[LegacyUG] Legacy Charting Help window blank

2010-02-07 Thread Dawn Del Guercio
Hi all,

I'm here plugging away at my genealogy data entry. I have two
questions related to one another. I am trying to find a way to do an
ancestor tree (graphical) that shows the siblings of my ancestors on
the same tree. I couldn't find a way to do it on Legacy, and then
through to try out the charting program. I did an ancestor standard
tree on there, and though it looks nice, I still can't find a way to
list siblings on there either. My first question is, is there a way
to do a visual ancestor tree which includes siblings?

Then, in my attempt to find out if I could do this in charting, I
clicked on the help button, and then on the help system button and
it brought up a BLANK html window with no text. Where did the help
manual go within charting? I also don't know how to go about checking
for updates and updating charting when necessary.

Thanks for your help!

Dawn,

I guess Help was inadvertantly omitted, I understand it is known and will be
corrected.

Your other problem is rather more difficult. The siblings are not included,
of course, because they are not ancestors. I cannot see how this can be done
in Charting, as the obvious way is to create an fdb file with just the
people you want, but you would then have to create a descendant chart for
multiple people and Charting cannot do this.

Hi Ron,
Hmm... I'm surprised there's no one that has ever tried this.
I do of course want the focus to be on my ancestors, so I don't want

My reasoning is because I need a visual way to see the relation
between many people with same or similar names. Raymond, Raymond J.,
etc.

Any ideas at all about how to accomplish this?

I don't think it is a case of nobody having tried it, indeed I can remember
similar sorts of requests over the years. It can be done in html, but I
can't think of a way of doing it for a chart/printing. Someone else may have

I use Charting and my help file comes up fine.
To check for updates click on Tips Updates (the last item on the
Charting toolbar ribbon)
As regards the chart you want
In Legacy tag all ancestors on an unused tag (Family View. Edit Tag
records) .
Then on the second screen Check Direct line Ancestors
Also if you want them, check Include other spouses and spouses of
siblings.
Then go to File Export to Legacy File, Give it a name and then check
all records with an individual tag of your tag number.
Use this file to produce your chart.
It takes longer to write than do!

Yes I am using V7.0.4.6 and have been since it was released.
I have just made a chart using  Legacy Charting 7.0.120 with Ancestors and
 siblings.

 Judy,

It sounds as though you are not using the latest version of Legacy
 (V7.0.4.6).

Also if you want them, check Include other spouses and spouses of
 siblings.
Then go to File Export to Legacy File, Give it a name and then
check all records with an individual tag of your tag number.
Use this file to produce your chart.
It takes longer to write than do!

I am not surprised that you are confused. All I produced was a direct line
descendant chart with siblings from one earliest male ancestor. I would need to
repeat it for the other male ancestor surnames if I was interested in them.It
is not a complete chart but a series of charts. I thought that Dawn was
interested in those with the same surnames.

  Judy,

I am a little confused or missing something in your reply to Dawn. I
understand creating the new file, but then how do I use the charting to produce
the file with all ancestors and their siblings? All I have been able to get is
the ancestors.
