Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 right click delete wife's father or mother bug

2017-05-15 Thread Mark
Laurie,

I can confirm something similar even in Beta 174 and will also submit a report.
When I right-clicked delete wife’s mother, it did so correctly though.

Kind Regards,

Mark

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 right click delete wife's father or mother bug

Version 9 Bug:

I'm using version 9.0.0.169 and tried to right click delete a wife's father.
Result was the husband was deleted instead. I've reproduced the problem with
the sample database and found if you right click to delete the wife's mother it
would delete the wife instead.

I've submitted a bug report.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources - MLA format available?

2017-05-15 Thread Cathy Pinner
The SourceWriter is based on Elizabeth Shown Mills sourcing models and
she follows the Chicago Manual of Style with some tweaking for US
National Archives citation style and by providing models for more
sources used by genealogists.

So to follow other sourcing styles, using the Basic style would be
simplest if you want to be strict down to the last comma.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tip of the day

2017-05-15 Thread JV Leavitt
Thank you very much Michele. I remember using this years ago, but had
since forgotten about it, and your tip prompted me to do as you
suggested on my big Leavitt db file (186k records), using Find
Duplicates - Special Duplicates Searches tab, and was surprised to see
80 hits! I didn't want to go ahead with the merging without first
looking at each pair to see what I would be getting myself into, so I
asked myself how I was going to get to each pair in an efficient manner.

I decided to use the Merge window in a different way to begin, by
stopping at the first match, and use an option to tag each pair with Tag
1. I would then skip to the next hit, and do the same, continuing in
that way until all 80 pairs had been tagged.

At that point, I had only to open the Name List, and use the Search
button at the bottom to show all Tag 1s. When I finished with one pair,
I could use the Search Results List to get to the next un-merged pair.
This process allowed me to finish the job in a very short time, even
with going back and forth with FS FT to verify details and do cleanup
work there, etc.

Have a great day!

TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - "Find duplicates using only

I ran this search for the first time today. I am not sure why I never
tried it before. To get to it go to Tools > Merge Duplicates > Find
Duplicates and then select the "Special Duplicates Searches" tab. The
second option is the "Find duplicates using only FamilySearch ID number."

I ran the search and found I have 31 pairs of people sharing the same
FSID. I can see how this could have happened when you consider the
ability to auto match and FSIDs being merged. I printed a list of the
31 pairs and went through them. I left the FSID on the correct person
and deleted the FSID on the wrong person.

Some of the dups I could understand how a mistake could have been made
but some of them were really off. I need to go back and look at the
change logs to see who did the merge and then undo them.

Hi Howland. If you have a somewhat unusual surname, it is sometimes better if
you only search the surname. Then you can scroll the hits, and possibly see
what might be a match for your subject. Just a thought.

Re: [LegacyUG] Find A Grave Link

2017-05-15 Thread CE WOOD
The FAG search function leaves much to be desired. It needs an alternative
index of surnames in which a search for a last name variant links to the same
person. Who ever contributes the memorial can choose only one name variant -
with or without the "de", "van", "von", etc., to say nothing of the many
different ways a name was spelled over time and even in the same document!

The problem is with FAG, not Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Date display in chart

2017-05-15 Thread Michael Feldman

Hi all,

In readying my extended-family tree for copying and distribution at an upcoming
major reunion, I've decided it would be best to show birth years but refrain
from showing full dates. Is there a way in Legacy to enter a full date into the
database, but specify that only the year will be displayed in a chart? I haven't
found anything like this in Legacy 8.

I'm thinking of privacy concerns here. Some of my relatives would be
uncomfortable seeing their birth dates appear in a family tree chart, because
one's birth date is becoming an increasingly important -- thus sensitive -- bit
of identifying information. Health care providers, for example, ask patients to
ID themselves with name and birth date (instead of social security number as in
bygone days).

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Mike

Re: [LegacyUG] Find A Grave Link

2017-05-15 Thread Rick Koelz
Howland,
The Find A Grave search algorithm only matches on EXACT equals. When I get
No Records Found I click on the Refine Last Search option in the left
column and modify the fields used in the initial attempt. I've found that
Middle Names cause many of my misses. Also adding Location Details helps.

If you haven't done so watch Geoff's "Discover the New Legacy 9" webinar.
He shows several good hints for working with Find A Grave (
https://familytreewebinars.com/download.php?webinar_id=634).

Happy Searching,
Rick

Howland,
Right now the match has to be exact. There is a suggestion in the queue for
the programmers to consider to add a "fuzzy" search which will pick up close
matches. It is common to have more information than Find A Grave does or
slightly different information.

The original message to the list is in the attachment.

This action is required because of the DMARC Reject/Quarantine Policy
imposed by some email providers. Users who want to send messages without
conversion to attachments should use a different email address for their
subscription.

Known providers for free email accounts whose emails do not require this
conversion include gmail.com and hotmail.com. Many other email providers
will also work but you will have to give them a try.

Not exactly correct, Martha!

Look at the subject line - the OP was referring to My Heritage, not
FamilySearch.

Can someone explain how Legacy Family Tree links to Find A Grave top
search for an individual's grave? I searched for someone and had no hits. But
the search for his spouse was successful and I could link from her page to her
spouse's page to find information and a Find A Grave memorial number.
I am using Legacy 9.0.0.169 and Windows 10.

Brilliant tip - thanks, Michelle!

I hardly ever import anyone, preferring to have more control by entering
everything by hand, so rarely have a need to even look at merging. I
found a couple of people who weren't duplicates and 3 who were! Then
did the "User ID" version and found I had quite a few people in that
list - just due to careless typing in data entry, I think.

[LegacyUG] Tip of the Day

2017-05-15 Thread Michele/Support
TIP OF THE DAY (Legacy Staff) - Clearing the Quick Bookmarks

(all versions)

Quick Bookmarks are the three fields you see at the bottom of the Family
View. These are a shortcut to get to up to three specific people in your
file. I have one set to myself and then the other two are people I am
working on. To set a Quick Bookmark all you have to do is have the person
highlighted in the Family View and then right click in one of the fields.
Normally you don't have to clear these fields, you simply bookmark over them
(replace one name with another). However, if you want to clear the Quick
Bookmarks all you have to do is hold down the CTRL button when you right
click in the field and that will clear it.

By the way, to the left of the three Quick Bookmarks is a little book icon.
If you right click that icon your bookmark will be saved there. Left click
the icon and you will get a list of the bookmarks you have saved. You can
save up to 200 bookmarks here if the three Quick Bookmarks aren't enough :)
