[lfs-support] usb mouse connects=disconnects repeatedly

2012-03-11 Thread Martins Gulbis
I just finished getting my LFS 7.0 system to finally boot ok. However
the usb mouse I have connected seems to be constantly disconnecting and
reconnecting after the system boots, filling the screen constantly
connect/disconnect messages like the following :

Thanks, I thought that the mouse may be the problem, but when I saw what
I believe is an attempt to debounce it , I was not sure.

We've never had a lang.dat file. If you want the 8859-6 locale, you can
generate it:

localedef -i ar_AE -f ISO-8859-6 ar_AE

Check glibc-2.14.1/localedata/SUPPORTED for other locale strings
supporting ISO-8859-6.

See Section 6.9 of the book.

Well, I bought and installed a new mouse. NO CHANGE. One interesting
thing that I did notice though is that the disconnects/re-connects occur
almost exactly every 60 seconds. I am not sure what to make of that.
I am hoping that someone may know how to stop this from happening. I
believe the other alternative would be to turn off USB Support-USB
verbose debug messages and USB announce new devices and rebuild the
kernel. I believe that would at least eliminate the messages from
constantly showing up.

Hello Martins,
It seems like a speed problem:

 ACK POWER sig=k CSC CONNECT
[ 186.450854] hub 1-0:1.0: port 2, status 0501, change 0001, 480 Mb/s

status 0x301
[ 186.811038] usb 2-2: new low speed USB device number 5 using uhci_hcd

Apparently the kernel can't decide between using UHCI (for USB 1.0) or
EHCI (for USB 2.0).
Is the OHCI HCD support activated in the kernel? (Which supports USB 1.1)
My guess will be to try with that.

Greetings,
Juan Alberto.

Greetings,

Hi Juan,
Thanks for the reply! I started with the config used for the ubuntu
system running on my system and ran make oldconfig. Currently under USB
support I have the following included:

Support for Host-side USB
   USB verbose debug messages
   USB announce new devices
  *** Miscellaneous USB options ***
USB device filesystem (DEPRECATED)
  USB Monitor

*** USB Host Controller Drivers ***
xHCI HCD (USB 3.0) support (EXPERIMENTAL)
EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support
  Root Hub Transaction Translators
  Improved Transaction Translator scheduling
OXU210HP HCD support
ISP 1760 HCD support
OHCI HCD support
UHCI HCD (most Intel and VIA) support

*** USB Device Class drivers ***
USB Printer support
USB Mass Storage support
The shared table of common (or usual) storage devices

Should I possibly not include some of this?

Martins

Re: [lfs-support] usb mouse connects=disconnects repeatedly

2012-03-11 Thread alupu
Hi Martins,

... the usb mouse I have connected seems to be constantly disconnecting and
reconnecting
after the system boots, filling the screen constantly connect/disconnect
 messages
 like the following ...

I wouldn't chuck my mouse out the window yet.
I've been plagued by these nonsensical (to me) messages for quite a long time.
For additional fun I even went to the '/etc/rc.d/init.d/localnet' script and
inserted
a read line
...
 stop)
log_info_msg Bringing down the loopback interface...
read
 ip link set lo down
...
Obviously after making a backup of the original file, etc.
The read command forces the script to stop advancing beyond it until
the user hits a key.

On rebooting the machine the display will stop at this next-to-last script
(the last is 'reboot') and after every minute or so I'd get a bunch of four
messages similar to yours (disconnect/connect) related to my
USB Microsoft mouse existence on my system

I'd watch the screen rapturously for about 5-10 min. (I don't have much of a
life)
and then give up (hitting a key) and go to yet another productive activity.

I'm truly very busy now but I remember I wrote to the guy who was responsible
for the kernel input drivers (and then some) and asked about this USB
phenomenon.
He answered my technical question very clearly and logically.
He should know.
I didn't understand (or agree) too much but it made me accept
the USB mouse with a smile on my face and live with it from then on.
Obviously, you get to accept the situation like car alarms and other life
vicissitudes
but life goes on anyway.

If you haven't gotten rid of your mouse and are still interested in
his wise words, I might be able to publish his answer for you in a few days.

Good luck in all your endeavors,

I did buy another inexpensive usb mouse and found that there was no
difference. I would be very interested in wise words of the person
responsible for the kernel input drivers. I would greatly appreciate it
if you could share them.

How about trying to remove things, to eliminate variables?

I'd start by removing:

* USB device fs (it says it's deprecated)
* xHCI HCD (USB 3.0) (it says it's experimental)
* USB Printer support (you're just trying to get your mouse working,
right?)
* USB Mass Storage support (again, just get mouse working 1st).
* USB Monitor (same reason)

I would also unplug everything except your keyboard mouse (everything:
storage, printers, other hubs, everything else).

I believe USB HID is important for keyboard mouse, too, though I couldn't
tell you specifically which kernel parameters for that.
