RE: [LegacyUG] suggestion I submitted

2012-02-27 Thread Jan Roberts
Me too! I have never been able to see why it is seen as a problem that a
source might only refer to a particular item of information. The details of
the source clearly show what bit it refers to. If there is any doubt I might
add a note such as provided the second name of xyz or provided exact date of
birth rather than just year or something appropriate.

Cheers
Jan

It's quite possible that I will know, from a variety of Sources that
someone was born on ddmmm in Anytown, County, Someland but some of

are separate fields when it comes to sourcing.

Death certificates often give the place of birth for the deceased's parents
but not the date.

The census records also give a place of birth for the parents but not the
date.

If you use one of the above as a source for the date of birth/place of

Michele,

This is a suggestion which has been mooted many times over the years, together
with many similar instances. Given names and surnames come to mind where,
especially for females, one has to use a marriage for a maiden name having
already obtained the given name from a census.

Because we ask for a lot of stuff, and we haven't made enough noise about this
one, not to mention the things they need to add to attract new customers. Not
intending to sound as cynical as I do! Probably because I used to be in
software development. I'm sure there is some sort of change to the database,
and that logic is everywhere--these are the original fields we're talking about,
not recently added ones. And there is a workaround--using the notes (as already
suggested here), and I think some folks put something into the detail citation
text or comment to indicate what data specifically is supported by that source.

So why do you think they don’t change it if other people have suggested it?

Re: [LegacyUG] suggestion I submitted

2012-02-20 Thread Jerry
Yeah, I agree with that also. It would complicate things and make more
work for most people to have separate sources, I think. Instead, where
there are different sources for the birth date and birth place, could
you simply indicate:

Source for Date
Source for Place

or whatever, as part of the detail? I think that would be better than
adding a field that many people would consider not needed for most
records. --Jerry - http://www.MerriamFamilyTree.org
