[LegacyUG] Census source changes and Legacy clipboard
I have two questions and probably I should send two separate e-mails but I will number them. 1. I have two different types of census sources for several people for one year - e.g. 1901 census - one is erroneously shown as a census form a book and the other is from an on-line database. The correct sourcing is from an on-line database. Is there any way to change the source from the book to an on-line data base so I can combine the two sources and have the correct sourcing for everyone in the two master sources? And I do hope this question makes sense. 2. Where is the Legacy clipboard? I have references to missing multimedia files that are not attached anywhere. So I assume they are on the clipboard and if I can remove them from the clipboard, then I won't be constantly reminded that I have missing multi-media sources. Thanks for any insight anyone has on these two problems. [LegacyUG] Legacy sourcing screen problems
Hi, and I am hoping someone will have an answer for me as to why I am having problems with the sourcing screen. Everything was fine yesterday but today when I try to work with Legacy and click on the add source icon I end up with a totally blank screen. I have to control/alt/delete to close the program. I don't know what I did to cause the problem, but this is the second time it has happened to me. The lst time it happened I ended up having to figure out what pictures I may have added to the sourcing I had done, removed all the pictures and then it worked. But I didn't add any pictures that I know of this time to cause the problem. I ran file maintenance and that didn't help, shut down the computer and re-opened it to see if that may be the problem. No joy so far - darn! Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem? Thanks. I am not a user of the site, so am not familiar with all that is available there. I found a search form with four fields - first, last, birth year, death year, and a couple of check boxes for doing variants. I can see all those options in the URL below. You can paste this into a browser, and it seems to work. This should be all you'd need to make Legacy do what you want it to, right? http://www.findmypast.co.uk/XdbSearchCountServlet?forename=Issacsurname=MixerincludeForenameVariants=YfromYear=1320toYear=2006 Some technical speak for any interested... I used FireBug, a FireFox plugin, to see what was being POSTed to the http://www.findmypast.co.uk/XdbSearchCountServle url. HTTP requests can either be done via POST or GET, and the FindMyPast is using POST. This keeps the parameters from appearing in the URL. I copied the parameters out of the FireBug window and pasted them on the URL (making sure to include the '?' for proper syntax), which then issues the same command as a GET. This could have failed if their servers prevented the use of GETs, which is possible, but rare. Anyway, this idea should apply to most any site using POST. I'm surprised so many use GET actually, form a coding point of view, POSTs are cleaner. Legacy is more advanced in this area than other genealogical applications. For example, FTM and Roots Magic do not have addresses associated with marriages (or events for that matter). If you are creating a GEDCOM, Legacy will properly export the address, but the receiving application may ignore it or garble it. If you put the full address in the location field, you are pretty well assured that it will be preserved on transfer to others. That may or may not be a concern for you. For example, in burials you can add the address but for marriages you don’t have that option so you have to add the address in the location field which then adds numerous new locations to the location master list.If someone is married at home, for example, you would have to add the location as 123 anywhere street, name of city, name of country rather than city, country and then the exact address in a marriage address listing (as you do with burials). I am in the process of cleaning up master lists and noticed this anomaly for marriages. [LegacyUG] Sourcing in Legacy
Hello and I am wondering if anyone else has the same problem as I am encountering. When I add sources to individuals, I can sometimes edit a source and other times when I try to edit the source the program freezes. I see the outline of the source window, but it will not open and I can only close it by clicking on cancel. This seems to happen mostly with census sourcing. But it can also happen with other sources. Does anyone have any ideas why that would be happening? I did contact Legacy for help and the suggestion was to re-install the program. I don't really think that is necessary as it could be something as simple as putting in a source wrong. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
