It seems this is fixed in the 6.3 branch. Just tested with:

Version: 6.3.0.0.beta1
Build ID: a187af327633f5f00363be5131bd21a13e0f1a7b
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 4.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI-Language: en-US

It is still present in 6.2.4.2, but I am marking it as fixed (that's how it
works, right?)

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 125947] New: UI: "Spin Button" and "Scrollbar" are missing from default Form Controls toolbar

2019-06-15 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=125947

Bug ID: 125947
Summary: UI: "Spin Button" and "Scrollbar" are missing from
default Form Controls toolbar
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 6.3.0.0.alpha1+
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: medium
 Component: Calc
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: stephane.guil...@member.fsf.org

Description:
For some reason, "Spin Button" and "Scrollbar" are not shown by default in the
Form Controls toolbar in LO Calc 6.3.
They seem to be common controls (at least, more common than others), so I can't
see why they would have been removed from the default toolbar between 6.2 and
6.3. I assume it's an error that happened when it was reorganised (i.e. there
isn't a separate "More controls" section like there was in 6.2).

Steps to Reproduce:
1. In top menu: "View > Toolbars > Form Controls"

Actual Results:
"Spin Button" and "Scrollbar" items are missing (but can be added back if
wanted)

Expected Results:
Those two common controls should be shown by default, there is not reason to
hide those two over all the other controls.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Hi Raal

I can still confirm the same behaviour in both 6.2 and 6.3:

Version: 6.2.4.2
Build ID: 1:6.2.4-0ubuntu0.18.04.1~lo1
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 4.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI-Language: en-GB
Calc: threaded

Version: 6.3.0.0.alpha1
Build ID: 547edd20e527fb02900f6174973770d26306e2e7
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 4.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI-Language: en-US
Calc: threaded

Interestingly, the toolbars in 6.3 don't show "Spin Button" or "Scrollbar"
anymore. (Which means you have to use the "Insert > Form Control" dropdown menu
to add them.)

IIUC fonts do specify metrics for the NPC and spacing and Harfbuzz will use
exactly that spacing for layout.

It is only when using fonts with no coverage of the NPC and space Unicode that
either os fallback or spacing for an undefined glyph is assigned.

We'd nned specifics of which font you are having issue with--and which Unicode
spacing.

Perhaps a sample document, save to one of the flat ODF document formats.

And again, why should this be maintained in core? It is very much a corner case
multi-paragraph usage requiring considerable dev effort to spec the rules (and
by which style manual), implement it, and then support going forward.

Seems more reasonable in extension.

When minimizing it the window size changes to really tiny square around 12px.

Regarding starting as maximized I don't see it as an issue because the window
size will be preserved for the next start. User will only have to change it
once and most people don't have large screens.

Two reasons:

1) Closing quotes work correctly, so I would also expect opening quotes to work
correctly.

2) If I turn off smart quotes, then it becomes an enormous manual effort to
later go back and correct literally thousands of straight quotes to proper
opening and closing quotes.

I hope this answers your question. If I am missing something here, please let
me know.

Thanks.

Any reason you don't just turn off the Auto single and double font replacement,
and then manually adjust the quotes for the typographic style you need?

Don't expect complex typographic style/CSL to be implemented in core LO
functions.

Tools -> AutoCorrect -> AutoCorrect Options: Localized Options tab.

Dear CZEpersi,

To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today,
LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed
bugs which have not been touched for over a year.

There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this
bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the
details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in
getting confirmation that the bug is still present.

If you have time, please do the following:

Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice
from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/

If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the information
from Help - About LibreOffice.

If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to
RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help
- About LibreOffice.

Please DO NOT

Update the version field
Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker)
Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular
meaning that is not
appropriate in this case)

If you want to do more to help you can test to see if your issue is a
REGRESSION. To do so:
1. Download and install oldest version of LibreOffice (usually 3.3 unless your
bug pertains to a feature added after 3.3) from
http://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

2. Test your bug
3. Leave a comment with your results.
4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo';
4b. If the bug was not present in 3.3 - add 'regression' to keyword

Feel free to come ask questions or to say hello in our QA chat:

Dear Laurent Godard,

4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo';
4b. If the bug was not present in 3.3 - add 'regression' to keyword

Feel free to come ask questions or to say hello in our QA chat:
https://kiwiirc.com/nextclient/irc.freenode.net/#libreoffice-qa

Thank you for helping us make LibreOffice even better for everyone!

Warm Regards,
QA Team

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 125946] New: Opening Quoted Quotes Not Properly Rendered

2019-06-15 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=125946

Bug ID: 125946
Summary: Opening Quoted Quotes Not Properly Rendered
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 6.1.0.3 release
  Hardware: All
OS: Mac OS X (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: medium
 Component: Writer
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: jrk1231...@nym.hush.com

Created attachment 152223
  --> https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=152223=edit
Sample ODT file illustrating problem

Recap of writing convention (to explain why this is a problem):

When writing, and you are quoting a speaker, the convention is to enclose the
speaker's words in double quotes. If that speaker is quoting someone, then the
information the speaker is quoting is enclosed in single quotes (within the
speakers double quotes.

When a speaker's text continues for more than one paragraph, the convention is
to not put a closing double quote at the end of any paragraph, except for the
last paragraph being quoted; each continued paragraph is begun with an opening
double quote.

Similarly, when quoting a speaker's quote of someone else across paragraphs,
the convention is to not put a closing single quote at the end of any
paragraph, except for any last which also ends with the speakers quoted quote.
Such a paragraph would be ended with a closing single quote, followed by a
closing double quote.

When beginning a new paragraph which continues a speakers quotation of someone
else, the convention is to begin each continued paragraph with an opening
double quote, followed by an opening single quote.

(Technically, to improve readability, most times paired quotes are separated by
a thin or hair space. Too much space between paired quotes is what led me to
write bug 125945.)

Statement of bug:

The problem here is with beginning a new speaker's quotation of someone else.

In proportionally spaced fonts, typing double-quote single-quote produces an
opening-double-quote and a closing-single-quote. It should product an
opening-double-quote and an opening-single-quote.

Please see attachments for example.

Thin Spaces are not properly rendered in proportionally spaced fonts.

It is my experience that the thin space should be about half the width of a
space. This appears to be the case for mono-spaced fonts, but not for
proportional-spaced fonts.

Please see attached ODT and PDF files.

It might be a new thing caused by the updates to the libraries. Qt and freetype
had changes in the API and behavior. Debian Testing doesn't have them. It needs
to be tested in a distro with more recent packages. As I said in bug 125926
openSUSE Tumbleweed is a good candidate.

Sorry I cannot test the daily .deb/.rpm builts because of the reasons in Bug
125926 comment 5 .

> Anything specific that makes KDE5 VCL unusable? Are there already existing
> bug reports for this? A lot of things have been fixed for the development
> version and backported for 6.2.5 recently.

It is generally papercuts here and there.

* The UI generally feels slower than GTK. It takes 2 - 3 seconds to initialize
a new document after clicking New {Writer, Calc, Impress} document button.

* GTK version is still a lot slower than commercial software. Opening my old
internship report (.docx mandated style by University) with its huge PNG
diagrams takes seconds in GTK and scrolling to those pages is a nightmare; this
effect is 2 times worse in KDE5 VCL.

* Right click and the notebook bar context menus in 6.2.4 (the official distro
supplied package) are slow, highlighting and showing submenu happens after a
significant delay 1 - 2 seconds. It is like a milder version of bug 125927.

* UI is non-native and it shows here and there like bug 125926. The UI controls
like combo boxes are obviously non native. Clicking on them launches a sub
dialog like menu rendered in GTK. They behave really differently than other
Qt/KDE apps. My touchpad has horizontal scroll and unintentionally triggering
it causes non-native combobox dialogs scroll right and hide the labels inside
which is extremely annoying. That's why I also try Qt5 port. Unless LibreOffice
uses native Qt drawing and components it will always feel slightly out of
place. Thankfully KDE guys did a great job in Breeze GTK theme, it has the out
of place feeling of GTK but look-wise the results are really acceptable.

I don't write these to rant or blame somebody. You wanted specific details so I
put some examples of my experiences. I don't/can't use LibreOffice to do
serious work. However I use it now and then to create simple documents. If I
use KDE5 VCL it quickly turns into a fight between me and the UI. It gets in
the way. With GTK it is at least acceptable.

Also as a software developer I can understand that creating bug reports like
"LO is slow" will not solve anything. It is a decade long process to constant
refactor and optimization and as any libre software project LO lacks resources.
If I can get something concrete and worth reporting, I will. Otherwise it is up
to the developers and their taste and availability.

Alternatively, you could also download a debug build, which is provided in
simple archive format at
https://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master/Linux-rpm_deb-x86_64@86-TDF-dbg/
(larger download and runs slower, though).
It may well be that the result will be the same there, though, as with the
versions you already tested.

BTW This happens with Libreoffice 6.2.4 too. It is the official package in the
Arch repos.

Version: 6.2.4.2.0+
Build ID: 6.2.4-1
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.1; UI render: default; VCL: kde5;
Locale: en-GB (en_US.UTF-8); UI-Language: en-US
Calc: threaded

The screenshots are the same. Slightly bolder fonts in KDE5 VCL.

The version info:

Version: 6.3.0.0.beta1
Build ID: a187af327633f5f00363be5131bd21a13e0f1a7b
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.1; UI render: default; VCL: kde5;
Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI-Language: en-US
Calc: threaded

It is the AppImage.

My distro is Arch. It doesn't have rpm or dpkg and their utilities. I tried
downloading both .deb and .rpm versions of the latest build. .deb variant
doesn't have any installer scripts and since Arch doesn't have dpkg-deb I
cannot extract the packages. Maybe later I might write a script that extracts
using ar and tar.

For .rpm variant, It provides a script to install locally but it tries to run
rpm which Arch doesn't have either. I can get rpm2cpio utility from the
official packages and try the Step 3 but it results in weirdly named folders in
the screenshot.

Debian even testing have really old packages, especially KDE plasma which is a
very quickly moving target and others like Qt, freetype2 and fontconfig; all 3
of them had some important changes in recent releases.

In the meantime maybe somebody using openSUSE Tumbleweed may help. It is also a
rolling-release like Arch and uses rpm.

Nice. Thanks! :)

I wasn't even aware TDF provides AppImages as well. I quickly tried and
AppImage of 6.3.0.0.beta1 starts fine for me with both qt5 and kde5 for Cairo
rendering path.

Anything specific that makes KDE5 VCL unusable? Are there already existing bug
reports for this? A lot of things have been fixed for the development version
and backported for 6.2.5 recently.

I am aware of KDE5 and Cairo back-end. I am just testing out stuff to give
feedback and see how much improvement has been done.

The current beta1 AppImage outright crashes and shows crash report screen with
Cairo. I am uploading a screenshot for it also, since the crash screen also
have smaller fonts than standard Qt font.

The problem is that KDE5 VCL is not usable either. I use GTK 3 for stable use.
Heck, I would go back GTK2 for daily stability if it wasn't deprecated. It was
much more snappy than current GTK3 VCL and it could handle huge list of Noto
fonts and weird fonts better than GTK3.

Bug 125926 comment 4 describes where you can get current development versions.
Given Jan-Marek's comment 2 this is probably not AppImage-specific, though.
Please note that I used the kde5 VCL plugin for testing (which uses the Cairo
rendering path), while you seem to be using the experimental qt5 one (QPainter
rendering path).
[And please clarify in bug 125926 what exact version you're using there.]

Bug ID: 125944
Summary: Regression due to KDE5 VCL: calc shows formula
tooltips over the formula bar, making it impossible to
see what one is typing
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 6.2.0.3 release
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: medium
 Component: Calc
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: sergio.calleg...@gmail.com

Description:
Summary says it all. While the gtk3 VCL puts the tooltip under the formula bar,
the KDE5 VCL ends up positioning the tooltip right over the place where one
might be trying to type, edit a formula, completely hiding the formula.

The problem persist. However UI components like comboboxes got bigger. I'll
upload a screenshot of that. Fonts are still small. Maybe AppImage specific? I
cannot compile LibreOffice since it takes forever. If you have binaries that
compiled with up to date system libraries (at least QT 5.12.3), I can test that
version.

Can you please
* paste the version information from "Help" -> "About LibreOffice"
* check what happens if you use a current daily build of Libreoffice from [1]

You can install that one in parallel as described at [2]. It'd be interesting
to know whether this also happens with that one. Might also be somehow related
to the fact that you're using an AppImage version of LibreOffice.
