Thank you Cathy that worked. Shame I had to do it though as I had done a lot of
work on the line I had to unlink!

June,
Children are linked to parent couples.
If you have Mary French linked to William Mallett and all the children linked
to this couple, then I would unlink the ones you don't know are his children
and then choose to add mother for them and choose to link to existing person.
That will create an unknown/blank father for them.

You'll then want to order the "spouses" for Mary French and mark on the
Marriage Information screen for each partner that they weren't married.

Here's a couple of articles that should help.

I cannot get my head around what is probably a very simple query.

Mary French is my 3rd great grandmother and her daughter, Mary Ann French
(1832) is my second great grandmother.

Mary Ann's parents are Mary French and unknown. Mary also has children
William Mallett French (1796) and Thomas French (1839). I can find no
record
of a father for any of these children, although from other documents I
have
found and details on his marriage certificate it would appear that a
William

Mallett, innkeeper is the father of William (Mallett) French. While his
possible father's name is not on his baptismal record it is on every other
document.

In 1856 when Mary Ann French marries (she is of full age) she lists her
parents as Mary French and John French, although I have found no record of
either him or a marriage and French is definitely Mary's maiden name.
I feel

Mary Ann did not want to have it on record that she is illegitimate.

I've just realised I have researched William Mallet as a spouse, but
actually until I can prove otherwise, he is no connection to me - am I
correct?

In which case my assumption is I leave him attached to William (Mallett)
French and remove him from the remainder of the family.

If that is correct could someone please tell me how I do that. Thank you

June
