[LegacyUG] need a report that shows line from a non-direct ancestor to me
I did a search but couldn't find this. I'd like to do a report (without notes, etc) that just shows my 5th great-grandfather to me. This isn't a direct line and if I make a chart it is 117 pages. I would just like to put in his name and put in mine and have it come up. 5th ggf - 5th ggm | 4th ggf - 5th ggm down to me Not sure if this is possible but any help is greatly appreciated! thanks Kathy Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Try using the Charting program in Legacy and just do the fathers only line with you as the starting person. You can select as many generations as you want. 5 generations should fit on 1 page easily. Re: [LegacyUG] need a report that shows line from a non-direct ancestor to me
Your 5th GGrandfather is one of your direct ancestors so he should be on your direct line. Go to Tools Relationship to open the relationship calculator Choose yourself on the left and him on the right It should show him as your 5th GGrandfather if you have already set relationships with yourself as the starting person. If not click calculate relationships to calculate Use the Print button to get the line between you and your 5th GGrandfather. It is a graphical report so you have options to include boxes around names but it will give you all the couples (husband and wife) in the links between yourself and that relative. If you don't like the chart at first try different options aboput what to include and whether to use boxes or not. Re: [LegacyUG] TMG users who switched to Legacy
Dale and Wendy and others, I chose not to import a Gedcom of my TMG data base into Legacy for a couple of reasons. Firstly, when I began using TMG, I did not know what I was doing and consequently a lot of what I entered was pretty messy - so by reentering each individual I could clean up those errors. Secondly, it seemed to me that Legacy had a pretty steep learning curve and by going through the reentering process I would learn how to use Legacy. And finally, as Wendy said, it rekindled my interest in some ancestors I hadn't looked at for a long time (I have over 5000 in my data base) and I was able to add some interesting information. And, as a side note, chopping those 5000 individuals into more manageable chunks will, I believe, be an added benefit. Dan -Original Message- From: Wendy Howard Sent: Saturday, August 23, 2014 4:13 PM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] TMG users who switched to Legacy Hi Dale, It doesn't matter how many people reading the LUG are interested in your query, or not - the fact remains that your questions pertain to Legacy, and so are on-topic and welcome here. Replying on-list means the conversation will be archived, so others coming along later can discover the information shared here and perhaps answer their questions, too. :-) I've never used TMG. But, because I read this mailing list, I'm aware that there is a page on the Legacy web site to assist with importing data from other programs. Take a look at http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00890/ - while it doesn't specifically mention TMG (as far as I've seen with a quick look - you might like to make a closer examination of it), you may find some useful advice all the same. I got to that page by going to http://legacyfamilytree.com/ and then hovering the cursor over Help Centre in the menu at the top of the page, and then selecting How to import files from other programs in the drop-down menu that appeared. You may be able to find more specific advice about importing from TMG from the list archives - see the link at the bottom of every list post. Try search terms like 'tmg' and 'export', without the quotes, which I've used here to identify the search criteria; capital letters should not matter. It might be that you will need to export and/or import more than once to iron out any problems you encounter. That's okay, don't stress about it. Make notes about the selections you choose each time, so you can learn from the results. And if you are still having problems once you've taken in all the advice offered, do contact Legacy Support for assistance - they're really helpful people. Something else to consider - is your database small enough that re-typing all your data from scratch is feasible? It might be that taking such a close look at it all will lead you to new discoveries, and perhaps weeding out mistakes that had been made before. I'd consider doing that if it were only a few hundred or a thousand people (I'm a quick typist), but not if I were looking at tens or hundreds of thousands or more. Only you can answer that, knowing what's in your database already and your own skills. Hope this helps. :-) Wendy Dale E O'Connor said the following on 24/08/2014 06:49: I have TMG 7.04 and Windows 7. Do you have any tips on settings for GEDCOM export/import? Did you loose any data? How did you get the data that was lost from TMG to Legacy? Is there anything else I need to look for? Can you point me to a website that already has instructions on switching? Since most people on this list want be interested in this topic you can reply off list. RE: [LegacyUG] need a report that shows line from a non-direct ancestor to me
Kathy, The Relationship Calculator can create simple charts. To get what I think you’re asking about, you first would set the relationships by using you as the focus person. Go to Tools set relationships with you as the focus person. Then you use the Relationship Calculator to get the simple line chart by selecting your g grandfather as the left hand person. The relationship calculator will then calculate the relationship for you. You can fancy it up and print it to a pdf file or to a simple text file that can be copied and pasted into an email. You can use this same method to even show how you’re related to some distant relative or even how you might be related by marriages to a non relative. If this is something that will suit your needs and you need more step by step instructions, one of us can offer a ‘how to’ as to the steps you would need to use to create this type of chart. Below is an example of a simple text file of the relationship between my husband and his gg grandfather: Elijah Nicholas Uncle Nick Wilson is the 2nd Great-Grandfather of Michael Nelson Mike Leek Common Ancestor * Elijah Nicholas Uncle Nick Wilson (8 Apr 1842 - 26 Dec 1915) * Matilda Rebecca Patten (27 Feb 1848 - 11 Nov 1899) Married 1865 | | Stephen Steve Nelson Leek (23 Apr 1858 - 23 Mar 1943) * Sarah Weltha Etta Wilson (20 Oct 1875 - 19 May 1931) Married 25 Jan 1897 | | * Lester Nelson Leek (18 Apr 1898 - 1 May 1933) Helen Mae Simpson (1 Jul 1901 - 16 May 1958) Married 23 Sep 1919 | | * Lester Jackson Jack Leek (12 Aug 1920 - 18 Nov 1993) Ferne Arlene Hecker (4 Sep 1921 - 19 Jul 2002) Married 7 Oct 1939 | | * Michael Nelson Mike Leek (21 Nov 1940 - 13 May 2012) Example of how you can show a cousin relationship using the Relationship Calculator: Bobby Gean Poindexter is the 1st Cousin of Jeanie Fowler Common Ancestor * Alfred Warren Alf Fowler (1 Mar 1872 - 8 Sep 1950) * Maggie Spince Williamson (18 Dec 1877 - 26 Jul 1935) Married 31 Mar 1897 | | | | | * Ralph Jefferson Jack FowlerBoice Franklin Poindexter (17 Dec 1907 - 10 Oct 2003) (11 Nov 1895 - 3 Jan 1975) Lorea Jackie Putman * Malevia Shug Fowler (21 Sep 1915 - 26 Dec 2000) (9 May 1901 - 1 Feb 1988) Married 28 Oct 1933 Married 26 Sep 1920 | | | | ** Bobby Gean Poindexter (Jeanie Fowler ) (23 Sep 1923 - 26 Nov 2009) From: Kathleen Townsley [mailto:ktowns...@gmail.com] Sent: Sunday, August 24, 2014 9:48 AM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] need a report that shows line from a non-direct ancestor to me I did a search but couldn't find this. Hi Boyd, I haven't seen it and can't reproduce it but I'm not sure I fully understand what you are doing. You are talking about Source Details? Are you working on the Source Clipboard at the time? Are you using a Basic Source or a SourceWriter source when it happens? More importantly, how are you selecting the text to delete? I select with the mouse and the cursor stays where it was when I delete the selection. There is a bug with a missing cursor on the Source Clipboard but it's intermittent so more information would be great. [LegacyUG] Using the Legacy Help Index
Thought this info might be helpful for someone since there has been some discussion on this issue. The *Legacy Help System *uses the standard Microsoft help menu so it should be familiar to most users. There are several ways to access it in Legacy. Pre version 8.0 1/ pressing the F1 function key 2/ clicking Help on the Menu Bar 3/ Alt+H shortcut key 4/ clicking on the various Help buttons found on many screens In version 8.0 1/ F1 function key 2/ Help Tab on the Ribbon bar 3/ Alt+P shortcut key 4/ clicking on the various Help buttons found on many screens 5/ clicking on the help icons (small Blue circle with the ? mark inside). Legacy’s Help file is extensive containing nearly 700 topics and is added to routinely. That means there is extensive help available on nearly every feature and element. There are three tabs on the Help Index panel: Index, Search, and Favorites. Below each tab is a search box where you type the term or phrase you want to find then press ENTER. Index – Returns a list of *keywords *in alphabetic order associated with related topics. Search – Returns a list of *topic headings* related to the search term or phrase. Favorites – Where you can save *bookmarks *to frequently viewed topics. *Favorites Tab* When you have a topic displayed in the text window that you would like to save click the Favorites tab. Verify the topic title is entered in the Current topic: box at the bottom of the help window and click the Add button. then you can easily return to a topic. *Removing a Favorite Topic * Click the topic name in the Topics: list, then click the Remove button. * Displaying a favorite topic* Double-click it or click the topic, then click the Display button. *Troubleshooting Help Searches* Many users erroneously believe the Index search box allows them to quickly search for every occurrence of a specific word or phrase in the Help File like they do in MS Word. Unfortunately, the Microsoft help file does not provide this capability. *The Index Tab* This search is done for keywords assigned to a topic by the help author. These usually relate specifically to the written material and therefore may not be the same ones a user is thinking about. For example: the keyword term Combine returns a different list than Merge. Also plurals can return different findings, for example: Date versus Dates. *The Search Tab* This search is closest to searching for every occurrence of a term, however, it does not display the actual words found but a listing of all topic headings where the word is found. With so many topics this list is normally fairly lengthy but It can be useful to see a list of possible topics that may be related. *Navigation Toolbar* This toolbar, located at the top of the Help Panel has four icons which are: *Hide / Show *– toggles the Search Panel off and on *Back *– moves the topic display to previous topics in this search session *Forward *– moves the topic display to the next topics in this search session. Only active after having used the Back function. *Print *– Displays a Print window where you can select the printer and settings to print a topic or all topics. *Navigation within Topics* *Hyperlinks *- Clickable text that opens another topic or a Web page. *Related Topics* - Listed at the bottom of many topics, lists other topics relevant to the current topic. It should be noted that Microsoft controls the function of the Help Index. Legacy only controls the keywords and topic information.
