Yes i think having a view that a user can select which disables the gutters and the 3d page edge effect would be a useful feature as i was going to suggest it for touch screen users. It would be easier to add appropriate documentation in the help. That said there is a button Reset in the Expert Configuration dialog in LibreOffice 4.4 (menu Tools Options LibreOffice Advanced). For instance, the awesome highlighting feature of clone formatting outperforms most competitors. Why don't start color cloning as well on double click? And having a clear feedback in the buttons in respect to the current selection should support users understanding too. On the other hand we need to design and develop for the user. So if she doesn't like the way LO works we need to adopt other workflows. When you start LibreOffice the left hand side (open file, template, writer document, etc.) isnt displayed properly initially. After opening and closing writer, the display updates and gets displayed right. It almost looks like a different icon set is being used. Note that the Open File and Templates icons have completely different outlines between the two screenshots. Tested on master commit a98d3240a2d44a428852fee1d8a622b0780d687e Steps to reproduce : 1.) From a command prompt, start LibreOffice ./soffice 2.) Start Writer Click on 'Writer Document', letting the window overlap the startup screen 3.) Close Writer Click on the bottom 'X' in the top right corner to close the document and close Writer. This returns you to the startup screen. [Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 33223] Sidebar: as container for toolbars, ability to add functions missing from Sidebar
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33223 --- Comment #11 from V Stuart Foote vstuart.fo...@utsa.edu --- (In reply to Jay Philips from comment #10) I believe that if the sidebar was completed to its full extent, there wouldnt be a need to customize it... No even when fully realized with defaults, the capability for users to modify the GUI as preferred is a fundamental feature contributing to enhanced UX, and is something that we already provide. For example on toolbars we provide Visible buttons and the Customize tool bar dialog. Also, any toolbar can be rotated from horizontal to vertical and docked as such. That flexibility in layout of the GUI (actions and arrangement) is what is not fully realized for the Sidebar. Providing efficient means to modify the fixed screen space of the Deck with customized content panels (either existing panels, or adding panels) would be as useful as current ability to manipulate toolbars. In fact, UNO API based macros could already extend the OpenOffice task pane, and now can address any panels of the the Sidebar Deck. We just have not made that obvious or efficient in the Sidebar GUI as it has been for toolbars. It is also not well documented. And, as suggested in this issue--ability for a user to efficiently add their own custom content panel(s) made up of button actions from various toolbars, or even of entire toolbars, is a reasonable for customizable GUI. Other needed customization features--e.g. bug 65351, bug 67230, bug 67770, bug 85905 etc. suggest there is a long way to go before potential of the Sidebar is reached. But for this all to be reliable, and for acceptable UX, we will also need to improve user profile backup and recovery. Currently customizations to Toolbars, and of any Sidebar layouts, are fragile and can not be reapplied when a user profile becomes corrupted and has to be reset. That mechanism for protection of profile (GUI layout and custom styles) is not yet implemented--issues of bug 52387, bug 64439--but would become even more important to the UX when both Toolbars and Sidebar panels are being more commonly customized. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Libreoffice-bugs mailing list Libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/libreoffice-bugs

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 87842] Writer zoom at page width, option to eliminate 3d page edge and gutter
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87842 --- Comment #13 from or...@orionkidder.org --- I appreciate you pointing out that workaround, Jay, but it doesn't quite solve the problem I have, which is that the gutter takes up space for no good reason. Turning it white would make it impossible to tell exactly where the edge of the page is. But to be clear, the argument that the gutter helps to define the page is a bit baffling because it's perfectly obvious where the edge is. You can see your desktop behind it, especially if your windows have shadows, like they do in OSX. So I don't know why someone keeps flipping this bug to solved. It feels like an aesthetic preference rather than a thing to be fixed, and in that case, why not just send a note up the chain to, someday, provide a no gutters option? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Libreoffice-bugs mailing list Libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/libreoffice-bugs

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 87842] Writer zoom at page width, option to eliminate 3d page edge and gutter
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87842 --- Comment #17 from or...@orionkidder.org --- Hi, Stuart. Yes, *I* have the problem. That's why I'm the one reporting it, right? Also, there are actually only three commenters in this thread (you, me, and Jay), so we're not really a representative sample one way or the other, as much as I wish I could claim to represent 66% of users. I *entirely* agree that it's a very low-priority tweak. I honestly thought I was doing my part, as someone who doesn't code, by making the suggestion. And yeah, I don't know how to code, so that's not something I can help with. Believe me, I'd love to be able to fix it myself and just offer a solution. What's frustrating is to just be told that's a bad idea without any real explanation as to why. Just saying other word processors do X (or shouldn't have done X) doesn't address the problem. If it's simply so low on the list of priorities that it's not worth talking about, I can accept that, but, all due respect, you didn't say that. The status was resolved and wontfix earlier today. It's been changed since then. [Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 33223] Sidebar: as container for toolbars, ability to add functions missing from Sidebar
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33223 --- Comment #12 from Jay Philips philip...@hotmail.com --- (In reply to V Stuart Foote from comment #11) No even when fully realized with defaults, the capability for users to modify the GUI as preferred is a fundamental feature contributing to enhanced UX, and is something that we already provide. I guess we will disagree on this point as i see the sidebar the same way i see a dialog box. It is built in a particular way that users cant modify. We can give them the option to no longer see a section, like we presently allow to no longer see a tab, but not with the rearrangement of elements within a section. For example on toolbars we provide Visible buttons and the Customize tool bar dialog. Also, any toolbar can be rotated from horizontal to vertical and docked as such. That flexibility in layout of the GUI (actions and arrangement) is what is not fully realized for the Sidebar. With toolbars, you have a simple structure of a row of buttons/controls, so in that scenario, providing the ability to customize it has benefits. But those benefits dont always work, e.g. make the formatting toolbar vertical in writer and you wont be able to use the non-button elements like the style drop down, font name drop down or font size drop down. And, as suggested in this issue--ability for a user to efficiently add their own custom content panel(s) made up of button actions from various toolbars, or even of entire toolbars, is a reasonable for customizable GUI. I guess this sounds reasonable, though i wonder about what kind of customization dialog would be appearing for them to implement this and whether they would be permitted to place those buttons wherever on the panel as they please. I dont really see the benefit of putting this in a panel when they could easily have it in a toolbar. I see panels as going beyond what a toolbar can handle, as you can add all the elements found in the dialogs into it. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. ___ Libreoffice-bugs mailing list Libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/libreoffice-bugs
