Press:

- View > Field Names (Ctrl+F9).

This will change the display of "Page number" into your actual page numbers.

You can also press:

- View > Field Shadings (Ctrl+F8)

to enable/disable the gray highlight. This lets you know that "this is a
field". Auto-generated:

- Footnotes
- Page numbers
- Cross-references
- [...]

are all considered "Fields".
