*The Open Revolution: rewriting the rules of the information age*

Hi thackday,

*This is one-off email to share with you the release of my book, The Open
Revolution: rewriting the rules of the information age.*

Get the book on OpenRevolution.net »

This book is about something bigger than tech itself. It’s about
information, ownership and control in a digital age. It talks directly to a
number of lives issues, ranging from access to medicines, to the future of
work and privacy, digital monopolies and power in a connected world.

Will the digital revolution give us digital dictatorships or digital
democracies? Forget everything you think you know about the digital age.
It’s not about privacy, surveillance, AI or blockchain—it’s about
*ownership*. Because in a digital age, who owns information controls the
future.

Today’s “Closed” digital economy is the source of problems ranging from the
power of a handful of tech monopolies to control how we think and vote, to
unaffordable medicines, to growing inequality. The solution is not
technological but political: a choice between making information Open,
shared by all, or making it Closed, exclusively owned and controlled.

By choosing Open we can make a more equitable, innovative and profitable
future for all.

Subject: [tor-talk] New report: How Pakistan blocked news outlets,
social media sites, and IM apps amidst protests
To: tor-t...@lists.torproject.org

Hello,

Today, in collaboration with Bytes for All Pakistan, OONI published a
research study titled "How Pakistan blocked news outlets, social media
sites, and IM apps amidst protests".

Our study is available here:
https://ooni.torproject.org/post/how-pakistan-blocked-social-media/ and
http://content.bytesforall.pk/node/224

Last weekend, a number of social media sites and news outlets were
reportedly blocked in Pakistan during Islamist protests.

Through the collection and analysis of OONI network measurements from
Pakistan, we confirmed the DNS-based blocking of:

* 14 news websites

* Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram

* Facebook Messenger, Telegram, WhatsApp's web interface (web.whatsapp.com)

All of these censorship events were temporarily implemented last weekend
(25th & 26th November), and no longer seem to be in place (at least not in
the networks where tests were/are run). This highlights the need to
monitor internet censorship on an ongoing basis around the world.

In our previous study with Bytes for All
(https://ooni.torproject.org/post/pakistan-internet-censorship/),
Pakistani ISPs appeared to be applying "smart filters", selectively
blocking the HTTP versions of certain Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter
webpages, rather than blocking access to entire domains.

Last weekend, however, these sites were blocked entirely.

This is also the first time that we have collected technical evidence on
the censorship of news websites in Pakistan.

In addition to network measurement findings, our report also includes
censorship circumvention advice and information on how to reproduce this
study (in Pakistan or elsewhere).

Thanks for reading!

~ The OONI team.

Subject: Introducing Unnon: The Network of the Unknowns

Dear nettimers,

I'm contacting you all to say that Unnon, the network of unknowns, is
becoming a reality. Unnon is now available in its first version, for iPhone
users, at Apples's App Store. Android and Web versions should come in
January or February.

A few days ago, we were the subject of a story by Folha de S.Paulo, the
biggest Brazilian newspaper, which meant Unnon became officially launched
in Beta. The response so far has been very good, with many people praising
Unnon for finally creating an environment with no filter bubbles.

We've achieved that by developing the first ever social network with
temporary connections. That means that not only does Unnon connect people,
but it also disconnects them. That is why Unnon is the network of unknowns:
it connects people who do not know each other, for up to 30 days only, and
after that they can never be reconnected. So filter bubbles are never
formed, barriers between people are naturally broken, and users' networks
change all the time. Also: there's no private messaging on Unnon, every
conversation is public, which makes personal attacks, trolling and criminal
activity much less likely; and all content disappears after one month, for
Unnon is about what people think at a particular moment, not what they did
in the past.

This is our revamped website: www.unnon.com

And our page on the App Store: https://itunes.apple.co
m/gb/app/unnon/id1219482455?mt=8

The Folha de S.Paulo article, which is also attached in this email (in
Portuguese): http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/mercado/2017/11/
1932361-brasileiros-criam-rede-social-que-promete-ser-a-prov
a-de-bolhas.shtml

Over the next few months I will showcase Unnon at universities, and have
conversations and debates in Europe. I would love to take the concept of
the network of unknowns to internet and tech-related communities and hope
that Unnon will be capable of bringing a new perspective to the social
media landscape, with less divisions, less extremism and more dialogue.

If you want to contact us, drop me an email (simoes.roge...@gmail.com)

Best wishes,

Rogerio

Why is software created using taxpayers’ money not released as Free Software?

should be public code as well.

Code paid by the people should be available to the people!

[liberationtech] Fwd: It’s time to end impunity for attacks on journalists

It’s time to end impunity for attacks on journalists
[image: ARTICLE 19, 2017]

In 2017, being a journalist anywhere in the world carries major risks. This
year alone at least 55 journalists have been killed

across
25 different countries. In 2016, the number killed was 102. On top of this,
hundreds more are attacked, threatened, arbitrarily arrested and detained,
and are subject to enforced disappearance.

According to UNESCO only 10% of journalists' killings are fully resolved,
and the perpetrators brought to justice. This impunity drives a cycle of
violence. When perpetrators of attacks walk free, others are emboldened to
commit similar crimes without fearing accountability. This cycle must end.

On International Day to End Impunity, ARTICLE 19 calls on governments
around the world
to
make good on their commitments to HRC resolution 33/2 and take urgent steps
to break the cycle of violence inflicted on journalists. Our guide

commitments to safety of journalists. And we call on the media, civil
society and human rights defenders to use our guide

as a checklist to hold governments to their commitments to *prevent*,
*protect* and *prosecute*.

[liberationtech] Fwd: Algorithmic / Biometric Governmentality

-- Forwarded message --
From: Ian Alan Paul
Date: Sun, Oct 29, 2017 at 7:21 PM
Subject: Algorithmic / Biometric Governmentality
To: nettim...@mail.kein.org

This very digestible short talk (22:00) on the emerging threat of
algorithmic/biometric governmentality from Zeynep Tufekci may be of
interest to those who research control societies, etc..:
https://www.ted.com/talks/zeynep_tufekci_we_re_building_a_dystopia_just_to_make_people_click_on_ads

The transcript is below:

So when people voice fears of artificial intelligence, very often,
they invoke images of humanoid robots run amok. You know? Terminator?
You know, that might be something to consider, but that's a distant
threat. Or, we fret about digital surveillance with metaphors from the
past. "1984," George Orwell's "1984," it's hitting the bestseller
lists again. It's a great book, but it's not the correct dystopia for
the 21st century. What we need to fear most is not what artificial
intelligence will do to us on its own, but how the people in power
will use artificial intelligence to control us and to manipulate us in
novel, sometimes hidden, subtle and unexpected ways. Much of the
technology that threatens our freedom and our dignity in the near-term
future is being developed by companies in the business of capturing
and selling our data and our attention to advertisers and others:
Facebook, Google, Amazon, Alibaba, Tencent.

Now, artificial intelligence has started bolstering their business as
well. And it may seem like artificial intelligence is just the next
thing after online ads. It's not. It's a jump in category. It's a
whole different world, and it has great potential. It could accelerate
our understanding of many areas of study and research. But to
paraphrase a famous Hollywood philosopher, "With prodigious potential
comes prodigious risk."

Now let's look at a basic fact of our digital lives, online ads.
Right? We kind of dismiss them. They seem crude, ineffective. We've
all had the experience of being followed on the web by an ad based on
something we searched or read. You know, you look up a pair of boots
and for a week, those boots are following you around everywhere you
go. Even after you succumb and buy them, they're still following you
around. We're kind of inured to that kind of basic, cheap
manipulation. We roll our eyes and we think, "You know what? These
things don't work." Except, online, the digital technologies are not
just ads. Now, to understand that, let's think of a physical world
example. You know how, at the checkout counters at supermarkets, near
the cashier, there's candy and gum at the eye level of kids? That's
designed to make them whine at their parents just as the parents are
about to sort of check out. Now, that's a persuasion architecture.
It's not nice, but it kind of works. That's why you see it in every
supermarket. Now, in the physical world, such persuasion architectures
are kind of limited, because you can only put so many things by the
cashier. Right? And the candy and gum, it's the same for everyone,
even though it mostly works only for people who have whiny little
humans beside them. In the physical world, we live with those
limitations.

In the digital world, though, persuasion architectures can be built at
the scale of billions and they can target, infer, understand and be
deployed at individuals one by one by figuring out your weaknesses,
and they can be sent to everyone's phone private screen, so it's not
visible to us. And that's different. And that's just one of the basic
things that artificial intelligence can do.

Now, let's take an example. Let's say you want to sell plane tickets
to Vegas. Right? So in the old world, you could think of some
demographics to target based on experience and what you can guess. You
might try to advertise to, oh, men between the ages of 25 and 35, or
people who have a high limit on their credit card, or retired couples.
Right? That's what you would do in the past.

With big data and machine learning, that's not how it works anymore.
So to imagine that, think of all the data that Facebook has on you:
every status update you ever typed, every Messenger conversation,
every place you logged in from, all your photographs that you uploaded
there. If you start typing something and change your mind and delete

So what happens then is, by churning through all that data, these

[liberationtech] Outreachy - Internerships for Underrrepresented People in Tech

2017-09-23 Thread Cecilia Tanaka
Much love and good luck! <3

Ceci, late, always late... Sorry, I was invited to be the next
Alice's White Rabbit and I am trying... :P

==

Outreachy internships are open internationally to women (cis and
trans), trans men, and genderqueer people. Internships are also open
to residents and nationals of the United States of any gender who are
Black/African American, Hispanic/Latin@, Native American/American
Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander. We are
planning to expand the program to more participants from
underrepresented backgrounds in the future.

Outreachy provides three-month internships for people from groups
traditionally underrepresented in tech. Interns are paid a stipend of
$5,500 and have a $500 travel stipend available to them. Interns work
remotely with mentors from Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)
communities on projects ranging from programming, user experience,
documentation, illustration and graphical design, to data science.
Interns often find employment after their internship with Outreachy
sponsors or in jobs that use the FOSS skills they learned during their
internship.

I'm glad to see that Cecilia shared her request for projects with the
Hackerspaces list.

I'm one of the people involved with Liberationtech. I helped lead
Liberationtech from 2006 until recently, so I'm in a good position to
answer the question posed to Cecilia.

Liberationtech subscribers typically write about any topic at the
intersection of tech and public goods, including but not limited to any of
the following:

   - Censorship, repression, and freedom (e.g., Freedom of Expression -
FoE, Free Speech, NetFreedom, Right to Information - RTI)
   - Democracy, politics, elections, and voting (e.g., Netroots, Tea Party)
   - Activism, protest, and movements (e.g., Occupy, Anonymous, Hacktivism)
   - Human rights
   - Security (e.g., cybersecurity)
   - Privacy
   - Development (e.g., Information and Communication Technologies for
   Development - ICT4D, Tech for Development - Tech4Dev, Global Development -
   GlobalDev)
   - Education (e.g., Information and Communication Technologies for
   Education - ICT4E)
   - Governance and accountability (e.g., eGovernance - eGov, Open
   Governance - OpenGov, Governance 2.0 - gov20)
   - Health (e.g., eHealth, mHealth)
   - Drones
   - Environment
   - Entrepreneurship (e.g., Social Entrepreneurship - socent)
   - Social science (e.g., impact of technology on society)
   - Policy / law (e.g., tech law, copyright law)

That said, we're very open minded. If there are other topics that you feel
should be included in Liberationtech, please let us know. We're pretty much
driven by the interest of our subscribers. So if you're passionate about a
given subject excluded above, please join us and tell us about it!

Best,
Yosem

Now I apologize in advance for this (long) alarmist opinion (and a bit
of a hijack), but here goes:

I don't think many people actually understand the seriousness of the
problems we, as users/inhabitants of the Internet, are actually facing
today.
I think it is done! It's over! The Internet was a cool experiment but it
has failed. We lost that game and need wipe it clean & start over again.
The Internet has not turned out to be this great engine of empowerment
and democratization. It has instead turned out to be a most superb
instrument for repression and control.
The more I think about this, the more I become convinced that there is
very little to be salvaged from it.

To many folks, the Internet, in effect, is facebook, Google, Amazon,
Microsoft and a couple of other large players/feudal lords (who they are
is depending on your locality); everything else is something they get to
*through* their feudal lord, that is if they ever leave the feudal lands
(cf. Google AMP).
Nation-states are seeing this as well and they too want their slice of
the cake of control - after all, the only purpose of any government of
the day, is to still be the government of the day, tomorrow. And what a
gorgeous way to see into the future by tapping into the thoughts and
desires of your populace...
They either become the One Pipe everyone talks through and watch for
anything on that pipe, they co-opt (some of) these large players or they
work on a combination of them.

Instead of a tool for freedom, the Internet has become a tool for
oppression: everything you do online is being monitored, monetized,
processed, quantified and then used against you, never in your favor.
Whether this is as mundane as hiking the price for whatever locked-down
widget you're buying the next day from a shopping website that uses
dynamic pricing or as life-altering as to stick charges against you
based on your online habits.

Back in the day, surveillance was creepy because you could see the guy
in the raincoat with the newspaper following you. It was expensive to do
so it was done sparingly. Nowadays, it is cheaper to monitor everything
and anything, 24/7/365[.25] than it is to target the surveillance so why
not put everyone under surveillance. And you don't ever see the vast
armies of faceless machines that do the monitoring, those are hidden
away in far-away data centers. The epitome of a panopticon!
It's also cheaper to keep the data around than it is to put in place
systems that sunset data after a certain age, so why not store
everything forever? After all, we may want to go back to "T minus 20
years" in case we want to /really/ hurt you. /You/ may not remember what
you did then, but /we/ certainly do!

To come back to the subject of censorship: I believe it was Noam Chomsky
who uttered that "...the smart way to keep people passive and obedient
is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very
lively debate within that spectrum..." I think that this is a very good
description of what the Internet/Panopticon has become and is on the
path of becoming even more.

As to Lauren's point regarding "My view is that Google should

Idiots on Canadian Supreme Court demand right of GLOBAL Google censorship!

Google Must Delete Search Results Worldwide, Supreme Court of Canada Rules

http://fortune.com/2017/06/28/canada-supreme-court-google/

The Supreme Court of Canada ruled against Google on Wednesday
in a closely-watched intellectual property case over whether
judges can apply their own country's laws to all of the
Internet. In a 7-2 decision, the court agreed a British
Columbia judge had the power to issue an injunction forcing
Google to scrub search results about pirated products not just
in Canada, but everywhere else in the world too.

What a complete batch of power-grabbing idiots on the Canadian Supreme
Court. My God, they demand the right to impose GLOBAL censorship? What
total asses. Beyond stupid. More dangerous than President Chump when
it comes to speech rights. Because the EU wants to do the same thing
with their nightmare "Right To Be Forgotten." And China too. And
Russia. And France. And more. And there are vile, sick politicians
here in the USA who would do this same thing if they could figure out
how to get it past the First Amendment. It's a race to the lowest
common denominator censorship bottom. My view is that Google should
consider cutting off all services to countries that make such demands.
Period. Otherwise, one day Google Search results pages will be nothing
but a big white empty space.

[liberationtech] Fwd: The Red Pill Expo: Because Something Is Wrong

The Red-Pill Expo is a gathering event for truth seekers who undertand
the relevance of the allegorical sci-fi movie, The Matrix.

The film’s message is that most humans are connected to a matrix of
illusion that prevents them from realizing they merely are tools and
energy sources that serve unseen controllers. At a critical point in
the plot, the hero, whose name is Neo, is given a choice. If he wishes
to return to the illusion, he can take a blue pill. If he chooses to
see reality and break free of the controllers, he must take the red
pill – which he does.

That, however, is just the beginning. The controllers must destroy Neo
before he can awaken enough humans to dismantle the matrix and set
everyone free. The parallel to real life is chilling.

In today’s world, there are untold legions of people who have taken
the red pill and now are free of the grand illusion as it relates to
wars, terrorism, politics, education, money and banking, the judicial
system, elections, health care, and everything in between.

The Red-Pill Expo gives them a chance to meet each other, to realize
they are not alone, to develop ways to network and help each other, to
form a freedom coalition, to discover exactly who their controllers
are and, finally, to participate in activities that will dismantle the
matrix.

From: Peter Golding

Colleagues will be sad to learn of the death on Sunday of Denis
McQuail. Denis was one of the giants of our field, the author of
numerous original works, probably the field’s major textbook, and one
of the founders of the European Journal of Communication. Most of all
he was a good friend and incomparable mentor for many in the field,
and he will be badly missed and long remembered.

==

Sorry if sounds too OT to pay tribute to a dead professor, but Prof.
McQuail wrote brilliant works about mass communication, about the
relations between media and society, talking about political, social
and cultural aspects of freedom of expression, censorship, information
of public interest, and so many concepts we study and defend daily...
He deserves this last goodbye.

It's always sad when a teacher, an author dies. He will live in his
works, but it's always strange to me to know you will never say hello
again to a person. I never said 'Hello, I love your work!' to Prof.
McQuail and now I will never say...

[liberationtech] Invitation to LibTech community (was Re: Addressing Imbalances in Communications via Cryptographic Redaction)

2017-06-25 Thread Cecilia Tanaka
Hi, Brian! Thanks for sharing your time and efforts with the world! :D

It's always great to hear about new projects in the whole world, so I
will use your message to invite all the other members of LibTech
community to share news and projects using technology to make better
our world. And, of course, news and information about how
technological resources can be unfortunately used against the society
too.

A simple example: - I do love drones. They are amazing and can help
researchers in several ways, but I always feel miserable, really bad,
when they are used for spying, for brutally violating the privacy of
people. :(

Zack - copied in this message - sent in private a brilliant and short
analysis of Kenya's political situation and how it can affect the
development of the country in all aspects, including the technological
one. I would like to learn more about the tech situation in other
countries in a personal perspective, not necessarily under a technical
or academic point of view. I was trying to write a little about
Brazil to give him an answer, but... uh, sorry! Being sincere, my
post was stinking so much I was afraid my neighbors could think I was
hiding a corpse in my notebook. I will try to write something less
stinky later, I promise. :)

Well, the usual pattern of oppressive governments in the whole world
is to cut and/or to censure the Internet, the freedom of the press,
and the communication in general. There are great projects being
created to avoid this kind of situation and all of them need our help.
If you have an idea or know some good project, please share it with
the community. And if you need help with your own project, ask for
help. Do not feel the fear of being judged or criticized. You can
not receive a public answer, but can have a good surprise in private.
I always receive great feedbacks in private. Also some offenses, but
it's part of being alive, haha!! ;)

Tender hugs and millions of little kisses from Brazil! Take care and
have a great and happy life, dear all! <3

Ceci

PS: - Yep, millions of kisses seem too much, but you can stock them
to the sad or needy moments... You can get a daily little kiss with
your coffee or tea to make you smile, or put some of them in your
pocket or purse to use when necessary. Be happy and feel special:
you received millions of Nippo-Brazilian kisses!!! :D

PS's PS: - If you hate me and don't want my kisses, donate them.
Donating love is always a good idea! <3

Protecting National Security Whistleblowers: A New Program

ExposeFacts, a project of the Institute for Public Accuracy, is
pleased to announce the launch of a new Whistleblower and Source
Protection Program (WHISPeR). WHISPeR makes ExposeFacts the first
journalistic organization to house a program dedicated entirely to
providing affordable legal representation to whistleblowers and
sources. See video announcement.

To head WHISPeR, ExposeFacts has brought in internationally renowned
whistleblower and human rights attorney Jesselyn Radack as National
Security and Human Rights Director. Ms. Radack represents NSA
whistleblowers Edward Snowden, Thomas Drake and William Binney, CIA
torture whistleblower John Kiriakou and dozens of anonymous national
security and intelligence whistleblowers and sources who have been
fired, criminally investigated and punished for shedding light on
government and corporate illegalities.

Ms. Radack will be joined by National Security and Human Rights Deputy
Director Kathleen McClellan, whose decade-plus of legal experience
advocating for civil liberties and human rights reforms provides
invaluable expertise and support.

Launched by the Institute for Public Accuracy in 2014, ExposeFacts
promotes whistleblowing with a unique blend of independent journalism,
methodical organizing and public outreach. Institute for Public
Accuracy Executive Director Norman Solomon said:

“The government’s unprecedented crackdown on ‘national security’
whistleblowers using the Espionage Act has created a chilling
atmosphere for sources and journalists, giving rise to a larger war on
information that the public has a right to know. At ExposeFacts, our
message from the beginning has been, ‘whistleblowers welcome.’ With
the launch of WHISPeR, headed by the unmatched legal powerhouse
Jesselyn Radack, ExposeFacts can now provide affordable top-notch
legal representation directly to some whistleblowers and sources.”

WHISPeR National Security and Human Rights Director Jesselyn Radack
said: “ExposeFacts is a cutting-edge initiative already recognizing
the need for better source protection and making a tremendous positive
impact for whistleblowers and investigative journalism. At WHISPeR, we
provide journalists, sources, whistleblowers, and hacktivists with
critical affordable legal protection, public advocacy, and the latest
in encryption technology. It takes courageous individuals to speak
truth to power. WHISPeR protects and amplifies their voices.”

[liberationtech] Fwd: Top German Court on Internet tracking: IP addresses are personal data

2017-05-19 Thread Cecilia Tanaka
-- Forwarded message --

From:

Press release:

+++ Top German Court on Internet tracking: IP addresses are personal
data +++

This week the German Federal Supreme Court (Bundesgerichtshof) looked
into whether website operators such as Google or Facebook may record
which information Internet users read, post or searched on the web – or
whether citizens have a right to use the Internet anonymously. The
ruling concerns the case of German pirate party politician and privacy
activist Patrick Breyer who is suing the German government over logging
all visits to government websites (Case VI ZR 135/13).

According to the court’s ruling, users‘ IP addresses qualify as personal
data and may be collected only where allowed by data protection law.

Contrary to some reports, the Court did not decide[2] on whether website
operators may retain IP addresses in bulk to guard against online
attacks. Instead the court referred the case back to the Court of Appeal
(Landgericht) of Berlin in order to establish a sufficient factual basis
concerning the necessity and proportionality of such metadata retention.
The court’s press release[3] translates as follows:

„In the present case the Court of Appeal’s findings were insufficient to
balance the interests at stake. The Court of Appeal did not sufficiently
establish whether retaining the applicant’s IP addresses is necessary in
order to ensure the (general) operability of the services used. The
defendent concedes that it does not retain IP addresses regarding many
of its websites due to the low risk of an attack. There are no findings
as to the risk of attack suffered by other federal websites the
applicant wishes to use. After establishing these facts the Court of
Appeal will need to balance, as required by the European Court of
Justice, the defendent’s interest in ensuring the operability of its
online media services against the applicant’s interest or fundamental
rights and freedoms. In this context due regard shall be given to the
issues of general prevention and law enforcement.“

Breyer calls on the Commission to act on the lack of specific EU rules
protecting on-line privacy: „The Commission should amend EU legislation
to specifically prohibit any blanket recording of our Internet use by
website operators. Europe should reject the ruthless NSA method of
‚collecting it all‘ and enforce our right to freedom of information and
expression in the digital age.“

Breyer argues that websites can be safe without tracking every user
across every page: „This Internet stalking is about as useful as
mounting a CCTV camera next to an open warehouse door. We need secure IT
systems, not a general suspicion against Europe’s 400 million Internet
users“.

Website operators often record and track their users online behaviour
for commercial purposes, but also to disclose records to law enforcement
agencies and owners of copyright-protected content upon request. Breyer
is challenging this practise and demands that operators anonymize users‘
IP addresses:

„Banning governments and Internet giants from identifiably recording our
browsing habits is the only way to effectively shield our private life
and interests, to prevent erroneous infringement notices and false
suspicions. IP addresses have turned out to be extremely prone to error
und unreliable when used to identify users. For as long as browsing the
Internet can result in prosecution, there is no real freedom of
information and expression on-line.

Nobody has a right to record everything we do and say on-line.
Generation Internet has a right to access information on-line just as
unmonitored and without inhibition as our parents read the paper,
listened to the radio or browsed books.“

Subject: [Webinar] Decrypting the WannaCry ransomware: Why is it
happening and (how) is it going to end?
To: cecilia.tan...@gmail.com

Dear members ,

As a result of last cyber attack that hit many countries worldwide,
our partners from DiploFoundation and the Geneva Internet Platform
have organised an open webinar for the community to provide an
analysis of the main technological, geopolitical, legal, and economic
aspects of the ransomware. Experts from different fields will discuss
why ransomware has become a major issue: Can such attacks be prevented
by technological measures alone? Is there a need for a legal response,
such as Microsoft’s proposal for the Digital Geneva Convention? Is
raising more awareness among users the ultimate solution?

The webinar will discuss whether it is possible to put a stop to
malicious software, or whether they should be considered the price we
have to pay for the many advantages of the Internet. Choices on policy
will have to be made sooner rather than later. The aim of the
discussion is to explore and help make informed policy choices.

How to participate?

Date: Tomorrow - Thursday, 18th May, at 11:00 UTC (13:00 CEST).

The virtual event is open for everyone , just register under this link
: https://www.diplomacy.edu/registrations/wannacry-webinar

Register to book your seat. The webinar link will be e-mailed to
registrants one hour before the start.

Hi, Sparc Flow!

I didn't read the new book yet, but your first book was pretty good,
my dear. Thank you a lot for sharing knowledge! Aww, it's always so
cute... #love <3

Just to remember the LibTech list, Yosem sent the message about Sparc

Hello List,

As a way of giving back to the community, I want to share an ebook
about pentesting and ethical hacking. You can have it for free here :
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MTDLGQQ

It illustrates a (fictitious) full hacking scenario: from creating a
malicious file in a phishing campaign, all the way to exfiltrating
data from a Mainframe (while knocking off some windows domains along
the way).
I obviously could not do it without the great tools and authors in
this community. Many thanks to all.
If I missed someone when crediting a tool or technique please feel
free to write me :-)

Tchuss people !

[liberationtech] Three challenges for the web, according to Sir Tim Berners-Lee #HappyBirthdayWWW

2017-03-12 Thread Cecilia Tanaka
# http://webfoundation.org/2017/03/web-turns-28-letter

"Three challenges for the web, according to its inventor."

Web Foundation · March 12, 2017

Today is the world wide web’s 28th birthday. Here’s a message from our
founder and web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee on how the web has
evolved, and what we must do to ensure it fulfils his vision of an
equalising platform that benefits all of humanity.

This letter is also available en français, en español, em português
and بالعربية.

—

Today marks 28 years since I submitted my original proposal for the
world wide web. I imagined the web as an open platform that would
allow everyone, everywhere to share information, access opportunities
and collaborate across geographic and cultural boundaries. In many
ways, the web has lived up to this vision, though it has been a
recurring battle to keep it open. But over the past 12 months, I’ve
become increasingly worried about three new trends, which I believe we
must tackle in order for the web to fulfill its true potential as a
tool which serves all of humanity.

1) We’ve lost control of our personal data

The current business model for many websites offers free content in
exchange for personal data. Many of us agree to this – albeit often by
accepting long and confusing terms and conditions documents – but
fundamentally we do not mind some information being collected in
exchange for free services. But, we’re missing a trick. As our data is
then held in proprietary silos, out of sight to us, we lose out on the
benefits we could realise if we had direct control over this data, and
chose when and with whom to share it. What’s more, we often do not
have any way of feeding back to companies what data we’d rather not
share – especially with third parties – the T&Cs are all or nothing.

This widespread data collection by companies also has other impacts.
Through collaboration with – or coercion of – companies, governments
are also increasingly watching our every move online, and passing
extreme laws that trample on our rights to privacy. In repressive
regimes, it’s easy to see the harm that can be caused – bloggers can
be arrested or killed, and political opponents can be monitored. But
even in countries where we believe governments have citizens’ best
interests at heart, watching everyone, all the time is simply going
too far. It creates a chilling effect on free speech and stops the web
from being used as a space to explore important topics, like sensitive
health issues, sexuality or religion.

2) It’s too easy for misinformation to spread on the web

Today, most people find news and information on the web through just a
handful of social media sites and search engines. These sites make
more money when we click on the links they show us. And, they choose
what to show us based on algorithms which learn from our personal data
that they are constantly harvesting. The net result is that these
sites show us content they think we’ll click on – meaning that
misinformation, or ‘fake news’, which is surprising, shocking, or
designed to appeal to our biases can spread like wildfire. And through
the use of data science and armies of bots, those with bad intentions
can game the system to spread misinformation for financial or
political gain.

3) Political advertising online needs transparency and understanding

Political advertising online has rapidly become a sophisticated
industry. The fact that most people get their information from just a
few platforms and the increasing sophistication of algorithms drawing
upon rich pools of personal data, means that political campaigns are
now building individual adverts targeted directly at users. One source
suggests that in the 2016 US election, as many as 50,000 variations of
adverts were being served every single day on Facebook, a
near-impossible situation to monitor. And there are suggestions that
some political adverts – in the US and around the world – are being
used in unethical ways – to point voters to fake news sites, for
instance, or to keep others away from the polls. Targeted advertising
allows a campaign to say completely different, possibly conflicting
things to different groups. Is that democratic?

—

These are complex problems, and the solutions will not be simple. But
a few broad paths to progress are already clear. We must work together
with web companies to strike a balance that puts a fair level of data
control back in the hands of people, including the development of new
technology like personal “data pods” if needed and exploring
alternative revenue models like subscriptions and micropayments. We
must fight against government over-reach in surveillance laws,
including through the courts if necessary. We must push back against
misinformation by encouraging gatekeepers such as Google and Facebook
to continue their efforts to combat the problem, while avoiding the
creation of any central bodies to decide what is “true” or not. We
need more algorithmic transparency

Hello Folks,

As you might be aware, its been 45 days since the government of
Cameroon shut down the internet to the people of Southern Cameroons.
With no where else to turn, I thought, you may be the answer to our
problem of Internet shut down in Southern Cameroons.

I am writing to solicit your help to find an answer to the internet
shut down problem in Cameroon.

I am writing to find out if anyone of has any ideas on how we could
get internet in Southern Cameroons through the meshnets.
Not being a technie, I am unable to really understand how it works.
Could someone with experience help?

Is there is any technology out there that can provide satellite
internet without equipment on the ground. I have done all kinds of
internet search to find answers, but I am unable to come up with an
answer.
Or, is it possible for any telecommunication company here in the US or
elsewhere to issue SIM cards that can enable the folks in Southern
Cameroons to get internet?

You might notice that my questions may not make any sense. Yes, I am
very frustrated, so there might not be any logic in my thought
process.

Any help, ideas, contacts you can provide me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Isaac

Re: [liberationtech] Who is receiving messages from Shara Cruz?

2017-03-01 Thread Cecilia Tanaka
It seems a bot and got some addresses here, but maybe in my specific
case, it was mixed with e-mail spoofing, because some of "her"
messages were answers to my comments on this list, my dear Yosem. I
received 10 messages and the last 6 of them were very disgusting, with
explicit p0rn content, asking me to "trust her" and a lot of things
more. Ugh!!! :((

Already blocked "her" and "her sisters" (told Yosem earlier about
other messages not related to this list, but using the same address
@commander.ovh, the same vocabulary and pics patterns), but it's
probably a personal problem only. I need to control better my
'awesomeness' to avoid creepy fans, hahaha!! You know, everybody can
be cool, but awesome takes practice! ;)

(Nah, my ego trips are more modest, I'm joking!)

FYI, today the Internet Society joined with 50 other organizations to issue
a joint statement expressing concerns about a proposal to require
disclosure of social media account passwords as a condition of entry to the
U.S.:

https://plus.google.com/+InternetSociety/posts/92XyJvx4yzk

Additionally, we also published a supporting post explaining more about why
social media accounts are of such a great concern:

https://www.internetsociety.org/blog/tech-matters/2017/02/

We will be circulating that on our social channels as well.

I will search for voluntary help to fine tuning the code, dear. If I try

the nuclear codes, ouch! :P

Hi Rick! Loved your suggestion, thanks! :*

Yesterday night, I asked some tips, informations and pratical suggestions
in some groups, but had no many feedbacks yet. I was searching for some
apps and - wow! - most of them want complete access to my account,
password included. I bet there is some hidden clausule saying I am also
donating my soul and all my body organs! Ugh, ugh, ugh! :P

One of my friends suggested I should code and create it, and sent me one of
his experiences using tweepy.

http://ocarneiro.github.io/blog/2016_02_01-TwitterReach.html (My friend,
Otavio, is the lovely guy juggling! :D)

http://tweepy.readthedocs.io/en/v3.5.0/getting_started.html#introduction

I am still talking with him, but unfortunately my "coding style" (cof,
cof!) is so very disastrous, so horrendous that almost became a legend
among some Python groups. When I try to code apparently I can summon
Godzilla, Cthulhu, all the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse, but I can't make
anything good... There is a joke on another list which says the last time
I tried to code, Trump won the elections, meh! :((

Some years ago, when I told to a friend I was reading the Python Cookbook,
he said: - "Hey, wasn't you a veggie? Snakes taste good? Which recipe
you will cook?" Uff, some North Americans still think we eat snakes and
monkeys on South America and that Amazon Forest is nearby, on my backyard
maybe... :((

they--and their industry--can survive in a Facebook-dominated

F
acebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has just published a 5,700
word "letter" on his profile, where he asserts that Facebook
represents one of history's "great leaps." Though he covers a
number of topics, what's most interesting is how he positions
Facebook as a force for political change in the coming years.
His goals are lofty, sometimes even grandiose. That's not the
problem. The problem is a fundamental contradiction built
into the way he hopes to create what he calls a "global
community" by essentially gerrymandering the Internet.

I loved the message, but I don't trust the sender. There's something
strange screaming "It's A Trap!" very loud, guys. :-/

There are lots of stories on Internet saying that Zuckerberg wants to be a
presidential candidate in the next elections. He said is not an Atheist

elect an Atheist... :P

I respect a lot Atheist people, but I also respect a lot who believes in
God, Godesses, Prophets, Deities, etc, etc... Mirimir is my imaginary
friend and I almost married under the blessings of the Flying Spaghetti
Monster (it's serious, one of my best friends is a wise Pastafarian
"Minister"!), so I can't complain about the other persons' imaginary

The problem was exactly this: I had no electronics with me and they were
searching for 'something'. I had the same kind of problem twice in the
same country. The last but one travel was less traumatic physically, but
was a similar disaster in psychological aspects. I had only an old tablet
with me and they examined it without my presence, what made me feel *very*
uncomfortable. It was taken for few minutes only, but it was time enough
to make me feel insecure about data. Not mine, but my loved ones' data.
You can think I am a dramatic paranoid, but it was the reason why my last
travel had absolutely no electronics.

They destroyed my lock and *also* the suitcase. It was a pretty cute red
suitcase with a pink metal padlock and a big pink satin ribbon. They put
the broken padlock inside the suitcase, which was cut as half of the
ribbon. It was *not* a thief, who did this evil act was the people that
should protect us. :(

Sorry, I disagree. I can't share some bizarre stories I know because they
are private, but this one is mine.

My last travel to Argentina was a complete disaster. When I was leaving
the country, the police asked me twice "if I was completely sure that I was
not hiding anything with me".

I was submitted to a shameful and very detailed search in my body. The
police was hurting me, being brutal, and one of them put her hand between
my legs using a lot of strength, doing exactly what Trump likes to do with
"kittens". So I used my sweetest voice to inform her that my clit was
nearby, but a bit more to the left side and was pretty sensitive, and asked
to avoid being so rough, pleaseee. It was unexpected enough to make her
blush a lot and finally stopping to treat my body like an object, aff...
Savage! Well, when I arrived in Sao Paulo and saw my suitcase, I cried a
lot. It was completely destroyed and they had stolen even the alfajores,
the dulce de leche and other candies that I had bought to my family.

I bought a chip and a cell in Buenos Aires for some private calls and
destroyed it before going to the airport. I had no electronics with me,
only few clothes and some Argentine candies. No drugs, no animals, no
plants, no alcohol, no anything.

Hi, Carolyn! How are you, my dear? Sorry, only read your message now! :P

Please, don't feel upset or annoyed. I swear that was not a moderation

Every person is so unique... This fact always fascinates me. It's deeply
beautiful. This is the reason why I really detested so much the Muslim
ban, dear. Different people, different situations, different backgrounds,
different lives, different beliefs, hopes and dreams... It's pretty unfair
to judge all the persons the same way.

Every life is important. I respect all the human lives and I respect your
President's life and legal rights, and I swear I *always* will respect
them, but I do NOT respect his prejudiced beliefs, his disgusting acts and
hateful thoughts and speeches against women, LGBT people, black people,
Mexicans, Muslims, journalists, judges... Sorry, I can NOT respect him
because he does NOT respect people.

Sorry if my personal convictions hurt or annoy you. If you wish to
discuss this subject and my personal convictions in private, *please* feel
completely free to contact me. You can express your feelings and
impressions with no fear. Please, another personal observation, you don't
need to be a "passive list member". If you want more news about technology
here, you can share and/or ask for more interesting news and discuss their
effects in the society, or make questions, and so go on... The most
beautiful thing about communities is sharing knowledge, always learning,
always teaching. People are always fascinating, Santo-chan! ;)

Oh, sorry for mixing your last name and "chan", but "san" would be pretty
formal and you could feel a bit 'rejected'. :P I mentioned your last name
because I am still trying to discover which kanjis were used to write it.
When I read your last name, I thought it was a variation of a pretty usual
Portuguese/Brazilian last name, 'Santos'. It means "Saints". You're
"Santo", so you are only one "Saint", hihi... ;)

Please, don't feel annoyed or angry about the Lib Tech list. See, to make
you smile and minimize the stress, I will tell you a silly thought. Last
week, I wrote to my mom telling her I was considering to move to Japan and
already had chosen my future home! :D

I think your President would appreciate the Japanese Cat Islands a lot
because he loves p... little cats! He loves kittens like me, hahaha!!
OK, sorry, no more provocations or bad jokes! I won't tell to this list

ASILOMAR AI PRINCIPLES

Artificial intelligence has already provided beneficial tools that are used
every day by people around the world. Its continued development, guided by
the following principles, will offer amazing opportunities to help and
empower people in the decades and centuries ahead.
Research Issues

1) *Research Goal:* The goal of AI research should be to create not
undirected intelligence, but beneficial intelligence.

2) *Research Funding:* Investments in AI should be accompanied by funding
for research on ensuring its beneficial use, including thorny questions in
computer science, economics, law, ethics, and social studies, such as:

   - How can we make future AI systems highly robust, so that they do what
we want without malfunctioning or getting hacked?
   - How can we grow our prosperity through automation while maintaining
   people’s resources and purpose?
   - How can we update our legal systems to be more fair and efficient, to
keep pace with AI, and to manage the risks associated with AI?
   - What set of values should AI be aligned with, and what legal and
   ethical status should it have?

3) *Science-Policy Link:* There should be constructive and healthy exchange
between AI researchers and policy-makers.

4) *Research Culture:* A culture of cooperation, trust, and transparency
should be fostered among researchers and developers of AI.

5) *Race Avoidance:* Teams developing AI systems should actively cooperate
to avoid corner-cutting on safety standards.
Ethics and Values

6) *Safety:* AI systems should be safe and secure throughout their
operational lifetime, and verifiably so where applicable and feasible.

7) *Failure Transparency:* If an AI system causes harm, it should be
possible to ascertain why.

8) *Judicial Transparency:* Any involvement by an autonomous system in
judicial decision-making should provide a satisfactory explanation
auditable by a competent human authority.

9) *Responsibility:* Designers and builders of advanced AI systems are
stakeholders in the moral implications of their use, misuse, and actions,
with a responsibility and opportunity to shape those implications.

10) *Value Alignment:* Highly autonomous AI systems should be designed so
that their goals and behaviors can be assured to align with human values
throughout their operation.

11) *Human Values:* AI systems should be designed and operated so as to be
compatible with ideals of human dignity, rights, freedoms, and cultural
diversity.

12) *Personal Privacy:* People should have the right to access, manage and
control the data they generate, given AI systems’ power to analyze and
utilize that data.

13) *Liberty and Privacy:* The application of AI to personal data must not
unreasonably curtail people’s real or perceived liberty.

14) *Shared Benefit:* AI technologies should benefit and empower as many
people as possible.

15) *Shared Prosperity:* The economic prosperity created by AI should be
shared broadly, to benefit all of humanity.

16) *Human Control:* Humans should choose how and whether to delegate
decisions to AI systems, to accomplish human-chosen objectives.

17) *Non-subversion:* The power conferred by control of highly advanced AI
systems should respect and improve, rather than subvert, the social and
civic processes on which the health of society depends.

18) *AI Arms Race:* An arms race in lethal autonomous weapons should be
avoided.
Longer-term Issues

19) *Capability Caution:* There being no consensus, we should avoid strong
assumptions regarding upper limits on future AI capabilities.

20) *Importance:* Advanced AI could represent a profound change in the
history of life on Earth, and should be planned for and managed with
commensurate care and resources.

21) *Risks:* Risks posed by AI systems, especially catastrophic or
existential risks, must be subject to planning and mitigation efforts
commensurate with their expected impact.

22) *Recursive Self-Improvement:* AI systems designed to recursively
self-improve or self-replicate in a manner that could lead to rapidly
increasing quality or quantity must be subject to strict safety and control
measures.

23) *Common Good:* Superintelligence should only be developed in the
service of widely shared ethical ideals, and for the benefit of all
humanity rather than one state or organization.

are North-Americans and the man that I love more than my own life is a
German living in the USA with a green card.

IMHO, political discussions are *not* polution, considering the fact that
some of the tech resources here discussed are being created and implemented
specifically to protect the civil society and political activism, including
serious investigative journalism. We have the right of knowing the real
truth, instead fake news and conspiracy theories, several times created by
our own governments.

All the people in the whole world are deeply worried. We are not being
"noisy" or "inconvenient just for fun". Sorry, I have funnier things to do
in my free time, but it's impossible to be insensitive, completely
indifferent, and ignore what is happening with other human beings in this
moment.

It's a personal traum, but part of my family was killed in a nuclear
explosion some years ago. The part of my family who survived to war knowed
very intimately hunger, prejudices against race, religion, origins, and
even against our language. Japanese families had to hide their books to
avoid being arrested. Japanese books were burned in several countries.
The same happened with German and Italian families, and is still happening
with so many other families around the world... African families, Syrian
families, Mexican families, Venezuelan families...

Sorry, always hurts a lot to imagine the same happening with other
families. People moving to another country hoping, searching desperately a
better future for their children and suffering intolerance and all kind of
prejudices. The History never changes, but it should be different. Not
with "Alternative Facts", but definitely changing the world. That's the
reason why *we need to hack the world*. We can build a better future, a
fairer and more beautiful world using technology.

[liberationtech] Fwd: UK Jobs And Collaboration: Local Data Lab + Curious Fact About White House Petitions

2017-01-27 Thread Cecilia Tanaka
Hi, dear all! :D

I think it can be interesting for some of us. In this era of "alternative
facts" (Lieees, cof cof!), the world does need more investigative
journalism than ever.

A fool real example. Yesterday, just for fun and to give support to a
Dutch friend, I signed this jocose petition for the White House using their
own plataform:

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/america-first-make
-netherlands-second-because-they-requested-it

https://youtu.be/j-xxis7hDOE

I was, theoretically, the second person to sign it and I shared the
petition with the Brazilian Hackerspaces General List, because it was a fun
bonus in a public message inviting all the hackerspaces to celebrate
the International Open Hackerspace Day 2017 together.

My signature is NOT there. My friends' signatures are NOT there. I tried
to sign the petition 4 (four) times since yesterday night, giving some
hours between a try and another, and my signature is still NOT there.

It's a White House petition and I already signed some of these before.
Usually, there is no time lapse and the signature is counted immediately.
Will they need more than 13 hours to process it now? Will my signature be
in this petition someday? :-/

I know, it was a joke among hackerspaces, but first of all, it was a public
petition and we do have the right of asking to "Netherlands be Second" and
the White House can NOT censure us this way. They did NOT remove the
petition until now, so if the petition is there, what is the point about
obstructing our support to it?

I do really think Trump is pretty afraid Netherlands becomes First (watch
the video to understand the reference), but I am afraid they try to block
signatures in more relevant petitions about important subjects, like
censure, freedom of expression, privacy and human rights in general.

Tender kisses and hugs. Take care all of you! <3

Ceci, a Brazilian fan of Netherlands... You know, their walls are much
better, hahaha!! ;D

Call for paper:/CS Journal of Media Performing Arts and Cultural Studies./
Special issue 3/2017 “The Remaking of Truth in the Digital Age” edited by
Chiara Giaccardi and Nathan Jurgenson

The deadline for abstract submission is: January 31st 2017

*The Special Issue *

Many thought Brexit would not come to pass, that Donald Trump could not be
elected, experts, pollsters, and probability models told us so, down to the
decimal point. An entire media apparatus that was increasingly certain came
to produce instead confusion. The manufactured character of news becomes
dramatically exposed, as well as the entertainment-driven nature of
electoral politics that increasingly look like reality shows. The vacuum
left behind is threatened to be filled with the rising tide of hate speech,
hoaxes, and so-called fake news.

We introduce this project amidst this wave of anti-inclusionary and
counter-informative forces. Populist movements around the globe are
rallying against journalists, politicians, and other professionals and
experts who themselves have failed to speak to and about the lives of these
people. We are said to now be in a “post truth” time, one where debate over
truth has been replaced by a chaos of facts, where the work of building
knowledge feels exhausting and impossible, leading to a normalization of
the surreal, the uncritical acceptance of heavily biased information as
intuitive and unproblematic.

This issue is about our moment of epistemic chaos, the decline of old
knowledge gatekeepers, and the political ramifications of fake, misleading,
and propagandistic information. We pay special attention to the role of
new, digital, social technologies of knowledge and their relationship with
politics. We cannot understand how and what people know without
understanding the set of information technologies in which we inhabit.

Those debates around the diminishing of traditional institutions being
disrupted away by the rising tide and quickening flow of digitality are
instructive, too, as institutions of epistemic authority, grapple with
staying useful and relevant today. This issue is a meta-discourse on
discourse in a time many have called “post truth.” What is it to do
theoretical work in a so-called post-truth world without falling in the
equally undesirable opposites of cynical functionalism (truth is merely
what works, comforted in what they already know, and preserving the status
quo) or a new positivism (paternalistic explainerism, where truth is a
matter of numbers, and those in power claim a false objectivity). What
might Foucault’s “parrhesia” mean today?

And, ontologically, the disagreement over the basic shape of thing in the
world might lead to useless possibilities like a radical constructivism
where reality is merely what we do with it or an essentialism where reality
can somehow be perfectly grasped using the right methodologies. If reality
is hard to grasp, its consequences are hard to miss: people suffer
injustice and tourture, strive to survive in impossibly harsh conditions,
and find ways of resilience and resistance. Suffering and death has a
concreteness that escapes any rhetorical strategy, a reminder of the limits
of the defeatism of simply claiming everything is fake or a simulation. Is
there room for a critical realism that recognizes that reality always
exceeds our capacity to grasp it? One that could suggest respect and care
over arrogance and exploitation?

These crucial questions have precedent. A decade ago, conversations about
the internet often centered on how truth and news and information more
generally will flow when people have access to consume so much more
information. And, only a little later, when so many more people can produce
such information. Those debates around the introductions of Wikipedia,
Google News, or Facebook Newsfeed are instructive today as we continue to
struggle with how to incentivize, create, and sort information in ways that
are accurate and just.

We should draw on the literature describing the history of political
performance and propaganda. Global strategies of political misinformation
and shaping information ecosystems to manufacture ideology and behavior
shape and are shaped by the information technologies of their times, and
these are lessons we need to draw from to understand our current moment. Is
the epistemic vertigo being felt a feature or a flaw, a momentary
readjustment or a new normal?

Describing our current situation should also draw on past thinking about
knowledge, politics, and technology. For instance, the debates about
positivism, the myth of the neutrality and objectivity of numbers and
science are instructive. From “big data” science to “data journalism”,
numbers play a large part in our contemporary data flows, from metric-based
incentives like clicks, shares, and followers to th

beautiful, wonderful to make something cool with your own hands.

I suggest all the "Make Collection". I've made children having lots of fun

[liberationtech] Fwd: Call for input to President's Commission on Enhancing Cybersecurity - bridging the trust gap between the IT community and the US government

2016-07-17 Thread Cecilia Tanaka
- - - Begin forwarded message - - -

Date: July 15, 2016 at 3:21:32 PM EDT
From: Herb Lin
To: "'David Farber (d...@farber.net)'" , ip
Subject: Call for input to President's Commission on Enhancing
Cybersecurity - bridging the trust gap between the IT community
   and the US government

Dear IPers -

You may know that President Obama has established a commission to
consider how to strengthen cybersecurity in both the public and
private sectors while protecting privacy, ensuring public safety and
economic and national security, fostering discovery and development
of new technical solutions, and bolstering partnerships between
Federal, State, and local government and the private sector in the
development, promotion, and use of cybersecurity technologies,
policies, and best practices. (See
https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2016/02/09/executive-order-commission-enhancing-national-cybersecurity
.)
I am one of the 12 designated commissioners.

Recognizing that trust is hard to build and easy to destroy (and a
variety of things have happened over the last 20 years have occurred
to do the latter), one issue that has come up is the enormous gap of
trust between the U.S. government and the information technology
(IT) community, from which many IPers are drawn. This rift is not
helpful to either side, and I'd like to solicit input from the IP
community about what you think the government can do or refrain from
doing to help bridge that gap.

It would be most helpful if you could three things in your response:

1 - Your best examples of things the government (and what part of the
US government) has done to alienate the IT community specifically.
(Or, at the very least, show how the examples you provide connect to

2 - Things that the U.S. government could realistically do in the
short and medium term (i.e., 0-10 year time frame) that would help
bridge the trust gap. If your answer is "Don't do dumb things!", it

Please send your responses to cencinp...@gmail.com. (I set up this
email address, but I'd like to keep the traffic separate from my
non-Commission work email.) I promise to read as many as I can
individually and share what I learn with the commission membership.

Also, feel free to circulate this call for input to anyone else you
feel would want to comment.

Thanks much

Herb
