Parsing XML is an extraordinarily slow process; while from a file-size
perspective there is little to no dis-advantage to inserting a huge number of
tab (or space) characters into the zipped streams, from a parsing perspective
there would be an impact here.

Possibly once we have got the ODF import to use the XFastParser, and ideally
tweaked the XFastParser to parse the compressed zip tokens [ we could make this
moot ;-]. But this is currently not work that is resourced.

Please read the discussion in bug 54812. I personally have not strong opinion
on it. I use "XML Notepad 2007" as editor, which works on the nodes, and
Notepad++ with the XML-plugin as plain text editor. So I'm not effected by this
setting.

The option is available in the advanced settings. It is item
org.openoffice.Office.Common > Save > Document > PrettyPrinting

Toggle its value to "true".
