that it would be
easy to fashion a mounting plate from 1/8" steel using your pattern, drill the
second plate mounting hole to match the 1200's other predrilled hole, get the
motor and drill the plate to match the motor mounting holes. This will only
work for those with a 1200 (or 2000) with a 4Z131B motor, of course.

Hi Arkady,

Print out the attached pdf file using the “Print Actual Size” setting and see
if it will work for you

I made this file by using cad data from Grainger and modified my 4Z128 motor
mount. I have not verified any of the dimensions and it should only work on the
Model 900 that has bronze bushing on the leadscrew. If you have roller
bearings on the leadscrew, it might not work. I don’t have those dimensions.

Please let me know if this works for you.

Most industrial style limit switches offer both nc/no (normally closed/normally

Ebay is a good source, other wise they are very expensive via standard
industrial supply houses.

Well just bought a Dayton 4Z131B new on eBay for under $200 shipped.

Found a nice controller on eBay as well around $115 shipped. Now just need
limit switches and a mounting plate.

Hope I got a good price. All those I’ve asked said yes.

Hey Bill,

Steppers are variable speed and can have pretty high torque at low speeds.
Just needs to be sized correctly for the LOM (I'm thinking a nema 23 or 34).
Here's an example youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FsA1yoZ840 About
1 min or so into the video, the fellow has the motor going really slowly.

plate for a 4Z131B. What I discovered from your drawing is that the shaft

leadscrew, but only the top hole that attaches the plate to the frame leg
matches up properly. Since I don't have this motor, I suggest that it would be
easy to fashion a mounting plate from 1/8" steel using your pattern, drill the
second plate mounting hole to match the 1200's other predrilled hole, get the
motor and drill the plate to match the motor mounting holes. This will only

Most industrial style limit switches offer both nc/no (normally closed/normally
open). Legacy used normally closed. They broke the power to the motor. The over
ride switch closed the connection to the motor so you could switch the
direction of the motor and back off the limit switch.

RE: Want to put a motor my 1200

2020-06-19 Thread bulkeley
My answer is yes, set up the legacy way the finish is not that good try it
yourself by manually turning the single handle.

Then set up and turn the 2 handles together the leadscrew slow and the spindle
fast and you will see a much better finish almost doesn’t need sanding. Now if
turning with a corbox bit which I do from time to time you need lots of rpm on
the spindle with a very fine feed of the leadscrew to get a nice finish.

Now if you make fine pitch gears like I did and set the mill the legacy way
with a 1/16 pitch instead of 1/2 then you get the same result with just one
motor but to get that is lots of work a second motor is easier but all this is
just my opinion.

Question about spindel motor. Is it any advantage in results using spindel
motor compared drive motor with 0.25 gear set as Legacy recommend?

RE: Want to put a motor my 1200

2020-06-19 Thread bulkeley
1/20 hp and Torque: 27.0 in.-lb that is what legacys is so that or higher.
this motor is 109 rpm max but for a spindle motor the same except I would like
150rpm but that’s just me I like a bit faster spindle speed when turning
especially if using a corbox bit.

could you show more of the stepper motor on the Z access? I think that

Re: Want to put a motor my 1200

2020-06-19 Thread Chainlink
Wes,

I did a conversion to CNC on a legacy 1200 with steppers. I have nema23
387oz. steppers and a 6:1 gear reduction on the Z and rotary axis, and a
straight coupling on the X and Y. The setup is adequate on X,Y and Z, but
the rotary axis needs a lot more torque. I haven't looked into what the
most powerful nema23 motor that can be run on a Gecko 540 is, but that's
what I would try next.

My video from years ago doesn't yet have the gear reductions, but it shows
some of the setup. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlQ46e3gwiA. Next time I
fire it up, I'll try to shoot a new video for the groups' benefit.

Re: Want to put a motor my 1200

2020-06-18 Thread wkhill99 .
Hey Bill,

Steppers are variable speed and can have pretty high torque at low speeds.
Just needs to be sized correctly for the LOM (I'm thinking a nema 23 or
34). Here's an example youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FsA1yoZ840 About 1 min or so into the
video, the fellow has the motor going really slowly.

Also found one of the Legacy/Grainger motors used says good condition wants
$160 plus $25 shipping. Is that a good price? Anyone?

Has anyone considered using stepper motors / drivers with their

RE: Want to put a motor my 1200

2020-06-18 Thread artmarbles

-Tim

Anybody can help? Maybe some pics?

 Hello Arkady
On my 1000ex the end cap, on the Legacy has the bolt pattern cut into it. The
motor was to be a straight line coupling to the acme screw and bolt into/on the
end plate of the machine. If you like I can take a photo latter? But it was a
simple hole pattern one large hole for the acme screw To run through, and 4
smaller ones for the bolts to mount the motor.

2020-06-17 Thread JOHNNY L TYLER
Hi Bill, this looks to be the one you refer to. If so, do I understand
correctly that a drive motor is needed on each end of the worm drive shaft?
Thanks to you and all for the collective expertise of folks on this subject!

Grainge stopped making the speed control in 2005. The DC motor we used ended in
2008.

I recommended a Dzc motor with a 5/8 shaft. But you may have forgotten that.
The speed control you will need to fit the motor.

Motors can be sourced you just have to get creative roller door motors,
mobility scooter motors are good you get faward reverse and speed control on
them . or ebay for a 90volt dc geared motor something around 100rpm, ebay has
speed controllers too
https://www.ebay.com/itm/DAYTON-DC-Speed-Control-90VDC-2A-NEMA-1-5X412/253826435142?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20200520130048%26meid%3D71043dfb880748938b865f4f9e62d739%26pid%3D15%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dpf%26sd%3D253820519303%26itm%3D253826435142%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplAMLv5PairwiseWebWithBBEV2bDemotion%26brand%3DDayton

Believe me I’m no expert the motors you saw working in the video of mine were
small ac motors the speed was controlled with sprockets like a bike not a speed
controller they weren’t ideal. Motors for the legacy are a difficult road for
the legacy but not impossible. You can even go into a armature winder shop they
can get exactly what you need but at a price here down under $1000 would set me
up but that’s too much for me to pay.

I feel a motor drive is a must for any Legacy owner.
I originally did not by a motor drive for my machine, I felt it was to
expensive and I did not need it. I was WONG on both accounts. Granted I DID
not by form Legacy, I did make my own, the Motor makes the Legacy into a much
better machine.

Here are some pix. of my motor.

As you can see I did not mount my motor as Legacy did, (on the end of the acme
screw.) The main reason was this motor was almost free, and its size is to big
to fit on my Legacy, So I modified it . Its a 90 volt DC gear motor. 82-1 gear
ratio. max. speed is something like 40 rpm. (which is was faster than I will
ever use on my machine.) The gear's and chain are from an Audi timing chain (I
picked up second hand form my auto garage shop.) I made one limit switch. (not
shown) All the wire is Home Depot speaker wire.

As you can see, there are more than one way to do almost anything. and you
don't have to spend a lot of money to get the job done.

Thanks for the feedback Curt. I'm one of those folks with limited interest AND
ability in all things mechanical like you, so off-the-shelf is my world, I
guess. You have a gift that I'll never have! I'll call Legacy and maybe Stacy
or someone can provide the original drive motor supplier back in the day when
Legacy was producing the 1200/2000. Again, thanks for the great group feedback!
