[liberationtech] Pegasus Exploits Hack Workshop

2017-01-23 Thread Yosem Companys
From: Priyanka Puram Sekhar

Our first workshop of the quarter will be a solid intro to practical
hacking.

Thanks!

Hey everyone!

Want to learn about the Pegasus iOS spyware that targeted human rights
activist Ahmed Mansoor last August? Join us at our hack workshop next
Tuesday! We will be discussing the Pegasus kernel exploits in detail,
including a live demo of the exploits in action on OS X.

Date: Tuesday, January 24, 5:00-6:00 pm
Location: Shriram 262

The Pegasus spyware (as featured in the New York Times
,
The Guardian
,
Wired
,
and more
)
was written by an Israeli company called the NSO Group, and used to target
Ahmed Mansoor, an internationally recognized human rights activist from the
United Arab Emirates. Pegasus exploited several iOS vulnerabilities,
including three zero-day vulnerabilities not known to Apple, worth an
estimated one million dollars on the black market.

We will be analyzing a use-after-free vulnerability that was used to take
control of the kernel. The content will be technical, so experience at
least at the level of CS107 is preferred. The demo will be done on OS X
Yosemite version 10.10.5.

This past December in Guadalajara, the annual meeting of the Internet
Global Forum IGF was held. The issues of Internet rights and privacy, and
the effects of information technology and the internet were debated and
discussed. The election of President Trump has escalated fears of attacks
on democratic communication rights while the privatization of the internet
grows. This forum, featuring attendees at the recent IGF meeting, will look
at the issue of protection of communication rights and privacy. It will
look at how the information technology is affecting workers, as well as
private sector control of the Internet through projects such as the
Facebook led-partnership Internet.org.

The rise of Big Data, freedom of information and user-friendly software has
contributed to the popularity of infographics, data visualizations and mapping
for civic engagement and advocacy. This surge in data visualization brings with
it opportunities for information re-use, increased transparency, and new forms
of civic participation. Yet visualizing data for social justice also comes with
its own set of challenges . From issues of security and tracking down hard to
find information, to the ethics of making infographics out of death and
suffering, participatory practices of data visualization often take place on
ambiguous ethical terrain.

SHOWCASE

Short presentations of recent data visualization and mapping work from critical
cartographers, journalists, designers and social justice campaigners will be
followed by audience discussion. Together we will explore what it means to
visualize for justice today.

Full Line-up of speakers coming soon!

YOUR WORK HERE!

Want to feature your maps & visualizations? We will have a running slideshow of
social justice maps & visualizations at the event. To include your work in our
slideshow:

catherine_digna...@emerson.edu and
akshaya_saw...@emerson.edu.

I can see that I'm going to have to post some basic security/privacy
recommendations again. But in the interim, here's the short version:

Facebook is what you do to your enemies, not your allies.

As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more
closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the
plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the
