You did not give steps to create the document in Word 2016, so it is impossible
for us to do. Closing as insufficientdata.

Re: vested interest - yes, to the extent that I am a user of the software.. I
hope you don't expect that I get paid to do this.

Well, I probably could. However, you now have pretty much the same information
that I have, so it is just a matter of who is to attempt the tiresome and
time-consuming business of trial and error to recreate the trail that leads
"scientifically" as you put it, to the error.

But here our paths separate. I tried to get LO5 to work for me; it failed on
this item (and there may be others); I will move on, having attempted as best I
can to describe my problem so that it can be solved.

You presumably have a vested interest in solving problems like this and doing
the excellent work that makes products like LO5 available. I admire this effort
and appreciate it, but am committed to other work and will move on.

If there's further _information_ that I can provide, let me know. But no, I
don't wish to try to recreate this document.

Ok. Would it be possible for you to recreate the problematic document from
scratch in Word 2016?

We need to be able to scientifically reproduce the problem :)

The original document was Word 2016. But I opened it in LO5 and then saved it
in LO5 and re-opened it in Word to make sure that I could return to Word if
necessary. I would have thought this pretty standard testing of a new product.

I believe that I then went on and attempted to redefine the styles in the
default template. I seem to remember that couldn't find a default (Word's
equivalent of 'normal.dotx) so I created a new template and may have based a
new (this?) document on that template. However, from my remarks above it seems
as though the current template is not one that I recognize. It is also
possible, from this recollection, that I started a new LO5 document with a
revised template and pasted the original text from the Word 2016 document and
then saved it.

Sorry, but in the flurry of experiments that one does when testing out new
software, I don't follow a rigid path or indeed one that I can even remember.

Oops! Some errors in my previous comment (would be nice to have access to
previous comments while adding a new one) that I wanted to correct but couldn't
figure out how to edit them.

I described the problem as occurring with headings where I should have said
that the problem was with text-body.

So is the document you attached the original document from Word 2016 or did you
modify and save it from LibreOffice?

I do see the problem, but it is vital to know the origin.

First, thanks for your attention to this. Noted that you had to change the
status after my last visit to "UNCONFIRMED". Not sure why this happened as I
thought I'd changed that.

To respond to your questions. No, the document was created in Word 2016, and I
was trying to recreate my styles in the LibreOffice document went things went
awry.

But I'm not sure what your comment is saying. Are you saying that you cannot
reproduce my observed problem when you open this document? To perhaps repeat:
my difficulty is that some headings seem to be negatively indented--hanging
1/4" to the left of the page/text margin. And I cannot seem to correct this
because the style (cleared, deleted, added again, changed to "normal", etc,
etc) says that there is no indent! By every means of reckoning, the style
specification asserts that the heading text is already lined up with no hanging
line or indent.

I'm afraid that I have now abandoned LibreOffice and moved that document back
to Word (where it gave me a similar problem but I think I corrected it there).
In short I'm afraid I've moved on.

I'm disappointed. I am quite frankly amazed at the quality of LibreOffice and
very disappointed that it didn't work out. But stumbling this early on a
difficulty that proved to be so stubborn is something I don't want to deal with
at this point. Good luck with it. Will check back in a year or so.

Will leave the status as is.

JBW: how did you create this document? In LibreOffice? Can you give us steps
that lead to this effect reliably?

I tried inspecting the styles.xml and document.xml inside the .docx, but didn't
discover the problem (.docxes are just .zip files).

Set to NEEDINFO.
Change back to UNCONFIRMED after you have provided the information.

Simple document with 2 paragraphs showing problem

Am hoping that this is not solved by some simple format feature that I'm not
aware of. I'm simply approaching this as I would in a Word document.
