So I would suggest a fresh profile, complete uninstall of LibreOffice, and an
install of 4.3 http://libreoffice.org/download

See if you can reproduce with a clean profile with 4.3

Awesome! Setting as WORKSFORME as 4.2 is EOL (or quickly approaching it).

Using 4.3 seems to have solved the problem. Thanks.

It would not let me rename, since the file was locked. I closed the file
(unable to save changes) and renamed the user profile. Now I have lost my
changes. Will test again with more frequent saves to see if it works.

I can't send you the actual file that was causing the problem, since I can't
save it!

Please don't change the status to ASSIGNED, this must be done for the developer
taking the bug to solve it. Revert to UNCONFIRMED, the best way to get
attention, if not was set up as NEW for someone.

Are you saving in a network driver?
Please when opening the file, try first with a single click on the file without
open, and wait a bit (about three second) before double click for open.

OK - I changed the status to Unconfirmed.

I'm saving to a drive on my own computer. BTW, I've been using the same
process on Libre Office documents (not spreadsheets) and am having no problems.
When I've finished my updates I email them to the team. I suspect the others
are all using Microsoft Office, but don't know for sure.

I opened the file again by clicking on its name in the Libre Office Recent
Files, and after the first update Libre Office crashed when I saved the file.
I attempted to recover and got the message:

The file '$(ARG1)' is corrupt and therefore cannot be opened. LibreOffice can
try to repair the file.

The corruption could be the result of document manipulation or of structural
document damage due to data transmission.

We recommend that you do not trust the content of the repaired document.
Execution of macros is disabled for this document.

Should LibreOffice repair the file?

Any other suggestions?

OK - that message was misleading - it refers to another spreadsheet I had open.
Is it possible that my Libre Office installation is corrupted? I can
reinstall, if so.

The recovery worked OK for the file I'm updating.

Hello Alan Jenkin,
Thank you for reporting the bug.

I can't reproduce the issue:
Win7x64
Version: 4.2.6.3 Build ID: 3fd416d4c6db7d3204c17ce57a1d70f6e531ee21

Please, to be certain the reported issue is not related to corruption in the
user profile, could you rename this LibreOffice user directory ( see
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile#Default_location or
http://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/903/where-are-the-libreoffice-data-profile-files/
) and re-test?
