Re: Minutes of the ESC call 2019-02-07 - disable popups

2019-02-08 Thread Justin Luth

* Pending Action Items:
+ disable popups for release-build only in 6.2/.3 (Justin L)
[ sent some code pointers ]

Since I'm not a release engineer, I don't have a way to test the changes
that I was asked to make. So I've instead created bug 123270 which a
qualified individual can take.

Hi Thorsten,

Don't we send the OS to the server? This should be implemented in the server,
not in LibreOffice itself...

 Hi Pedro,

I don't think that is possible - 3.6.x versions are already out there,
and we cannot retroactively add the feature.

Hi Thorsten, all

Thorsten Behrens wrote

Good point. Maybe it's worth adding the check for OS version in the 4.2
branch to start testing with XP? I know Windows 2000 shouldn't be used
anywhere by now but Windows XP still has nearly a 40% cut of the desktop
OS...

In any case the OS version check can still be added to the Installer if the
upgrade is not forced for 4.0.5 but for 4.0.6??? (or is this considered a
new feature and can only be added to 4.2?)

* 4.1.2 RC1
- first week of September

* QA update (Robinson)
+ increase in unconfirmed bugs
  - renewed QA team effort to stay on top there

+ Regressions in 4.2
  - some regressions found in 4.2pre, need to encourage more tech
savvy users to test pre-release builds
  - Cloph: new style download page has pre-release builds
selectable
  - Robinson: use the online update to indicate there are new
pre-release builds
  - Norbert: don't publicize nightly master builds too widely
  - Thorsten: possibly pick some master builds before official
alphas, to get early feedback on new features

better to project needs
  - have direct admin access, timely responses
  - rename the version field label to better match our usage

not yet finished, it will take more weeks to complete...
when I started the review 62 MABs were present, actually the count is at
49.

+ MAB handling:
  * by next major release, merge into single list

do you mean that when 4.2.0 is out, all the 4.0 and 4.1 and 4.2 MABs will
be merged?

do you think about a single 4.x MAB page and then a 5.x MAB?

  * instead of individual mails, get daily MAB digest (Bjoern)
  * every 4-5 months, cleanse older, not-so-critical unfixed bugs
from MAB list

I agree.

* Open 4.0 MAB
+ 14/138 13/137 12/137 12/135 12/134 12/133 12/132 16/132 14/130
16/129

13%
+
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/showdependencytree.cgi?id=54157hide_resolved=1

actully the open count for 4.0 MAB is 25 bugs, because of some 3.6 MABs
that I moved there.

why do you have a smaller number?

Thank you still! :)

The proposal was to have a single MAB list, with the bug version field
then indicating (as usual) the first version this was encountered.

actully the open count for 4.0 MAB is 25 bugs, because of some 3.6
 MABs that I moved there.
why do you have a smaller number?

Did not re-generate the stats before sending out the minutes, sorry.

Cheers,

do we expect to have old versions bugs table merged into a single one?

Although I was one of those who brought up these thoughts, I believe
it's not realistic to hope that an other 3.5 release with 2 or 3
additional bugfixes will bring significant benefit.
But I believe for 3.6 we should rethink our release policy. We should
not terminate work on a version 3.6 because most people loose interest
(because they are busy with next release 3.7), that leads to a situation
as we have with 3.5.7 that still 77 MAB are unfixed and nobody know why,
but because the version is ready.

Of course I know that it never will be possible to get really all Bugs
fixed, but selection what these remaining unfixed bugs should be done
by a founded decision and not by coincidence.

May be something like this can help to avoid surprises 8only a first
thought):

final release -4 is out:
---
QA does all possible efforts to sort out inappropriate MAB and and to
add all required info to those bug so that they are really ready for
fixing by developers.

final release -3 is out:

Remaining well prepared MAB will be deployed to developers similar to
the HardHack proceeding. (QA-calls, ESC-calls, ...)

final release -2 is out:

If developers recognize that it will not be possible to fix particular
bugs with acceptable costs and risk, they add them to a Wiki table
(prepared by QA) with a short statement concerning these problems.
That will allow additional efforts to get fixes somehow overcoming
these problems

final release -1 is out:

Same as before

Final is out

final discussion concerning remaining unfixed MAB, shift to next
version's MAB, if appropriate, or what ever else, even may be to do a
Final + 1 release because a solution to fix important remaining MAB
has been found.

Yes of course; we'd namespace those tags suitably :-)

I'd be unhappy with tags such as libreoffice-3.6.0.2-5, because that
could be the fifth packaging revision of libreoffice 3.6.0.2, for
_any_ distribution.

Generally, as a developer, I'd love that, because more familiar tools,
 etc.

For the release builds, we are not there yet, I am afraid.

But for development, it works reliably enough; meaning whenever I need
to implement something Windows-only, I do that on Linux via
cross-compiling. [Only from time to time, installation issues appear,
like the recent missing nss/nspr.]

All the best,

This one is related to the decision of Debian/Ubuntu maintainers to
disable LO's mozilla integration in their distro.
With mozilla disabled the mesage above is the expected behaviour.

It would probably be more clear to the user if the option would be
unavailable (not listed) or greyed out.

As always with open source you have more then one work around here:

 1. Compile LO yourself (...)

 3. If all above fail for your change your distribution.

Or use TDF's binaries instead of the distro ones.

With my Base developer hat on, I'd say we'd need to fix this MinGW MAB,
