come up with a better option.

I do very similar - Census - USA 1860 (Iroquois, IL), or Census - USA
1880 (Kings, NY)

Looking at my Master Source List now, I am not sure why I use precisely
that format because my UK Censuses, which came long before any US ones,
are in the format Census - 1861 England, not Country then Year! I think
I will change them now I have realised that. Country first, then year
makes most sense to me.

A follow-up question for those who have a census event. Do you have the
same Census event for all censuses, or do you have different events
for each, e.g 1900 US Census, 1881 British Census?

At the moment, since I only have British censuses, I've just used one
census event and used the date field to distinguish between them. I'm
wondering whether it is worth having one US Census event or whether
 the location will be enough?

I have Events named England Census, Wales Census, United States
Census and so on, with the Enumeration Date in the Date field and the
full location (including Country) in the Location field. For consistency,
all my locations include the Country, but I drop it for locations within
the UK in the Short Location Name.

and I do have a fact/event for each Census with the boxes filled in:

Would be happy to show example if anyone is interested (although I

One census event. In the Description field I identify US Federal or British.
The date I use is the actual enumeration date but just the year would be fine
if that is all you want. The Place field is, obviously, the city or township,
county and state of enumeration. In the Notes field I record the pertinent
information from the census.
The Event Definition is set up like so:

[HeShe] appeared on the [Desc] census [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]

So I end up with a sentence like this:

He appeared on the U. S. Federal census on 10 April 1930 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga
County, Ohio, USA. [Followed by information transcribed from the census]

This way the Event works for any country's census (or state census).

Yup. Using the SW template you will have an entry for every county.

Subject: [LegacyUG] 1930 US census

I've just found my first ancestor on a US Census and I'm a bit confused about
the way to set up my source writer source.

For British Censuses, I have one Source for each Census

1841 British Census
1851 British Census
etc.

When I tried to set up the Census for the USA, the source writer template asks
for State and County in the source, rather than the detail. Does this mean
that I have to have different sources for each County? I would have expected
to have one source for each US census and put the State and County in the
detail.

I used Census Records United States Federal Census records 1930
Population Schedule Online Images

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Tony
