[liberationtech] Martus phase-out

2018-05-25 Thread Collin Sullivan
[Cross-posting to a few lists, my apologies if you see this a couple times]

Dear LibTech,

As you know, Benetech first released Martus, our secure information platform,
in 2003. Back then encryption wasn’t part of the public vernacular and no one
expected to be able to post and protect their data in the cloud, whatever that
was. A lot has changed, and we’re encouraged that additional solutions, both
commercial and open source, exist today (canary:event?ts=548967605.00) where
once there were few options for human rights defenders and others supporting
vulnerable populations. In fact, we are finding that many of these alternatives
may serve various use cases and threat models better than Martus can.

With all of this, we wanted to announce directly to this list that we have
ceased development on the current Martus platform – please see this blog post
(https://benetech.org/martus-sunsets-human-rights-data-collection/) for more
information. We are continuing to serve our current users, and can provide
advice or support with data migration to a new platform, on a case by case
basis. Our objective is to remain as responsible and ethical as possible with
this transition; change is never easy but we hope to make this process as
smooth as we can.

We recognize that there are still many unanswered questions – what the future
looks like for human rights documentation, for one – and we cannot responsibly
answer them on our own. These issues involve and will affect a larger community
of human rights defenders, social justice technologists, and funders working in
this space.

As such we are hosting a series of conversations that identify, document, and
address the needs, ethical concerns, and possible solutions for human rights
documentation tools and services going forward. This will entail scheduled
monthly calls with peer organizations, Martus users (current and former),
funders, and other supporters over a period of six months, beginning in June.

If you’d like to participate in these upcoming calls, please let us know
directly - we’d love your feedback and input. If your interest is in providing
support or technical expertise, we’d be happy to hear from you
(mailto:mar...@benetech.org?subject=Martus%20sunset) as well.

Thank you for all of your continued help and encouragement over the years!

Sending very best wishes,
Collin

[liberationtech] Announcing Martus v5 and the brand new martus.org

2014-12-10 Thread Collin Sullivan
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Dear LibTech,

On this International Human Rights Day it is a distinct pleasure to
announce the release of Martus v5, the latest version of Benetech's
free/libre, open source, encrypted and distributed information
management system for human rights defenders, journalists, activists
and others. The release coincides with a full redesign of the Martus
website. Please have a look: https://www.martus.org/

In developing v5, we have focused heavily on improving usability and
the user experience. For years users and potential users have reported
that they found Martus to be difficult to learn and use, and not so
pleasant to look at (a well-meaning colleague once described the user
interface as rather soviet).

With this release we have designed an entirely new and modern UI, and
worked hard to make important features and actions both accessible and
intuitive. Our overarching goal for Martus v5 was to lower the
barriers that were keeping people from accessing Martus' strong
security features, and I'm very proud to say that I think we've taken
a major step in that direction.

You can read more about the release, including info on new features
and design, at Enrique's blog post, here:
http://benetech.org/2014/12/10/strong-open-and-usable-encryption-meet-the-next-generation-of-the-martus-project/

I welcome you to explore our new, simplified website and try out the
latest Martus release. We see this as an important step for us and our
users and partners, and welcome your feedback and that of your
partners and colleagues as we continue to work to improve our software
and service. Please send any thoughts and feedback to
mar...@benetech.org. We're very happy to answer any questions.

Our official announcement is below. Thanks very much for your support,
and we're looking forward to your feedback!

Cheers,
Collin

Today, International Human Rights Day, the Benetech Human Rights
Program is delighted to announce the release of version 5.0 of the
Martus app and the debut of the updated Martus Project website. With
these updates, Benetech is taking a leap towards improving the
usability of end-to-end, open source encryption and extending its
benefits to rights defenders, activists, journalists, citizen
reporters, and other organizations and individuals who rely on secure
data collection.

The Martus Project.
Strong Crypto Since 2003.

Follow the @MartusProject

Around the world, millions of courageous individuals and groups who
protect and advance human rights operate in the shadow of active
surveillance, state-sponsored harassment, organized crime violence,
and targeted computer espionage. Their digital security and physical
safety are closely linked, yet all too often they lack the resources
or know-how to secure themselves against digital threats.

Benetech established the Martus Project—which extends open, secure
information management technology—to address this gap. As
technologists, we see it as our duty to provide the growing community
involved in human rights documentation and data collection with secure
tools that protect their privacy and anonymity, and that empower them
to uphold their commitments to do no harm to the vulnerable
populations they work with. We believe that end-to-end encryption is
critical for their safety and success, but recognize that usability is
still a major barrier to its wide adoption.
Usability Is A Security Feature

As part of our continuous efforts to lower the barriers to strong,
digital security, we have made dramatic upgrades to Martus 5.0 that
bring an entirely new user experience. These include new look and
feel; auto-sync of record retrieval from the server; improved record
format; simple text search on main screen; Tor and Server on/off
buttons on main screen; increased template manager flexibility; and more.

We are very excited for this new phase of the Martus Project, but also
recognize that much remains to be done. We will continue to improve
the Martus desktop and mobile apps, and are moving ahead with new
projects to strengthen the security and safety of those involved in
data collection efforts.

This International Human Rights Day, celebrating the theme ** Human
Rights 365 and the idea that every day is a Human Rights Day, we

We (Benetech/Martus) submitted secureApp Generator: Secure mobile
apps for everyone, designed to offer easy, usable and strong
encryption to those interested in mobile data collection.

It will enable journalists, NGOs and individuals to easily create a
custom version of the write-only Mobile Martus documentation app.
Those creating the app will choose the settings (e.g. identify who
receives the reports from mobile app users; define which server will
be used; design the data collection/reporting template; define whether
the app will require Tor for sending; etc.) so that those using the
app will have to configure nothing--just install the app and begin
documenting. A human rights NGO or news publication could distribute
this app to their network of trusted reporters or field workers; an
organization might publish their custom app on their website or on
F-Droid and encourage anyone to download the app and securely send a
report to them.

[liberationtech] Announcing Mobile Martus v1.0

2013-10-02 Thread Collin Sullivan
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Dear LibTech,

Today Benetech is very pleased to announce the release of Mobile
Martus 1.0, a free, open source Android-based mobile documentation
application that prioritizes security.

You can read more here:
http://benetech.org/2013/10/02/introducing-mobile-martus-1-0/

Briefly, some of the app's most important characteristics are:

* It's write-only (no decryption key on the phone)
* Bulletins (records) and their attachments are always encrypted locally
* It works over Tor (Orbot!)
* After initial setup, it's easy to use.

You can find some more detail at the link above. I'm happy to answer
any questions, and we always welcome your feedback.

Cheers,
Collin

Re: [liberationtech] Help test the new Tor Browser!

2013-06-17 Thread Collin Sullivan
Looks great! Congratulations!

Minor things on OSX 10.7.5:

* Took considerably longer to connect to the Tor network using this browser
bundle than my previously-installed TorBrowser-2.3.25-5-osx-x86_64-en-US. I'm
on a slow network but 2.3.25 typically takes ~1 minute or less to establish a
connection here, while the new build took 5+ minutes on first launch. (Much
faster on 2nd launch, I guess the previously-collected directory information
had been cached?)

* Small inconveniences:
 * when connecting, splash screen is set to always-on-top, which was a bit
annoying when it was connecting for those 5+ minutes.
 * when using Mission Control feature on Mac, screen disappears and isn't
collected with other app windows.

 Hi,

I'm really excited to say that Tor Browser has had some really important
changes. Mike Perry has really outdone himself - from deterministic
builds that allow us to verify that he is honest to actually having
serious usability improvements. I really mean it - the new TBB is
actually awesome. It is blazing fast, it no longer has the sometimes
confusing Vidalia UI, it is now fast to start, it now has a really nice
splash screen, it has a setup wizard - you name it - nearly everything
that people found difficult has been removed, replaced or improved.
Hooray for Mike Perry and all that helped him!

 Here is Mike's email:

Here is the place to download it:

Please test it and please please tell us how we might improve it!

 All the best,
 Jacob

Sorry, to clarify: this is the splash screen while connecting, not the browser

[liberationtech] Moving Martus forward

2013-06-13 Thread Collin Sullivan
Dear LibTech,

Brief update from us here at Benetech: we're pretty excited about the direction
Martus is headed. We're working on all kinds of long-desired
functionalities--built-in Tor integration, mobile write-only, translations,
visualizations and onward. We've just released 4.2, with speed enhancements and
some security improvements (and, for those interested: Burmese font
compatibility!), and we're already working on 4.3. Have a look at what we're up
to at https://martus.org

And, what with all the exciting work to be done, we're looking for someone to
manage a major software and training project as we develop Martus' next
generation. You can read about the position here:
http://www.benetech.org/join_us/position_postings.shtml#hrppm

Please share that link around to anyone who seems a good fit or might be
interested. And as always, we invite your input on how to make Martus better.

Cheers,
Collin
