[Libreoffice-qa] Feedback page up

2013-12-23 Thread Robinson Tryon
Hi all,

The first draft of the Feedback page is now up on the QA site. Big
thanks to cloph for massaging the code into a Silverstripe-friendly
format:
http://qa.libreoffice.org/feedback/

The page uses the HTML vars passed-in by LibreOffice:
https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/bug/?LOversion=4.2.0.1LOlocale=en-USLOmodule=TextDocument

When we update the BSA to accept passed-in variables, this will allow
us to automatically fill-in a bunch of information about the bug
reporter's system. In the future, we could include additional
information such as OS, architecture, and extensions.

Sophie - Please let us know if you run into any hurdles testing-out
localization of the page. If you have any other notes/info about how
to localize a page (esp. based on information passed-in via HTML
vars), please document that info on the wiki and link to it from here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Silverstripe

Please play around with the page and give us some feedback, folks!

Right now the 'Give Feedback' link in the program just goes to the
BSA, so IMHO think that any (halfway decent) feedback page would be an
improvement over just a link to the bugtracker.

Sophie is taking the lead on the l10n aspects of the feedback page. I
think that addition l10n support should be pretty straightforward, but
I'm quite happy to have some additional help. Because the feedback
page is server-side, we can add translations to the website as they
are completed by the individual language teams.

 Did you ask for
 comments in ux-advice?

Not yet! [ux-advise list cc'd now :-]

Hiya UX peeps:

Here's the mockup, if people want to take a gander:
http://testing.eagleeyet.net/~qubit/www-feedback/

Here's the code:
https://github.com/colonelqubit/www-feedback

Yes, it needs a little love (especially some padding -- those
sentences look so unhappy crammed in to those tiny boxes!). Just send
me a pull request and I'll review and merge.

How about changing the three primary sign posts to

 + ASK a QUESTION
+ REPORT a BUG / file an enhancement request
(combine the two as both go to bugzilla/BSA)

I like the idea of having two separate 'sign posts' for Bug and
Enhancement, because I think that most people see them differently.
This also will help us to get enhancements tagged properly as such,
which reduces work for QA.

(Which is the primary reason I'm pushing this project forward: To get
bugs, enhancement request, and questions filed in the right tool)

Yes, both 'Bug' and 'Enhancement' buttons will (currently) redirect to
the same BSA page, but in the future I hope that we can give a
customized bug reporting experience that will be slightly different
for bugs and for enhancements.

+ GET IN CONTACT with the community / Contribute
   (with Links to mailing lists/IRC/whatever...)

I think that some kind of Join the Community sign post would be a
great addition. I think it should take a more background role, as it's
not exactly a type of feedback and probably won't address the feedback
that most site visitors want to leave for us, but I definitely think
it should be there.

I think we need to offer our users more opportunities to join the
community. As an example, I'd love for us to offer some options to bug
reporters after they're finished reporting a bug:
* Have another bug or question for us? (take them back to the feedback page)
* Got some programming chops? Want to take a crack at fixing this bug
yourself? (link to Dev get-started page)
* File a bug, Confirm a bug: If you help us confirm another bug in our
system, we'll be able to fix your bug even faster! (link to some
fisher-price instructions on how to find/triage/confirm a bug in
Bugzilla)

I'd like to keep the 'Give (general) Feedback' sign post on the list
for two reasons
1) Some people just like to say 'thanks' to us, and there's no way to
do that right now (or give any other general feedback)

2) It gives people a separate place to rant (and might keep some of
the fluff out of our bugtracker and Ask site)

[Libreoffice-qa] Feedback page

2013-11-15 Thread Robinson Tryon
We've had some great discussion/planning on IRC today, so I want to
sum-up what we've said and make some notes for the future:

- We like the idea of a feedback page
- Put it in Silverstripe
- Suggested URL: https://libreoffice.org/feedback
- Joel is going to get us a mailing list (EN) for feedback
- Localize it - Sophie will help coordinate l10n teams
- First draft: http://testing.eagleeyet.net/~qubit/www-feedback/

Feedback form or mailto: link? Why not both?:
http://ux.stackexchange.com/questions/6959/contact-form-or-mailto-link

The general plan is:

The 'Give Feedback' link in the program will take you to the feedback
page (instead of the BSA). If a 'locale' variable is passed-in, the
feedback page will provide a localized version (if available), but
we'll have some kind of language-picker on the side of the page for
users to select.

By default, the Ask, Bug/Enhancement, and Send (Email) Feedback links
will note that they are English-only. Any l10n team that provides
language-specific versions of these services (e.g. the FR-BSA) may
file a request to have the feedback page offer the l10n service
instead of the English default.

Anything else I'm missing?

Yes (but maybe I am the only one, who is missing this info ... ;) ).
How do you want to show users the existing feedback (on your draft
there is the text Want to see other people's feedback first? below
the header Give feedback, which links to

not be on the same page (libreoffice.org/feedback)? Maybe some kind
of ... Hm, JS/frame which opens, when you click on the link. But I
am not sure, if this is doable in SilverStripe at all ... :( But
this feedback should be anonymized then ... ;)
Thank you for your sum-up

Done! Well, with the first draft, anyhow:
 http://testing.eagleeyet.net/~qubit/www-feedback/

 Code is available here:
 https://github.com/colonelqubit/www-feedback

Big kudos to Astron for the mockup code.

Thanks for this work!

 What works:
 - Link to Ask LibreOffice
 - Link to BSA (including passing-along URL params from LibreOffice)
 - Link to BSA for enhancements (including passing in enhancement=yes)

 What doesn't work:
 - Submitting feedback via the form
 - Viewing feedback submitted by other users

 Minor TODOs:
 - Some icons need to be updated
 - Clean up the layout I hacked into place

also there should be the ability to localize it (link and page) because
some of us do not use 'Ask', but lists or other forum, and most of us
will want it in its own language (it's part of the quality of our product ;)
What will be behind LibO made me happy/sad? and who will deal with the
results of this feedback?

Kind regards
Sophie

Well done!

Still, if there is a requirement for registration the wall is still there...
I would be interested in seeing statistics of number of people who click on
the buttons and actual registration and bug report...

Again I suggest that providing a valid email should be enough to contact
back if needed.

Excellent question!
If it's a fire and forget thing as bfoman said
(http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Libreoffice-qa-Where-should-users-report-bugs-tp4081505p4081544.html)
then it could be more damaging than good for the relationship with the
community/users...
Otherwise, someone will have to actually read it :)
Personally I think it's good to have such a tool (in the Mozilla version
there is an optional field for email contact) but does LO/TDF have the
manpower?

Regards,
Pedro

Big kudos to Astron for the mockup code.

A big thank you to you both :)

 What works:
 - Link to Ask LibreOffice
 - Link to BSA (including passing-along URL params from
LibreOffice) - Link to BSA for enhancements (including passing in
 enhancement=yes)

Just a question: The text below Create a bug report reads
quote
Having a specific problem, like a software crash or a missing
feature? Report a bug to our developers.
/quote
But is this not redundant to the File an enhancement request, if
you mention a missing feature here? Would it not be better to just
write
quote
Having a specific problem, like a software crash or LibreOffice
freezes, when you try to open a file? Report a bug to our
developers.
/quote
or something like that? And than enhancing the text below File an
enhancement request to
quote
Missing a feature or thinking of a new feature that would make
LibreOffice even better than it is today? Let us know!
/quote
?

 What doesn't work:
 - Submitting feedback via the form
 - Viewing feedback submitted by other users

That would be cool to see as well :) But I have no idea, how you
will handle this in our existing LO infrastructure. Are you thinking
of some kind of form2mail interface or would it become a page, where
all this feedback will be collected? And if so: Who will have a look
at it? Devs or someone else?

Thank you for your work so far
Thomas
Rest snipped

The current plan with the Feedback page is to put it up somewhere
(perhaps alongside the BSA) and have the 'Send Feedback' link in
LibreOffice point to it instead of directly pointing at the BSA. If
there's an easy way for us to add localization support to the Feedback
page, I think we should consider it. We just need to make sure that we
keep localizations up to date (which I know can be a burden for some
of the smaller native-lang teams).

IIRC LibreOffice gives us a language code in the query string, so we
could do a quick check to see if a corresponding up-to-date
translation exists, and if not, fall-back to English.

The primary motivator for getting the Feedback page up and running is
to shunt user questions to the Ask site instead of having them end up
in Bugzilla. We'll see how well that works, and perhaps make some
tweaks to the system :-)

What will be behind LibO made me happy/sad? and who will deal with the
 results of this feedback?

IIRC, our latest plans was to hook this up to a 'feedback' mailing
list, manned by a number of intrepid souls who would sort through the
messages, pushing bugs/questions/etc.. towards the appropriate
websites. Any general feedback might be helpful to Marketing, UI, or
other Teams.

As I mentioned above, my primary goal here is to give users a choice
between the Ask site and Bugzilla, so I'd be fine to get rid of the
happy/sad feedback area if there's not much support for it.

There is a barrier, yes, but I think most people in the project are
happy to have that requirement.

the buttons and actual registration and bug report...

Sure -- maybe we can do something smart with Piwik or whatever website
stats tools we use..

Again I suggest that providing a valid email should be enough to contact
 back if needed.

Sure. It would be nice if a user could sign-up for an account and
submit a bug report all at the same time (we'd could just flag the bug
report until the sign-up was completed)

 Excellent question!

I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other about it. I'd be
fine if it was just a simple web form that would allow the user to
submit feedback.

Otherwise, someone will have to actually read it :)
Personally I think it's good to have such a tool (in the Mozilla version
there is an optional field for email contact) but does LO/TDF have the
 manpower?

I wonder how much traffic this form will create. Sure, we'll get some
SPAM, but how much total traffic do you think we'll get? I think it
would be very manageable.

Yep, yep. I think I'll mention sluggish behavior/perf bugs in general.

No firm plans here, as I mentioned in my reply to Sophie. We did have
interest in *some* kind of generalized feedback mechanism beyond
Please email info@tdf, so I'd say that's the primary reason why this
section of the Feedback page still exists :-). Interestingly, there's
no obvious Leave us feedback mechanism available here:
