If you need the same list style, but different coloring or fonts, you need to
create additional list styles, they will then be available for reuse in the
current document.

As you found, if you modify the list style it will propagate to all instances
of the list.

And, if you need to reuse the layout in additional documents, first work up the
additional styles and then save it as a ODF template file.  Open the template
for each new document--the additional list styles will be available to apply as
needed.

This can be a bit confusing. But there is good documentation. The Byfield text
