[LegacyUG] Census source changes and Legacy clipboard

2012-01-10 Thread Kathy Jones
I have two questions and probably I should send two separate e-mails but I
will number them.

1. I have two different types of census sources for several people for
one year - e.g. 1901 census - one is erroneously shown as a census form a
book and the other is from an on-line database. The correct sourcing is
from an on-line database. Is there any way to change the source from the
book to an on-line data base so I can combine the two sources and have the
correct sourcing for everyone in the two master sources? And I do hope
this question makes sense.

2. Where is the Legacy clipboard? I have references to missing
multimedia files that are not attached anywhere. So I assume they are on
the clipboard and if I can remove them from the clipboard, then I won't be
constantly reminded that I have missing multi-media sources.

Thanks for any insight anyone has on these two problems.

There are two show 1/2 sibling settings. One is on the sibling list, that is
probably where you turned yours on, and one on the Family View.

To turn on 1/2 siblings in family view:
Right click on any child.
Select View from the drop down menu
Select show 1/2 kids from the drop down view menu

To turn on 1/2 siblings in the sibling list:
Open the sibling list
click to put a check mark in the show half brothers and sisters.

[LegacyUG] Legacy sourcing screen problems

2011-12-20 Thread Kathy Jones
Hi, and I am hoping someone will have an answer for me as to why I am having
problems with the sourcing screen.

Everything was fine yesterday but today when I try to work with Legacy and
click on the add source icon I end up with a totally blank screen. I have
to control/alt/delete to close the program. I don't know what I did to
cause the problem, but this is the second time it has happened to me. The
lst time it happened I ended up having to figure out what pictures I may
have added to the sourcing I had done, removed all the pictures and then it
worked. But I didn't add any pictures that I know of this time to cause
the problem.

I ran file maintenance and that didn't help, shut down the computer and
re-opened it to see if that may be the problem. No joy so far - darn!

Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

Thanks.

To add to the questions re images in sources, if I add a census .jpg file to
a source, I cannot then edit the source. All I get is a white screen until
I control/alt delete to close Legacy.

Until I actually delete the image, I cannot edit or use the source for
anyone who may have this event with the source copied to it. It was
suggested that my .jpg was too big, so I reduced the size with the same
result.

One of the Legacy people told me to re-install Legacy to correct this
problem. That seemed to me to be a bit of overkill as there is nothing
wrong with Legacy, just the inability to add images.Do you have any
suggestions as to why this is happening? I can add some images, but not
others. And censuses seem to be the big problem.

Thanks.

Tony,

In a nutshell, no. I regularly check information contained in census images
which I have stored in my sources, and have to either write the required
detail down, or flick from one page to the other. As you probable know,
legacy only stores the path and not the image.

There is, of course, nothing to stop you going to the stored image and
opening it in whatever program you use.

When you are editing someone and click on the little Sources button
you get a list of sources for that person. If you now click on a source
which has a jpeg image attached either to the source or to the detail,
there is a small preview of the jpeg at the bottom of the screen.

Is there any way to open the jpeg from that point in anything other than
Legacy's internal viewer? When I click on the preview, it opens the
picture gallery and then I can open it in Legacy.

However, I can't have the picture open and do anything else in Legacy.

What I want is for the jpeg to open in my default jpeg viewer, so I can
have it open while doing things inside Legacy. I'd really like to skip
the Picture gallery step, but if I have to go there it doesn't matter.

Thanks

Tony

Subject: [LegacyUG] FYI: Custom Search URL for FindMyPast

To Kathy Jones and any interested, you should be able to play around with this
URL to customize your search. I am not a user of the site, so am not familiar
with all that is available there. I found a search form with four fields -
first, last, birth year, death year, and a couple of check boxes for doing
variants. I can see all those options in the URL below. You can paste this
into a browser, and it seems to work. This should be all you'd need to make
Legacy do what you want it to, right?

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/XdbSearchCountServlet?forename=Issacsurname=MixerincludeForenameVariants=YfromYear=1320toYear=2006

Some technical speak for any interested...
I used FireBug, a FireFox plugin, to see what was being POSTed to the
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/XdbSearchCountServle url. HTTP requests can either
be done via POST or GET, and the FindMyPast is using POST.
This keeps the parameters from appearing in the URL. I copied the parameters
out of the FireBug window and pasted them on the URL (making sure to include
the '?' for proper syntax), which then issues the same command as a GET. This
could have failed if their servers prevented the use of GETs, which is
possible, but rare. Anyway, this idea should apply to most any site using
POST. I'm surprised so many use GET actually, form a coding point of view,
POSTs are cleaner.

Good Luck

Hi,

Click on the marriage event in family view, this brings up the ‘marriage
information’ screen.

Click on the icon near the top that looks like a house. Brings up the address
screen (same one used for individuals and events).

Just one caution. Legacy is more advanced in this area than other genealogical
applications. For example, FTM and Roots Magic do not have addresses associated
with marriages (or events for that matter). If you are creating a GEDCOM,
Legacy will properly export the address, but the receiving application may
ignore it or garble it. If you put the full address in the location field, you
are pretty well assured that it will be preserved on transfer to others.

That may or may not be a concern for you.

Is there an option to add an “exact address” for a marriage in Legacy. For
example, in burials you can add the address but for marriages you don’t have
that option so you have to add the address in the location field which then
adds numerous new locations to the location master list.If someone is
married at home, for example, you would have to add the location as 123
anywhere street, name of city, name of country rather than city, country and
then the exact address in a marriage address listing (as you do with burials).

I am in the process of cleaning up master lists and noticed this anomaly for
marriages. If there are suggestions as to how to (a) have the exact address
for the marriage and (b) not have it entered as a location in the master list,
I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

to add Find My Past to the list of sites that can be searched from Legacy?

Thanks very much.

one marriage with parents name in brackets. Not showing now.

RE: [LegacyUG] PLEASE READ - Guideline Reminders

2011-01-19 Thread Kathy Jones
And could I also add - please, please - to change the subject line if you are
not talking about something in the subject line. It makes it so much easier
on every one if the subject line is on topic with the body of the e-mail.

Thanks.

Subject: [LegacyUG] PLEASE READ - Guideline Reminders

Please stay on topic with Legacy and Legacy add-ons. Off topic messages make
it more difficult for the Support team and others to find important Legacy
related questions which need our assistance.

Emails should be sent in Plain Text only. No HTML or RTF. No embedded
pictures, fancy colors, etc. Some people have vision problems which affect
their ability to read certain colors and HTML adds a lot of overhead to an
email message, even if you haven't included graphics. Some of our users are on
limited bandwidth and have to pay by the amount of internet data they send and
receive or they're on dial-up and the HTML slows down their access to email.

No attachments to messages sent to the LUG list. See reasons above

*Please* clean up your posts. Remove older messages which don't apply to your
response and PLEASE delete all the tag lines that the email program adds when
you send your response. New ones will be added.

And PLEASE read the tag lines! There is some good information available at
those links (like the one for the User Group Guidelines.

Be considerate - think of the next guy!

Thanks!

Sincerely,
Sherry

[LegacyUG] Sourcing in Legacy

2010-07-23 Thread Kathy Jones
Hello and I am wondering if anyone else has the same problem as I am
encountering.

When I add sources to individuals, I can sometimes edit a source and other
times when I try to edit the source the program freezes. I see the outline
of the source window, but it will not open and I can only close it by
clicking on cancel. This seems to happen mostly with census sourcing. But
it can also happen with other sources. Does anyone have any ideas why that
would be happening?

I did contact Legacy for help and the suggestion was to re-install the
program. I don't really think that is necessary as it could be something as
simple as putting in a source wrong.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
