[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 151557] New: Changing text direction when whole table is selected in a mixed alignment table changes text alignment
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151557 Bug ID: 151557 Summary: Changing text direction when whole table is selected in a mixed alignment table changes text alignment Product: LibreOffice Version: 7.4.2.3 release Hardware: All OS: Windows (All) Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: medium Component: Writer Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org Reporter: will.fried...@gmail.com Description: If a table has text in different cells with mixed alignments (e.g., the header row is center-aligned but the rest of the rows are left- or right-aligned), selecting the entire table to change the direction of the text from LTR to RTL or RTL to LTR changes the alignment of the center-aligned text to right- or left-aligned. This doesn't happen if the entire table is center-aligned. It also doesn't happen if only the cells with center-aligned text are selected and the text direction is changed; in that case, center-alignment is retained. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Create a 2x2 table, with Heading checked. 2. Type some text in the header row. 3. Select the entire table and change the text direction. Actual Results: The centered header row text becomes left- or right-aligned with the text direction change. Expected Results: The centered text should remain centered. If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice. https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=65017 --- Comment #28 from Maxim Monastirsky --- (In reply to Eyal Rozenberg from comment #27) > the Comment 20 > solution would resolve both this bug and bug 151553. It will resolve Bug 151553 only after Bug 141732 is also fixed, as otherwise the pdf code will just ignore our app preference. (Much like is happening now - the recent files list prefers a filter from the current app, but the pdf code just ignores it.) (There is also an alternative approach suggested in Bug 131926, to use the exact filter name, not just the app. But it comes with its own set of problems which will need to be resolved, as I commented there.) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151554 Bug ID: 151554 Summary: Draw/Impress PDF import messes up line justification Product: LibreOffice Version: 7.5.0.0 alpha0+ Master Hardware: All OS: All Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: medium Component: Draw Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org Reporter: eyalr...@gmx.com Created attachment 183069 --> https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=183069=edit PDF document to import for observing the bug When opening a (Writer-created) PDF document with justified text, in Draw, the the resulting draw objects are aligned to the left only - and sometimes exceed the page's text boundaries. Their horizontal positioning does not correspond to their position in the PDF. To reproduce, open the attached PDF file in Draw (not in Writer!) Expected result: The words in the imported document are placed identically, or near-identically, on the page as they are when viewing the PDF itself. Actual result: Text is aligned to the left only, and is not bounded within the same rectangle as in the PDF (i.e. does not respect the page margins), on some lines. A screenshot will be attached soon. Version: 7.5.0.0.alpha0+ / LibreOffice Community Build ID: a09c5c69e3b5fbf448cae1d6c476f39067e40023 CPU threads: 4; OS: Linux 5.19; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3 Locale: en-IL (en_IL); UI: en-US Note: This is a sibling of bug 151552, but for the Draw/Impress PDF import filter. The bugs are filed separately because the behavior is somewhat different: In Writer I don't see any text outside the text area, for the same document I checked with. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=65017 --- Comment #27 from Eyal Rozenberg --- Alexander, Maxim: May I rephrase the title of this bug so that it can cover both the original problem described, and the case of ignoring the user's last choice of module to open a document? i.e. what Maxim suggested as the solution in comment #20? At the moment, as phrased, my bug 151553 is not a dupe, but the Comment 20 solution would resolve both this bug and bug 151553. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 151552] PDF import into writer messes up line justification
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151552 --- Comment #4 from Eyal Rozenberg --- (In reply to V Stuart Foote from comment #3) > Why is this a bug? I believe you're being facetious here, but: A PDF imported into Writer should (ignoring complex and esoteric PDF features) be rendered near-identically to its rendering in a PDF viewer. Or phrased otherwise: Printing the PDF and printing the Writer-imported PDF onto paper should result in almost-identical printed documents. If that seems too presumptuous, then at the very least that should hold for PDFs created by exporting Writer documents (ignoring complex and esoteric features). In particular, if words are spaced out within a line in the PDF, they should be spaced-out exactly, or almost-exactly the same way in the PDF-imported Writer document. > And I will restate the obvious LibreOffice is not a PDF editor! That is is obvious...ly wrong: LibreOffice is a PDF editor. Dictionary.com defines [1] editor as: "A program used for writing and revising code, data, or text" LO can open PDFs, make edits to the opened PDF, and save the result to a PDF. It's a poor PDF editor, but considering the lack of FOSS alternatives, and the fact that LO is installed so widely - it's the PDF editor of choice for many. If PDF import filters - in particular for Writer, but for Draw as well - would improve, LO could become a mediocre PDF editor. > The import filter results in draw Shape textboxes not LO paragraphs. That's an implementation detail. One could argue whether it's a good idea in general for a Writer import filter, but regardless - implementation details are not an excuse to mess up the import. > The > poppler based PDF import filter does not provide the spacings recorded into > PDF. So here's your bug. > We use it to convert the text runs held in PDF into draw Shape > objects--specifically textbox. The lack of "justified" filter import is > expected and by design. It's not what users expect, and if it was by design - the bug is in the design of the import filter. > We have pretty much the same result to canvas with the poppler based Impress > filter. Actually, that's not true, and I'll open a bug about the Draw filter separately; but the difference is not a good one... > If you need layout fidelity to the original PDF page, use the Insert PDF > filter! I need both layout fidelity and editability, and that's what the import filter should provide. [Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 151553] In File | Recent, user's choice of file type/input filter does is ignored
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151553 --- Comment #4 from V Stuart Foote --- Hmm, exactly the issue of bug 65017, *and* it multiple dupes. File -> Recently Used: a file opened in some module uses the Document Service for the module with focus, and not the module that the recent had been opened with. Enhancement is to record the last module used into the MRU history (that controls the MRU file list, and thumbnails on the SC when visible). I'll let you restore this to duplicate. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 151537] Open dialog filetype/import filter listbox inappropriate due to large number of formats
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151537 Eyal Rozenberg changed: What|Removed |Added OS|All |Linux (All) --- Comment #4 from Eyal Rozenberg --- I should also mention that, with GTK3, one cannot even navigate the list by typing the prefix of the desired item. (In reply to V Stuart Foote from comment #3) > For Windows os/DE the default "All files (*.*)" lists the filters and they > can be scrolled. And os/DE provided search is limited to "first character". Possible; I should have marked this bug as Linux-specific, and now I have. > The list is organized, I disagree. Or rather, it can't really be organized, as users's expectations of order will differ, or probably be not well-enough defined. > grouped by LO module, No,, they aren't grouped by LO module. But I'm not complaining about that. > with separators supplied for visual que. No separators - see the screenshot. But that's not what I'm complaining about. > Absence of scrollbar or ability to search is an os/DE issue. Perhaps, but - that doesn't matter. That is, LO needs to provide the user with a usable file open dialog, and a non-scrollable list box for dozens and dozens file types / import filters is extremely inconvenient. The OS/DE may not consider this to be a bug, since it may be making the assumption that the list is not very long - expecting apps not to have as many options, or to use additional controls to narrow the list down etc. And the fact that two difference VCLs have the same issues strengthens the possibility that this is the assumption. That's why this can't simply be dismissed as NOTOURBUG. We should first consider whether we should use additional filtering controls in the file open dialog (which are available IIANM); and we should also contact the authors of GTK and KDE Frameworks respectively about this issue. > We now provide our filter list and a small set of filter controls. Doing > more would require too much native code and offer no real benefit. Which small set of filter controls? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 151552] PDF import into writer messes up line justification
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151552 V Stuart Foote changed: What|Removed |Added CC||vstuart.fo...@utsa.edu --- Comment #3 from V Stuart Foote --- Why is this a bug? And I will restate the obvious LibreOffice is not a PDF editor! The import filter results in draw Shape textboxes not LO paragraphs. The poppler based PDF import filter does not provide the spacings recorded into PDF. We use it to convert the text runs held in PDF into draw Shape objects--specifically textbox. The lack of "justified" filter import is expected and by design. We ignore any spacing in parsing out the text. We have pretty much the same result to canvas with the poppler based Impress filter. The filters (there are two separate but similar) only provides a workflow to extract text runs (varying fidelity by script) and to merge them into one draw Shape textbox (the 'Consolidate text' action). And from there select the text stream to use if needed in a new LibreOffice paragraph object. If you need layout fidelity to the original PDF page, use the Insert PDF filter! Otherwise accept the tool for what it provides--an ability to extract text runs from PDF. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

This bug is about a different scenario; and, in fact - here we actually see the opposite behavior than bug 65017: If you open a PDF via File | Recent in Writer, the document will be opened in Draw - not in the current module. [Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 151550] Default file type for a given file should persist for repeated open's
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151550 --- Comment #1 from V Stuart Foote --- We quickly bump up against the "Document Service" handling that each module utilizes. What's defined is the default handler for each module. Simply put, using something undefined by typedetection [1] requires the filter listing--or of navigating focus into a difference LO module you'd like to use. Maxim was thinking of a tweak to document history so reopening from our MRU recorded to user profile would make a specific module assignment, see bug 65017 and guess that is still valid. Beyond that, the os/DE provided file manager or LibreOffice's own file dialogs, can not pre-filter the "All files" list or preload a filter from previous openings. Each is a unique instantiation and gets the full set of defaults. And, not clear there is sufficient use case to spend the dev effort on the native coude it would require. =-ref-= [1] https://opengrok.libreoffice.org/xref/core/filter/source/config/cache/typedetection.cxx -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

I will remind you that I'm one of the most active member of the RTL languages discussion channel over the past several years. And in this capacity I can tell you the reason Draw is mentioned in the dupes is not because people wanted to separate the bug for Draw and for Writer, but because of bug 141732, i.e. the fact that opening a PDF file from Writer (or from Impress for that matter) opens it in Draw. Nobody ever suggested to separate these two bugs and make this one Draw-only. The title does not limit it to draw; and the opening comment doesn't limit it to Draw. It is only with the potential prize of closing this long-standing and widely-followed bug that this suggestion was first made. I have no issue with tracking the Word part in a blocker bug, but RTL script text runs are still reversed on PDF import. Motivation: When you to force a different import filter than the one the app chooses for you, you will likely want to do the same whenever opening the file, at least unless it's changed fundamentally. Thus for example interpreting a text file as CSV content, or an HTML file as plain text. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

You > can't reduce the scope of this bug retroactively because you believe one of > the PDF import filters is not important. Don't believe I said that. And, as a routine QA matter we edit the BZ issues to keep them crisp. This TLDR; bug is now 92 comments long and the original issue(s) (see dupes) with the DRAW import filter is fixed. At comment 86 you highjacked the issue expanding scope to Writer. We knew the writer import filter needed the same rework, but this bug was already unwieldy and there will probably be substantive issues other than RTL handling (masking, font handling, transforms) for the Writer import filter. Accordingly opened a new clean issue for import filter work on the residual WRITER issues, including RTL, and that needs a clean and concise BZ issue to track. CLOSING THIS AGAIN => FIXED Please don't reopen. @Xisco? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

The only exception seems to be the ability to select a section's contents via the Navigator. However, I believe we should be able to do more, from one of: 1. A pop-up/context menu for a section 1.1 For its contents 1.2 For its boundary (the gray frame(s) drawn around it) 2. The navigator entry for the section And that relevant actions should include some of: * Deleting the section (along with its contents) * Hiding/collapsing the section * Merging the section into the containing section * Renaming the section * Setting different default styles for the section (perhaps that should merit a separate bug report though) * Merging the sections containing the selected text into a new single section of the common ancestor of these sections -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104597 Eyal Rozenberg changed: What|Removed |Added Status|RESOLVED|NEW Resolution|FIXED |--- --- Comment #92 from Eyal Rozenberg --- (In reply to V Stuart Foote from comment #89) > Wrong tool for the job! Right too for the job. > The PDF Import filter was designed to extract all > the presentation elements of a PDF as *Draw shape objects*--onto the Draw > canvas. There are different import filters for Draw and for Writer. The project - correctly- decided to support opening PDFs in Writer - which means editing the opened PDFs in Writer, as Writer documents. If you believe that should be dropped, please open a separate bug and we can argue about it there. > You should not expect directly "edit" the PDF text runs as laid down as draw > Shape textboxes as if they were text strings. They are a facsimile of the > original PDF publishing--not intended to be editable. I should, and I do. But regardless - I expect the PDF import filters not to reverse text runs, which is what this bug is about. > And of course using the ... neglected, > PDF Import to Writer > filter and placing thousand of draw shapes onto a Writer document canvas, it > is going to bog things down. The neglect is indeed a separate issue, as is the excessive use of draw shapes. > To what end? The result of PDF import is not editable text! Completely disagree, but again - you're sneaking in an argument here about wanting to drop the Writer PDF import filter. That's inappropriate. > As an alternative, perhaps explore the very functional PDF "Insert as image" > filter. Can we find that in the list of import filters right now? > Going to close this Resolved Fixed again. No, it's not fixed: RTL text runs are still reversed on PDF import.
