Actually I have done both.  I will use the Mellette numbering for the Mellette 
family and AFN otherwise.

There is a two volume set of the Hickman - Mellette family history that was 
published in the 70’s.  My grandfather helped provide the author some 
background on our line in the family.  The author used a numbering system to 
place all of the descendants of the Hickman-Mellette family.  Many of the 
families have the set and it is available at the Family History Library.
