Carl - Could you expand a bit on your system of tagging the individuals and/or
the groups. I have a lot of unrelated folks in my system, and this might help
me better manage the files.

2009-09-21 Thread brenzelmf
If I THINK that the person may have a connection to my family, I put them in a
separate database that I call "Unconnected People". There are lots of unlinked
individuals in there. Once I make the connection, then I use split screen to
move them from that database to my main one.

I like the two suggestions I received. Thank you. I will start using the
suggested approach instead of my current approach. I agree, it's misleading
to have unconnected people linked as siblings.

I keep possible relatives unlinked as well. I can always tgo in and expand
on THEIR tree and then I will link them whenever I find the connection.

2009-09-21 Thread Laura Johnson
I do not link unrelated people in my file to one person. That would be
very misleading and confusing to anyone else who looked at your file.

I am entering the records for a town in Sicily and have over 48,000 in
my file. I check to see first if there is a relationship to someone who
already exists in my file. If so, then I enter and link them properly.
If not, I add a new unlinked individual and add that person's parents
names and/or spouse to the file. I have many of these stand alone trees
within my large file that span more than 7 generations without a problem.

I wouldn't claim to have a "better" system, but I can only point out
that the advised method of working is backwards from the known to the
unknown, so you should only link people where you have good reason to do
so - eg, you add a father to someone when you are fairly certain you
have identified someone as their father. If you cannot link someone,
then add them as an unlinked individual, or add a series of linked
individuals as separate trees within the one family file.

Easy enough then to make links between people when you discover the
connection between 2 people in different trees. I don't really see any
advantage in having dozens of people linked as siblings when their may
not be any connection between them.

I don't know, I should say, if there is a limit on the number of trees
your can have within one family file.

Bob,

The 60 maximum is programmed into Legacy.

You can have 60 children per couple. A man could father more than 60
children, but I presume that he would have several wives or concubines or
whatever. But, I don't think it is reasonable to assume that one woman would
give birth to more than 60 children -- ouch!
