Re: [LegacyUG] Most have switched?
I've used a number of genealogy programs over the past 10-15 years as most of us have done and I have found that Legacy is about the most versatile one I've ever used. It has a learning curve to be sure, but I suspect that you will be a spokesperson for it once you've used it for a while. I've been using it for a little over a year and am still learning all the benefits it has. Stay with it, you wont regret having learned to use it. My only desire would be that an Apple version would be developed so I could boot the Virtual Machine I have to run. I do understand that that is probably not going to happen due to the Access portion of the package - but I'm staying with Legacy anyway. :-) Bob Heather Stovold hstov...@gmail.com wrote: Well I, for one, had switched... I chose it about 12 years ago and found it quite intuitive, relative to other (non-genealogy) programs I had used. (I realize Legacy was simpler then.) I have to skip over all the vague references on this list to FTM, etc., which are meaningless to me. I hope you are saying that _any_ first-time genealogy program can be overwhelming, depending on one's general computer experience, rather than saying that Legacy, in particular, is overwhelming. [LegacyUG] Global Spell Checker
When I first converted to Legacy via a GEDCOM file a year or so ago, I noted lots of words in the notes had been imported with a space in the word. i.e., ‘date’ might be ‘da te’, ‘birth’ might be ‘bir th’, etc. So, I have tried making manual corrections while using the ‘Global Spell Check’ feature. Unfortunately, when I encounter ‘da te’, there is no option available to make that into ‘date’, so after I complete the spell checking for a particular general note, I then select the ‘Skip to Next’ feature, which takes me to the next individual who has a note error. To check on my progress, I exit the spell checker and go to the note for the specific individual who I had just corrected. To my consternation, the note has not been corrected as I had hoped – the ‘da te’ type spelling error remain. This is not a fault with the spell checker, since it is looking for misspelled words, but this ‘da te’ issue isn’t being corrected either. I believe I have thousands of words like this in the notes for a lot of my entries and it appears to be a rather large undertaking to correct. Is there anyway to manually correct this during use of the spell checker as I am doing by making the manual correction and then select some feature that will permit this manual correction to take effect in my notes? [LegacyUG] Capitalized Surnames
I have been cleaning up some hundreds of errors in the file via the 'Potential Problems' list but there is one item I do not seem to be able to correct. Somehow I have about 20 individual records where the surnames are permanently capitalized either by incorporating from a GEDCOM or from records I entered - can't tell at this point. I have tried to correct the capitalized surname by retyping it in the individual edit field, but the capitalized name continues to reappear when I 'save'. I have removed the offending capitalized name from tblNR and tblNX - but even though the capitalized name has been removed from these tables, it continues to plague me when I try to change it to the 'Smith' version on the individual edit. Even with deleting 'SMITH' from the tables and selecting the 'smith' name from the drop down arrow in the individual surname edit, it defaults to the 'SMITH' capitalized version on 'save' - even though 'SMITH' does not appear in the list. When 'SMITH' does appear in the list, I have tried to combine it with 'smith', and even though this occurs and only 'smith' remains, when I try to select and 'save' 'smith' from the individual edit feature, the surname reverts to 'SMITH'. It is not of monumental significance, but having Smith default to SMITH is an aggravation and I would like some advice on how to remove and correct this. Re: [LegacyUG] Master source question
Jenny - If I created a new source with all the data I wanted that 'mirrors' an older one, and then combined the older one with the new one, would all the sources be changed to the new source? It seems to me that I have tried this and the data is now reflected with the new source. Could you elaborate on the consequences of this? Bob Jenny M Benson ge...@cedarbank.me.uk wrote: I was wondering if I could change the specific Master Sources I created (e.g., Giovanni Barberi's Civil Birth Record, 22 Jan 1833, Cerreto Sannita, Italy) and transform them into a general Master Source (e.g., Civil Birth Records 1809-1860, Cerreto Sannita, Italy). If I can do that, it will make my effort much easier. It's easy enough to amend or edit a Master Source and then EITHER save it to overwrite the previous version OR save it as a new version with a different name. If you take the former option, you will then need to go to each person using that Master Source and change the Source Details as appropriate. If you take the latter option, no one will be using the newly created Source and you can then go through your file attaching that new Master Source as required, with appropriate Source Details. In that case, you will probably also be deleting the old Source from some people. Having said that, I would think about how many people and Sources you have entered and decide whether it is worth starting again from scratch. You do not need to re-enter all the individuals' data, just delete the Master Sources, create new ones and attach as required. Also, since I have created specific Details associated with each specific Master Source, could I amend those Details to include more detail and link them to the appropriate newly created Master Sources? If you edit a Master Source and re-save it with the same name, you can then go to anyone using that Source and edit the Source Details. But if you delete a Master Source you will also delete any Source Details attached to it and if you create a new Master Source (either from scratch or by amending an existing one) there will be no Source Details to edit. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp -- /Users/robertrunion/Desktop/eMail Icons/signature.pdf Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
Re: [LegacyUG] Changing RINs and MRINs in 7.0 deluxe
From personal experience, be sure that that is what you do want to do - i.e.., change the RIN/MRIN numbering, expecially if you have personal File ID numbers associated with to your research papers based on these numbers. I have been working for the past month or so trying to get my records straightened out because I did not observe the 'renumber RIN MRIN' check box and to my great chagrin renumbering took place unbeknownst to me. The result - all my hundreds of hard copy files backing up my digital files, based on a MRIN numbering system, changed and I didn 't catch it for about a month. In retrospect, I should have used only Master Sources instead of Detailed File ID's, but that ship has sailed. So, I have been laboriously working my way through 20,000 names to get back to some semblance of order. Right now I'm wading my way through a 60 page File ID report to identify those numbers that I need to correct. So far, I am about 80-% recoved, but learned a valuable lesson. I had 3 backups of my .fdb files, unfortunately, these backups contained the wrong information before I discovered it. The end result - watch the little boxes when you change anything - they can have far reaching effects - you know 'the law of unintended consequences' is always alive and waiting. :-) Bob Kathy Shiell-Stokes shearerfamilyt...@3web.com wrote: Ellen: The best and easiest way is to export your entire database to a gedcom and then import it into a new file making sure that, when importing, you have ticked the box entitledrenumber RINs. I believe several LUGGers have some creative methods for numbering the RINs in their file. I would caution you though that should you be composing webpages, the RINs become the individual pages so such a renumbering would be a really wholesale change and likely not one that people would take just for an afternoons entertainment. That said, individual RINs CAN be renumbered to suit your fancy, if at a later date you need to make changes... [LegacyUG] Table Usage Access

A couple of suggestions I received indicated that I was on the right tract that might permit me to change them in tblSX using Access - unfortunately, I have discovered that even if I change the 'Filing REF' data, the change doesn't 'take' in my 'bob.fdb' file when I re-opened it in Legacy. Any suggestions on a method to do mass changes to Detail File ID's when in Access? Note: These errors were only detected after several weeks of data entry and my backups are not the original backup with the former Detail File ID numbers. [LegacyUG] Access Table
I have encountered a colossal problem that was brought about by an action I must have inadvertently taken (shame on me) to allow a re-numbering of one or more fields - specifically the MRIN numbers. Evidently I wasn't paying attention on a GEDCOM upload feature and didn't discover this until yesterday - after several of these uploads occurred to my dismay. My problem - I use the 'MRIN+number' feature to file paper documents and also enter this number in the detail 'FileID' box in Legacy. I'm in the process of renumbering these hundreds of documents due to the above situation - a most laborious project!!! My Hope - Is there any table, when viewing a 'Bob1.fdb' (I have a multitude of backups thank goodness), in Access that would permit me to enter/alter the File ID? I have looked at my 'tblSX' and observe that there are a number of items that look like my MRIN+number data under the column entitled 'Filing Ref' . This appears to be a possible opportunity to correct my errors. Is it possible that changing/correcting/entering the current File Id number (noted as my MRIN+number) in this column might accomplish my goal? If not, please suggest a solution. Re: [LegacyUG] Access Table
Dennis - When I set up my paper source filing system to support my digital files, I numbered master sources with 9000 series. i.e., 9212 might be 'Marriage License in Dead Center, Kansas'. Then I might assign 9030 as the Master source for Joe and Susie who married in said location, but filed their marriage license as 3211-1, 321 being their MRIN. This works for me - whether acceptable to others , I don't know. Now, the problem is that I did not recognize by moving my file to another PC via GEDCOM, I failed to recognize that MRIN 3211 might now become MRIN 4401 because of the renumbering. So, my 'FileID' of 3211-1 now does not allow me to find Joe and Susie by entering MRIN 3211 in the search field because 3211 is now assigned to Sam and Martha. I am seeking reassurance that if I change the MRIN from 3211-1 to the MRIN of Joe and Susie in the re-numbered system via Access, can I enter their new MRIN of 5617-1 in lieu of 3211-1 in table tblSX field FilingRef (the15th field) as proposed by Jennie and Valerie? Can I then save the .fdb file and open it in Legacy and find that the change took place as I would like. I porpose to do as they suggested for a test case, but would appreciate feedback I realize you basically asked for the time and I described how to make a watch. It is hard to write the problem and hope that the question is lucid. :-) I suppose experimentation is what I need to do - just needed some guidance from folks more acquainted with the Access package than I. I have encountered a problem (whether of my own making or whatever) that is causing me to re-visit a ton of entries to correct. I noticed this when I printed a small sample book and after reviewing several dozen entries, I noticed the following Source Citation sample (it is one of many): 7. TENNESSEE-Washington-County-Land-Action, TENNESSEE-Washington-County-Land-Actions ID: 9027. 8. REVOLUTIONARY-WAR-Pension-Abstracts, REVOLUTIONARY-WAR-Pension-Abstracts ID: 9111. As you can see in the above sample, the data appears twice when viewing the Source Citations portion of the book. Re: [LegacyUG] Double Source Data Entry
Disregard - I found what my error is and correction will not be as difficult as I had thought. It seems that when sources are entered into the system, there is one title identified as the 'Source List Name' (Shown in the Master Source List) and teh other is the 'Title' - both of which appear in any endnotes. My mistake is that I duplicated the 'Source List Name' entry into the 'Title' for lack of a better explanation. It appears that one has to have the 'Source List Name' entered, but any Title is superfluous if it is identical the 'Source List Name' - which most of mine are. [LegacyUG] Notes VS Events Text
A few days ago, I posed what I thought was a problem with end notes in version 97 - it turns out there is no problem - just me Subject topic - What are the recommendations or group thoughts on where to put Obituary text? I have placed most of them in the event area and entered the obitiuary/writeup into the text/comments block. When I prepare a Book/Narrative, these appear in the end notes. Now I am wondering if placing them in the General notes would be more appropriate. When reading a book, the general notes appear right below the individual in lieu of being a concise entry showing the idata is at the end. In accounting there are' Generally Accepted Accounting Practices' - so is the 'Generally Accepted Genealogical Entry' for such items. Or - is it a personal preference? [LegacyUG] Legacy and MS Access
I keep three .fdb files (bob1.fdb, bob2.fdb and bob3.fdb) plus off site files as well as a GEDCOM just to be sure I don't lose my current and original data. Currently, I use Access only for informational purposes in a couple of tables in Access - mostly to check out Source numbers and/or Detail Number I assigned and then save tdata as an Excel file where I am able to print some reports, etc. However, if I change anything in a column while in MS Access and want it to appear in my basic Legacy file, how do I do that? For example, if I change a 'bob1.fdb' file to 'bob1.mdb' file, open it and change an item, how do I get this 'bob1.mdb' back to a useable 'bob1.fdb'? I think I tried it once and all I got were errors, so thankfully, I was able to resurrect my 'bob2.fdb' file and continue. I even responded to some that 'oh yes, all my sources are assigned to persons in my file' - well, much as I hate to admit it, I have some 80+ sources that I had scanned into my PC and had them loaded into the Master Source BUT - I had not entered the source data as an event to the people in the file. Now, in retrospect, I would call that just plain DUMB! I guess when I entered these into my PC and the master list, I figured I would revisit them at a later date - didn't happen, so I have lots of work to do. I do appreciate the suggestions and help in isolating this problem. I have corrected about a dozen of these oversights and now my GEDCOM is reflecting the additioanl sources when I load it to a new file. When he exports his ENTIRE file to a GEDCOM, he gets PART of his sources extracted. (261) When he exports PART of his file to a GEDCOM, he gets ALL of his sources extracted. (299) That's the reverse of what you'd expect ... no matter what flags are set, what boxes are checked, whether sources are used or unused, or whether individuals are marked private or not. Identify at least one source that isn't printing, and check 'Show List' for that one, then check those people for any marks that resemble private, or don't print. This could also be an unfound 'bug'.
