I wrote a tiny linux bootloader (without a "stage 2") which is able to 
boot a single kernel image. Because of the size limit (446 byte) there 
is no support for a menu and there is no support to load an initial ramdisk.

Now I need some help to find possibly hidden bugs. I would be glad if 
someone (who is interested in it) plays around with it. The source file 
is available at http://sebastian-plotz.blogspot.de. Any comments and 
hints are desired.

I'm not sure if this bootloader is also useful for the book because GRUB 
is much more powerful and well tested.
