[liberationtech] Burundi

Re: [liberationtech] Burundi
The Burundians I am in contact with have not mentioned a new internet issue since blocking of whatsapp and facebook which was easily circumvented with the use of VPNs. I last heard from my colleagues about 8 hours ago. At least one of them was tweeting an hour ago. There is definitely a climate of fear at the moment and a lack of access to basic necessities in communities with large populations of opposition to Nkurunziza. Re: [liberationtech] Whatsapp + textsecure?
+1 to the question As a related issue, at a recent event I raised whether Whatsapp or textsecure could be a suitable replacement for SMS in interaction with clients in mobile health programs. It seems like it could be a more privacy-protecting technology to transmit sensitive health records than SMS, if open whisper encryption really is implemented. However, those in the field said that without a public API, whatsapp is not currently a suitable SMS alternative. Does anyone have more info on why/whether this assertion is true? Does textsecure have this problem solved? Hi Brian, I can only encourage you to read the announcement of the partnership: https://whispersystems.org/blog/whatsapp/ https://whispersystems.org/blog/whatsapp/ As stated in the post: Your messages may already be encrypted Messages are opportunistically encrypted (if both receiving and sending client support it). We’ll also be surfacing options for key verification in clients as the protocol integrations are completed. A partnership was announced, not a full deployment.
