Looks like this has been fixed in 5.2 (at least the Sidebar doesn't close when
you select the menu item anymore).

IMHO better to have a check mark there to indicate that it's already open,
similar to what we do already for other UI elements (toolbars, statusbar,
non-modal windows etc.)
