Hey Alex,
I got an email reminder about the bug and wanted to add this update.
This will probably be my last comment on this.

Since I first reported this bug, what I've noticed over time on both my 2008
Mac Pro and my 2010 Mac Mini is that LibreOffice only "beach-balls" and crashes
when I try to SAVE my document to a folder with a lot of files in it. But, when
clicking SAVE, if it opens an empty folder OR I am able to select a folder with
10 files or less, I never have a problem. I have only experienced this CRASH
WHEN TRYING TO SAVE MY DOCUMENT issue with LibreOffice (since version 5). I
haven't had this problem with any other software on my Mac.

Yes, my Macs are relatively old and I'm running Yosemite, but all my other
software saves to any folder without issue. I hope you will at least pass this
on to the developers working on the new LibreOffice 6 for Mac. Other than this
annoyance, I really love LibreOffice.

Thanks for your help!

Happy New Year,
Roy

How large is large ? Is it a multiple GB collection of small files, or a multi
GB collection of a small number of large files ?

How is your Documents folder mounted into the main system ? Symlinks or
hardlinks or is the 4TB disk mounted over a network, and if so, via which
network protocol ?

This is a separate, and already known, issue. Please do not try to conflate it

Alex is just a user like all of us in quality assurance. So we are 100% your
peers and will test on whatever we happen to have available. Sometimes TDF
acquires hardware (or reallocates used hw) and sends it to testers or
developers.

I see you tested with version 5.3.2.2 and set it to the version field, but we
keep its value as the oldest version the bug is known to appear in, so I will
revert it.

Dear LibreOffice / Document Foundation,

I was originally told by Alex Thurgood, that my problem most likely wouldn't be
confirmed because he didn't have a 2008 Mac Pro running Yosemite. While I
understand that, ii kinda makes all the time I spent reporting this seem like a
waste. For future reference, it would be helpful to know what models and
software versions you DO test on.

Second, after extensive testing, I MAY have figured out WHAT is causing the
issue I continue to have. Please read on.

MY DOCUMENTS FOLDER
I have a fairly large DOCUMENTS folder. TEXTEDIT has no problem saving to it,
but LibreOffice cannot handle simply trying to open the DOCUMENTS folder when
choosing where to SAVE my document. This means that I had to go in to
PREFERENCES and change the SAVE PATH so it will not automatically try to open a
dialog window in the DOCUMENTS folder whenever I try to save a document. I do
not have this problem with LibreOffice on my Mac Mini (2010) running Yosemite,
but my DOCUMENTS folder on the Mac Mini is small. Just to be clear, LibreOffice
seems to be fine with every other folder I tried to save to. It will even save
to my other hard drives, but not the folder where documents are stored. Funny,
and yet not so funny. :)

ARRANGEMENT OF HARD DRIVES (most likely a non-issue)
I don't think this has anything to do with the problem, but wanted to be clear
that my Mac Pro is setup with an SSD drive for the system files and a 4TB
standard hard drive that contains my Mac Pro's HOME folder (Desktop, Documents,
Pictures, etc.)

LIBREOFFICE INSTALL VERIFICATION TAKES 15-30 MINUTES
Yes, you heard right — an insane amount of time! I'm pretty sure it did this on
both my Macs. This is when you first click on the file to launch LibreOffice
after downloading, mounting the DMG and dragging the app into APPLICATIONS.
This issue really needs addressing. Thankfully I let it keep "verifying" to see
what would happen after force quitting it several times, but 15-30 minutes is a
bit long.

I don't have any more time to write more, unless it's to help actually test
something. My wife and I LOVE LibreOffice and hope you will at least pass these
issues along to be at least looked at. Both my computers far exceed the system
requirements on the website, so if at all possible, my problem should be
addressed. If you have a fix of some kind to share with me, I would be
grateful.

Thanks to all of you for your hard work and excellent FREE software,

Hi Roy,

Well our bugzilla allows any interested person to be made aware of a bug
affecting LibreOffice if they decide to take an interest ;-) However, there are
no attributed Mac developers in the LibreOffice project per se - people just up
and volunteer to scratch their itch as and when they feel like it, and this is
particularly so for OSX problems, so there is no one in particular I could
forward this to.

I'm also unaware whether any of the people who do occasionally contribute to
solving some of the OSX specific problems are using the hardware you have. The
Apple crash report is a help, but unfortunately, we usually request gdb
debugging trace output, and that in turn requires a debug enabled build (with
symbols), and running LO in lldb to get a full backtrace. That's probably about
the only further thing I could ask of you at the moment : download a debug
enabled build from one of the current master OSX nightly builds (if you can
find one) and run it in lldb to get a full backtrace, and then save that
backtrace to a text file and upload it here. This would assume you know
something about debugging under OSX from the command line.

Alex, thanks for your fast reply. I know that you aren't responsible for
actually fixing bugs. I was only speaking generally and hoping that it can be
fixed.

YES, I have installed Java 6 on both machines.

Like I said, both machines have recently had a complete, bare-metal reinstall
of the OS (10.10) within the last 2 months. All my apps and drivers are also
up-to-date. I say that because, as you know, sometimes an older installation of
an OS can have quirky issues that build up over time, that a simple reinstall
will fix.

OPENING, EDITING and SAVING DOCUMENTS -- Often Works
My wife WAS able to get a few documents to save, IF she was OPENing documents
in LibreOffice Writer, rather than creating new ones. She specifically
remembered having success with TEMPLATES when she would OPEN, edit and SAVE
them.

Given that you don't have access to a 2008 Mac Pro, can you somehow put the
word out about this, or pass it along so that the developers can at least have
a look at it. They might realize what the problem is and I would be happy to
test a revision for them. YI'll also be happy to take this up with them if you
can give me an email contact.

You still have the diagnostic "crash" report I attached, right?

I know my computer is an older machine, but it's an 2.8Ghz, 8-core Mac Pro with
18GB of RAM. This machine has at least 3 more good years in it.

One more thing. In case it's helpful to you, both TextEdit and the latest
version of OpenOffice runs fine on the 2008 Mac Pro. But LibreOffice 5 is SO
much better than the latest version of OpenOffice. It actually feels like a
different program now.

I appreciate your help. Thanks for listening. Please let me know what you think
when you have a moment.

The only other thing I can think of is that your memory modules arrangement
might not be to LO's taste and something in the write operations on save
triggers a memory fault ? I see you have older 1Gb modules in that system along
with the 4Gb ones.

Does your syslog show any memory read/write faults at all (not just
LibreOffice, but generally) ? Clutching at straws I'm afraid.

Hey Alex,
Your last comment about RAM is a really interesting guess. I recently installed
some memory from RAMjet, but they test all their memory in Macs, and I THINK we
were having trouble before I installed it. My other memory sticks are from
Crucial and Apple.
I watched a video on how to install all of it and believe I did it correctly,
but I think your thought makes a lot of sense. Everything runs perfectly until
we click SAVE and then it all locks up. Whatever it is, that's when it happens,
so that could be it.

The only problem is that I really don't know what to do with that info.
Everything you said in regards to debugging is over my head. The only code I've
ever written was DOS Basic back in 1983 at computer camp. Yes, 1983. I love
computers, and would love to sit down and watch someone do that, but I'm not up
to tackling it on my own right now.

If you think of anything else I would be grateful to hear any ideas you might
have.
I think I saw your email address in the email I got. (yahoo.uk?) You have mine
and can comment here as well.

Thank you for your help,
Roy
