I had to reinstall without pam. Not sure what was wrong with my
configuration. But I can create an lfs passwd now.

[lfs-support] passwd lfs

2013-09-08 Thread Roger Koehler
Now that I can mount ext4, I've created the $LFS/tools directory and a
root link to it and I've created the lfs user, but now I'm getting an
error when I try to create a passwd for lfs:

root [ / ]# passwd lfs
passwd: Module is unknown
passwd: password unchanged

I can login to lfs without a passwd, and I suppose I could continue
with the build without a passwd. But I obviously have a disfunctional
system. I'll try reinstalling shadow.

Make sure you have tty device nodes otherwise no input will be available for
passwd.

[lfs-support] Passwd

2013-07-17 Thread francisco martinez
Hello, i made a lfs system, and i am already at blfs,i am trying to install
x server, and in the way, i was going to install sudo, after this was done,
i tried to use, but a problem comes up.
when i issue the command it wont let me type my password, seems the prompt
reads it too fast, its like it aint waiting for my reply, it reads (i
think) null and does this on my 3 attempts(very fast indeed).
i tried changing the password, with passwd and does the same.
any idea what could this be?

Absolutely right Bruce, thanks for picking that up. I turned on the dev
server this morning and entered the chroot but forgot to mount the
virtual file systems as well.

I think you are in chroot but do not have the virtual file systems
mounted. You need access to /dev (and perhaps /dev/pts) inside chroot
to use the passwd command. See Section 6.2.

Alternatively, I just copy /etc/{passwd,group,shadow,gshadow} from my
host to /mnt/lfs/etc. :)

[lfs-support] passwd not waiting for prompt

2013-05-22 Thread Geoff Swan
An interesting problem appeared during an LFS 7.3 build after the build
and installation of shadow.
Everything appeared successful, however when trying to set the root
passwd it fails to prompt for the new passwd.
It simply shows the lines below (as if a CR was hit) and returns to the
prompt.

root:/sources# passwd root
Changing password for root
Enter the new password (minimum of 5 characters)
Please use a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers.
Bad password: too short.
Warning: weak password (enter it again to use it anyway).
passwd: password changed.
root:/sources#

Any clues to further investigate this would be appreciated.
