In the context of a document, an object refers to a self-contained entity
within the document that can be manipulated as a unit. An object can take many
different forms depending on the type of document and the software used to
create or manipulate it.

For example, in a word processing document, an object might be a table, an
image, a chart, or a text box. In a presentation document, an object might be a
slide, a shape, an image, or a text box. In a PDF document, an object might be
a page, a form field, or an annotation.

Objects can be manipulated in various ways depending on the software being
used. For example, in a word processing document, you might move an image or
resize a table. In a presentation document, you might change the color of a
shape or add an animation to a slide. In a PDF document, you might fill out a
form field or add a comment to a page.

Overall, objects provide a way to organize and manipulate different elements
within a document, making it easier to work with and customize the document to
your needs.

Good input Olivier.

Would a "table" be an object (i.e., non-text, but not anchored)?

Shapes/Textboxes are objects, but sometimes it seems like they have limitations
or characteristics that other objects (frames, graphics, OLE objects) do not
have. => if "help" refers to "objects", then have to be sure that the
description applies to all "objects".

Is another defining feature "drag and drop"? (maybe just an alternative or
elaboration to "anchored")

My 2c:

+ An object is an element/component/part of a document and not a
screen-exclusive element

+ An object is a non-text element, although it can represent text.

+ Object are anchored in the document (have anchor)
