Re: [LegacyUG] Place of Death
Using the actual place of death is correct, ie., city in which the nursing home is located. Attach pdf documentation when possible. This is the one area that family members want to challenge because they forgot that grand paw died in the hospital in the neighboring city. The ancestor's residence has already been documented by a census or city directory. In the event of the absence of permanent residence documentation, simply create an event titled residence which will allow you to attach documentation such as pics of the house. Re: [LegacyUG] Number of People you can have in your file?
In a previous family file, I had over 120,000 names. I had no problem on the legacy side. For 300,000 names, you will need a computer with a very fast processor. My computer processor had 8 gb of ram and could not handle this huge file. Be prepared to do a lot of waiting with some lock up on a slower computer. Would recommend a Legacy dedicated gaming computer with the fastest processor possible. Re: [LegacyUG] I AM IN A BIG MESS - again - no still
Legacy allows you to print to an excell file. In preparing to print each file, do not select first and last name together rather select surname, then first name, birth date and death date. Now you are ready to print the entire data base to an excel file. After it has printed, open the excel file and input the name of the database in the first blank column. Repeat these steps for the second database. In the first empty column input the name of the second database. Copy the entire page for the second database and paste the results at the end of the first excel spreadsheet. Do this for each remaining database. Finally sort the file by the using the surname and then last name. Now you will be able to go down the alphabetical list which will tell you the database for each person. For excel help, see youtube. Hi Dave, Adding fathers each with their own children is not a problem in Legacy. If it is the mother who has multiple marriages (same procedure if it I'd the father) go to the mother and add a spouse, then add the children they have in common. Go back to the mother, add the second spouse, then add their children. Hope this helps. Re: [LegacyUG] Media Files
I have been working with Legacy since version 3.0. I have had computers not wanting to start, files being corrupted or accidentally deleting a picture. If you value your pics, and the hours you spent, backing up to the cloud or a removable hard drive is a must. You realize that backing up to the computer you are working on when the dog knocked the laptop onto the floor and now it won't come on. In my opinion the cloud is the best because I have a drawer of nice external hard drives that say there is a problem and the drive needs to be reformatted. I have 32,000 pictures and I back up to both an SD card and to Dropbox and the Legacy Cloud. Hope this helps. >From Morris M. Re: Re[2]: [LegacyUG] Organization of Photos, Scanned Documents and etc.
Just dumped using Photoshop Elements 11. While Elements has many nice bells and whistles, I decided to use Picasa and I love it. When you tag people in Elements, it does not display tags individually as you will find in Facebook. Rather all tags are displayed at the same time and many overlap each other. Picasa displays one tag at a time. Secondly, I have one folder that I have my photos from which I link Legacy to. If for some reason you have to restore files, it will create a new file and the pics will be linked to the new file. If you try to import your working file, you will see many duplicates. In my file, I have over 10,000 pictures. I really didn't have time for Element's foolishness. For instance if I search 'Harris' it will bring up everything keyword tagged Harris but also every folder with the name Harris in it and every location that has Harris in it. No subtlety there at all and it only recognizes a few of the many IPTC fields. And, being Windows, of course names them differently than the accepted standard. For tagging and searching, there's the free GeoSetter (location data and GPS as well as all the range of IPTC tags; keywords, captions, object name (where I put type of records) source, copyright and much more. http://www.geosetter.de/en/ Or XnView. http://www.xnview.com/ Photo Mechanic is also very good but costs about $150. http://www.camerabits.com/site/ Anything that does batch tagging and detailed search (all of the above-mentioned) is a real boon when you're dealing with thousands of files. For example, I use one keyword 'gravestone' for all headstones/markers, and then add keywords for each of the surnames on that marker. Works equally well with group photos. Re: [LegacyUG] Location for LEGACY Multimedia folders
The reason I prefer Dropbox to store pics over Google's Drive is that Dropbox stores the files on my hard drive and on the Dropbox web. Often, I am in a situation without internet access. In these times, I can still work with my pics as they are also on my hard drive. Google's Drive requires internet access (Although they do have a beta version to download to your hard drive as does Dropbox). Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Center
I use the picture center a lot so I can link multiple persons in a pic. Wouldn't it be nice if Legacy would put the DOB and DOD just as you would see in the Name List. I am looking at a pic that I would like to move to my picture folder. The source, ie., find-a-grave, gives me the DOB and DOD of John Doe. I have to close picture center and go to family, pedigree or index view to see if the dates match with my database. This problem does not happen when you are adding photos from Family View. However, if I have multiple people, Legacy does not allow me to add that second person from the Family View by clicking the picture frame. The other cumbersome thing that I hope could be revamped is to find other linked persons, you have to click the arrows on every picture to see who is linked. It would be nice if there would be a button like what appears in the Master File to click to see list. Re: [LegacyUG] Photo Naming Tip
I have over 7,000 linked photos. In the Heritage Collector webinar, the moderator asked, how fast can you find a picture. Just thought I would pass along what I do which works well. The name of the picture is: Last name, First name, 1st 2nd or 3rd, number of picture. Example: The sixth picture for John Jones IV. would be: John Jones 4.6.jpg Hope this helps those who may be interested. Re: [LegacyUG] SURVEY: What is the highest number of pictures you have in any one Picture Gallery?
Hi Bill, The number of pics handled by Legacy is limitless. Legacy does not store or copy your pics in a separate database. Rather, Legacy links to your current pictures. That is why you have to tell it where the files are located. Legacy does provide a folder for pictures if you choose to save pictures in that file. However, it still links. I have my photos stored on dropbox. I have 7,160 jpg files stored in a file I have named Legacy Family Tree Pics. I have another file on dropbox named Legacy Docs with subfolders which contain about 1,500 pdf files of documents. I do not use Tiff files. I have converted them to jpg files. Try moving your Tiff files to your desktop. Then try to see if you have the same results without the Tiff files in your picture list. Morris From: William (Bill) R. [LegacyUG] Picture Notes
When I am working in the picture center, I look to see if it is attached and look to see if I have all the captions and notes I would like to use. If I add a picture under family view and then go to the picture center, I find the notes listed under the Attached Pics tab, but not the Picture List tab. Is there a way that I can copy all of the notes from the Attached Pics to the Picture List without having to: Copy notes manually from Attached Pics to Picture List or Retype again in Picture List, click attach, and then delete the old attached pic holding the same filename. Your advice is welcome. Re: [LegacyUG] Keeping files updated and in sync
My wife and I have found that Legacy is the only software on the market that will allow two people to access the database. The exception is that both can not merge at the same time. I have the database on an external hard drive on the network. We both access that hard drive at the same time. We make all changes on Legacy and then upload to Ancestry Family Tree Online. The computer attached to the hard drive runs faster than the one linked through the network. One caution is that you need to make sure you close Legacy and give enough time for Dropbox to upload your changed Legacy file and download it to the other computer(s) before opening Legacy on them (usually just a few seconds depending on the speed of your network connection). I have been using Dropbox for this purpose for quite some time and I am very pleased with the result. [LegacyUG] Marriage List
I have 129 Records which have junk from a FTM import. Through a detailed search, I have been able to isolate these files and then designate them in Name List using tag # 9. I can edit general notes, medical notes, research notes, but I do not see a way to edit the marriage notes. When I complete each, it takes me back to family view. I then have to click on Name List and then search all tagged on 9. It would be nice to have a link on the name list page. Does anyone know of an easier way?
