[liberationtech] Snakeoil and suspicious encryption services

Hey guys,

After The New York Times video suggesting a few questionable services to
encrypt email (see here:
http://www.nytimes.com/video/technology/personaltech/10003002385/easily-encrypt-your-email.html?smid=tw-nytimes)
I was wondering if it's time to make a list of not-so-good snakeoil
encryption services that have popped up after the Snowden revelations.

As a reporter, I have received pitches for around a dozen different
products, but wanted to ask you if you've seen any, and why you think
they might not be good. Here's a short list to get you started (I'm not
saying all these are terrible, we should look into them and figure out
why they might or might not be good):
- -Virtru (https://www.virtru.com/)
- -Shazzlemail (http://shazzlemail.com/)
- -Protonmail (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/protonmail)
- -InfoEncrypt (https://www.infoencrypt.com/)

Feel free to also highlight good sevices,

Cheers,

lfb

[liberationtech] uVirtus Linux, encrypted OS for Syria

2013-09-27 Thread Lorenzo Franceschi -Bicchierai
Dlshad Othman, a Syrian hacker and anti-Assad activist (you might remember
him for Stephan Faris' piece on the hackers of Damascus on Businessweek) is
launching uVirtus Linux today in DC (see event here:
https://www.uvirtus.org/?p=139).

uVIrtus Linux, according to the project's site (
https://www.uvirtus.org/?page_id=4) is a fully encrypted OS based on Debian
that has encryption tools preconfigured so that activist in Syria can use
it to avoid governemnt surveillance.

What do you guys think about this project? Reminds me a little bit of
FreedomBox (without the hardware).

Thoughts?

[liberationtech] Physical Hacks to Protect Privacy/Freedom

2013-07-01 Thread Lorenzo Franceschi Bicchierai
Hey guys,

A colleague and I are exploring the world of physical hacks to protect
privacy and freedom. For example, this is what we mean:

IR LEDs Overwhelm Surveillance cameras

Using makeup and hairstyles to overcome facial recognition apps

**

RFID-blocking wallets

Any other cool examples you can think of? I'd like to get as many examples
as possible, so I thought I'd ask here since you guys must know many more.

Thanks!

[liberationtech] Encipher.it

2013-06-18 Thread Lorenzo Franceschi Bicchierai
Have you guys seen this?

https://encipher.it/

I've searched through the archives but didn't see anything. I'm wondering
how safe this is.

It has received some small attention on the media before.

Thoughts?

[liberationtech] Secure and Cheap Provider in Sweden or Iceland?

2013-06-13 Thread Lorenzo Franceschi Bicchierai
Hey guys,

In lieu of the recent NSA leaks, I'm going to transfer my website to a new
provider in either Sweden or Iceland (because well, you never know).
Griffin Boyce suggested I use moln.is, do you guys have any other
suggestion? Any other kind of advice?

Thanks!
