Is it a change in the release engineering process, or just an oversight?

The reduced context menu appears when the image is anchored "as
character". In that case there is no text flow around the image to be
defined.

No I didn't play with that new feature.
I tried with a new clean profile and found the same behavior.

In fact it seems to depend on the kind of image. I have this reduced
context menu for the first image I tested and neglected to test some
other images. Now, with other images I see the normal context menu.
I will investigate to find what particularity of my first image triggers

Hi,

In the submenu Wrap of the right-click menu of an image in Writer, there
is only "Edit Contour...". In 5.1 we have several other entries.
Is this part of the simplification of menus or a bug?

I guess it is a bug because having only one entry in a submenu make the
submenu useless.

Please could you confirm?

I think you should open enhancement bug reports in TDF bugzilla and
attach ODF documents to them. A commenter can attach a new version and
it is easy to track the evolution of the proposal.

Having proposals on an external tool is a lost of autonomy for the
Community. We can't rely on Google for the continuity of your documents.

 * Pending Action Items:

 wrt. Calc sorting (JBF)

 First draft here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85490

So - I don't grok that bug; I was expecting a tracker bug; are you
trying to use 'see also' for that ? rather than 'depends on' ? the see
also is a zoo that doesn't solve the problem here I think.

I am trying to summarize the different use-cases I can find related to
sorting range of cells with references. Many things are not clear with
the collection of bugs you can find in bugzilla with the keyword sort.
For many bugs reported in BZ, it is not clear, for me, if the bug is
really in Calc or between the chair and the keyboard.
We are missing a clear description of all use-cases that Calc is able to
handle and, for each use-case, how Calc should do sorting. In other
words we are missing the specifications of sorting.

So I am working on a spreadsheet gathering the use-cases I am able to
describe. Each use-case has data, description, how to test, what is
expected and how it works in master, 4.3.4.0.0+, 4.2.6.3, 4.1.6.2 and
4.0.6.2. The spreadsheet is not finished yet but, at the moment, I have
at least 2 clear conclusions:

1/ the issue with the use-case bank account (bugs 81633 and 85215) is
fixed in 4.3.4.0.0+ and 4.4.0.0.alpha1, except for the fact that in 4.3
the legacy behavior is obtained with the default value of option
UpdateReferenceOnSort, when in 4.4 you have to change it to get back the
legacy behavior.

2/ with 4.3, it is not possible to make all tests of the spreadsheet
working, without changing the option, which implies that you need to
restart LO each time you need to change the value of the option. It is
not a user experience as good as we expect.

I hope to be able to attach the spreadsheet to the metabug shortly.

Best regards.

Not unless someone volunteers. FYI it would require a fair amount of
code change and a change in ODF file format.

Is it not possible to have a checkbox in the sorting dialog without
saving its state to the file or not in the file but in the registry ?

Indeed, but in some particular cases, rounding errors may have
disastrous effects.
For example, again on MOD() function:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80732

Rounding errors are acceptable if they remain (very) small. If they are
not, something should be done.

Another very clear case is the following:
- type 0.1 in A1
- in A2 type =A1*11-1
- propagate the formula to A30
Enjoy ;-)

This is indeed well known and Kohei has explained why it happens (quite
a few times). The logic is beyond my comprehension but I trust his
judgment 110% and he has said it is really unfixable. I believe we have
closed at least 5 similar bugs in the past year.

Yes, I share the judgment of Kohei and Markus that the rounding errors
problem can't be solved for all computations without losing performance.
Infinite precision is too expensive.
Current behavior is not problematic if we keep rounding errors small. It
is not always the case and we should try to avoid the cases where
rounding errors gives final errors that are not small. That is the
challenge of Numerical Analysis, finding correct results with false
computations. ;-)

In comment #2 of https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80732 I
showed that it is possible to make better computations of MOD() and
QUOTIENT() functions. At least in the cases reported here.

There is the same problem for previous 4.1.x release pages. I will fix

maybe make it so we only close a bug completely once it's been RESOLVED

someone to actually change it back if they want to.

 Thoughts?

I think QA team should use VERIFIED / FIXED to confirm that a bug is
fixed because RESOLVED / FIXED is often set automatically.

And bugs in verified / fixed state could be closed automatically after
some time (2 months for example) without change.

Actually that is not true. If you print to PDF or to paper and give that to
someone convinced that it is the same as what is on your screen, there is in
 fact data loss.

I disagree, printing a spreadsheet with computations on decimal numbers,
produces always a data loss because numbers are rounded. But you do not
loss any data in your spreadsheet, only on the paper. Printing acts as a
filter, it keeps some data and leaves out some others. You must manage that.

My fear was, if we use lo#12345 or libo#12345, that when somebody tell

upgrade to a new version (or go talk to their vendor/distro/paid tech
 support)

What do you mean by users inquiring about tech support ?

Who is we here ? I think that subscribers of users mailing lists do
what they want and answer the questions they want.

The user list does not provide tech support, though ;). This is about people
complaining about bugs not getting a bugfix in an ancient and unsupported
version of LibreOffice. If someone is using LibreOffice 3.5.x and reports a
bug, it will not get fixed on 3.5 unless he has a support contractor of some
kind that is able to provide him with a custom build. Note that this is
invincible in principle as TDF will not release any further versions of 3.5.x.
I think its good to make reporters aware of that.

Ok, I see. Is there many requests in bugzilla asking for a backport of
some fix to an old unsupported version?
French public administration has the problem with LO 3.5.7 which is
solved by paid support.

AGREED: We de-list versions in Bugzilla 6 months after the release has
 been EOLed

I do not see any rationale for that.
What I suggest is to remove all RC and beta version from BugZilla as
soon as the corresponding final version has been published.

Hmm, sounds like a good idea too. If someone triages it even further (e.g. a
bug was not there in 3.6.2 rc1 but is in the final version), a comment in the
bug might suffice. While the info is highly valuable to a developer trying to
fix the bug (in which case a reading of comments happens anyway), it is not
something we can query bugzilla for esp. since the version we set in bugzilla
is the earliest _known_ version to have the bug. So a bug reported against
3.6.2 rc1 can just as well have already been there in 3.6.1 final.

Yes, and if a user is able to install LO and to decide the version he
want to use, he should install the final release and try again before
reporting a bug against an old RC.
And if a user has not the power to decide the version to use, then his
sysadmin must install only final versions and this user doesn't need to
report bugs against RC.

That being said, I expect most regressions in a minor update (4.0.2-4.0.3) to
be in the RC1 already, and most regressions in a major update (4.0.x-4.1.x)
 to
be in the beta already anyway.

You know, we have users who work with LO 3.3.x and others who plan to
upgrade to LO 3.5.7 at the end of this year ... They don't decide for
 themselves.

Well, they are running unsupported versions of LibreOffice. For these reports
to be interesting for the LibreOffice project at least the following has to be
true: The bug has to be reproducable in a supported version of LibreOffice.

Yes indeed. And with my hat of end-user helper, if the bug is not
reproducible in current release, I can use it as an argument to suggest
upgrading.

Note that the reduction of the numbers of versions to select from is valuable
in itself. I find myself being annoyed by scrolling through that long list in
 a
small box, and imagine it is even more irritating to e.g. a first time bug
 reporter.

I agree. In my fdo configuration, or in BSA, I see the newest version
number first in the dropdown list. It isn't the default case?

That said, I guess we can remove the rc number for stable release and
show 4.0.2 instead of 4.0.2.2. I think the rc digit is confusing for
endusers and useful only at development stage.

Best regards.

[Libreoffice-qa] LO 3.6.2 : about Manage dialog from Conditional Formatting

2012-09-25 Thread Jean-Baptiste Faure
Hi all,

Now, the bottleneck fdo#54498 has been fixed for LO 3.6.2, it is a great
step toward making LO 3.6 usable for production !

So I think it's time for developers to consider the severe UX issue we
have with the Edit dialog from manage screen in Format - Conditional
Formatting - Manage.
The problem has been described in fdo#54774, fdo#54940, and on QA and
UX-advise mailing-list. We had very few answers and only one developer
(Markus) point of view. So I decided to ask on developers ML as it is a
developer problem.

To make the story short, I think it is crucial to make the Edit dialog
from Format CF Manage Button Edit to work exactly in the same way
as Format CF CF, regardless the constraints from using relative
references.
My main argument is here :
http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/libreoffice-qa/2012-September/002653.html

This Manage dialog is very important as it gives a summary of all CF
defined in the current sheet. It is a long waited function for all
peoples who are using CF in their spreadsheets. So a big thank you to
Markus for that. But now it is important to not give a bad user
experience with this new great function.

If nothing is possible, I think the better thing to do is to remove the
button Edit from the Manage dialog.

Best regards.
JBF, irritating QA people.

Too expensive, perhaps, but not possible, I can't believe it. ;-)

I think this question may be the cause of a strong misunderstanding from
end-users.
So it is important to resolve the problem.

Sorry I do not understand what you mean by ref-input dialog.
Even if it would be easily possible I still
think that it is never a good idea to manipulate anything when you are
calling a modal dialog. Furthermore as I tried to explain in the bug
report it is a good thing that the dialog shows the relative reference
from the current position but I explained it already in the bug
 report.
And what happen if the end-user does not understand that and modifies
the formula in the edit subdialog ?

In your test document the current cell being C13, the edit subdialog
shows a formula which speak about D14. You will be lucky if the user
remember which was selected when he opened this menu.
When the end-user will see that he will understand that his CF has been
destroyed in some way and he will correct it in _this_ dialog.
When he will return in the menu Format Conditional Formatting, he will
see something else again. In your test case the formula becomes
ISNUMBER(B#REF!) and is still working! Now the end user has destroyed
himself his data.

Best regards.

it seems that Impress in LO 3.5.0 crashes under *MS-Windows* in
slideshow mode when you try to show a slide with a linked movie (menu
Insert - Movie and Sound...).

No problem for me under Ubuntu.

Can you confirm ? Sorry, no time today to check bugzilla.

The wrong libobasis-dev3.5-core01 was not empty. It included the Latvian
Dictionary. There was a typo that caused that the dictionary was not
associated with the Latvian langpack and was put into the default core01
module. It started to work here with the above fix ;-)

 Super: I can install
 master~2011-11-27_23.13.36_LibO-Dev_OOO350m1_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz
+ the langpack just in the 'old fashioned parallel' way.
 All runs fine.

Yesterday, I installed same version + FR langpack + FR helppack on a x86
PC without problem. All runs fine too for me.
