Hi,

2013/2/25 Michael Stahl mst...@redhat.com:
that regression was only on master, not on libreoffice-4-0.

Indeed.

i rather suspect the performance problem was caused by the synchronous
word count that is now running async in 4.0.1 (thanks to mmeeks).

Thanks for the information and the fix! László

Hi Ray,

For your information, I have reported a LibO 4.0.0 regression with the
“Clear screen” Logo toolbar button, and fixed by Michael Stahl on
2012-02-18. Also slower selection/handling of drawing objects caused
by this bug, maybe this was the background of your problem, too. See
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/commit/?id=2eef912649d277e05203bc79c26f2be5b096a292
– SwXTextView::select(): unselect drawing objects at start...
... and not before selecting each object, which leaves only the last
object selected

Best regards, László

2013/2/22 r_ouellette ray.ouelle...@sympatico.ca:
I confirm that fluidity is back also on win32 version (winxp at the office),
 LO 4.0.1.1.

Just to clear the myth, bibisect is about testing master, so it's the
opposite: you can use for testing 3.6 vs 4.0, but (for the currently
published binary repo) it's not usable for 3.6.x vs 3.6.y.

So it's exactly what you can use. :-)

I'm using LO version 4.0.1.1 (Build ID:
2c0c17a6e4bee0ee28131ea4bdc47edc700d659) since more than 3 hours on the same
262 pages long Writer document and the problem seems solved! LO 64 bits
linux .deb version.

Fluidity is back (like 3.6.x versions). I'll do the same check on win32
version when available.

Do you intend to debug this yourself? Then the first step would be
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Bibisect to see what commit caused
this problem. If you have further questions regarding code pointers,
we're happy to help here.

Or, if you are not about to hack on this, report it to the bugzilla:

Just to add - even in this case, the Bibisect (see the link above) would
be much appreciated, and will greatly decrease the time to fix for this
bug. Bibisecting is easy, it is an equivalent of testing in several LO
versions, just with easy switching between them.

All the best,

Thank you Miklos and Jan for your suggestions.

I'm a power user of different office applications (like LO -- and OOo since
it's debut) but Im not a programmer.

Bibisect seems interesting but anyhow quite heavy to install, even in a
virtual machine... Maybe I'll give it a try.

The regression I observed appeared with 4.0 (I think the first one I tried
was a beta before RC1) and it was not present in 3.6.x series.

When I read bibisect use, they talk about a single digit version, 3.6
against 3.6.any and not 4.0 against 3.6... I don't want to install something
heavy for nothing :-(

4.0.1 is coming, I'll check with this version before going further...

Regression - LO Writer 4.0

2013-02-18 Thread r_ouellette
I'm using Writer since 2006 (it was then OpenOffice.org's version) for a
statistical document of 262 pages. You can see the result at
http://www.mels.gouv.qc.ca/sections/publications/index.asp?page=ficheid=67
http://www.mels.gouv.qc.ca/sections/publications/index.asp?page=ficheid=67
-- The document is in french only.

There are more than 150 tables, all created using Calc. Each table is copied
as GDI metafile in the Writer document. I intensively use styles in the
Writer document. The tables are copied in vectorial format because they can
be resized like I want in the writer document while preserving their
original appearance. There is also a triple font substitution to avoid
embedding ttf fonts in the pdf version (Arial Helvetica; Courier New
Courier; Times NewRoman Times) and Type1 fonts are used.

Up to version 3.6.x, Writer was fast and usable with close to 270 pages.
Since 4.0, I think a redraw algorithm was introduced that slowed Writer,
making it almost unusable. I must wait a too long time for each page to
redraw when I move inside the document.

Anyone else noticed this behavior?

By the way, even Calc has this redraw problem when you use the paintbrush to
apply a format from a cell to another: try to group a few cells together,
then copy the grouped cells format to another cell and the newly applied
format is not refresh immediately.
