They are not default visible—you have to click them—and they can’t be printed, either on paper or a PDF. This doesn’t require a complete redesign. Comments become all but unusable with normal use (i.e. lots of comments per page). One idea is to make it pop-up like in Calc (bug 101714) and of course we could start with less lines and an option to show/hide authorship. I would do the latter per checkbox indented under Comments at Tools > Options > Writer > View. And quick access to this option in the context menu at the comments maybe too.
