[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 98374] New: Correct the list of disabled shortcut keys per OS

2016-03-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98374

Bug ID: 98374
Summary: Correct the list of disabled shortcut keys per OS
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 5.2.0.0.alpha0+ Master
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: medium
 Component: LibreOffice
  Assignee: libreoffice-b...@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: philip...@hotmail.com
CC: er...@redhat.com,
libreoffice-ux-advise@lists.freedesktop.org,
rb.hensc...@t-online.de
Blocks: 98259

When my question regarding why various shortcut keys were disabled in the
keyboard shortcuts customization dialog was forwarded to the developers mailing
list and i received replies from both Regina and Eike that some were disabled
due to accessibility and others were disabled due to Calc's default functions
(weird that disablement only happens on linux), i went through the HIGs for
Windows, Mac and Linux and concluded that most of these restrictions should be
removed and another set of restrictions need to be added per OS. Only if the OS
itself is blocking the use of a shortcut key, should LO not allow a user to
assign that shortcut key, else if a user wishes to change the key, there
shouldnt be any restrictions on it.

These are the commands that should likely be retained and we could make it
cross platform.

Alt + F4 - reserved on Windows
Ctrl + Alt + F4 - reserved on Linux

We could expand on these and based on HIG recommendations restrain users for
very important shortcuts like these.

Help - F1: Windows & Linux, Cmd + Shift + ?: Mac
Context Menu - Shift + F10: Windows & Linux (reserved on Mac)

All the research was can be found in this google doc.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Aek0chOK2h3bBUe1J0bObjbTSOgau_HMeMJ5ws-dM58/edit?usp=sharing

The LO code that does this restriction is here.

http://opengrok.libreoffice.org/xref/core/vcl/source/app/svapp.cxx#108

So step 1 would be to trim down the existing list and step 2 would be to add
entries not presently found in the list that should likely be disabled based on
each OS's HIG.

I guess i'd have to disagree, as extension imagine if each provider created
their own extension, what would the sidebar turn into. It is better that we
create the core functionality and let providers (most of which wouldnt spend
the time to create their own extension) create just the minimum needed
integration to enable their service to function within it. We are doing the
same thing with the GSoC project to revamp the gallery sidebar tab so that it
can search online providers like openclipart, which used to be its own
dedicated panel until the sidebar arrived.

--- Comment #4 from Yousuf (Jay) Philips ---
So i tried Gnumeric and Calligra Sheets and they have similar behaviours as
Calc and Excel.

Making the frames thicker inwards in the cells might be beneficial to make it
easier to distinguish the colors, but having a fill highlight inside the
selected cells would likely be better, similar to WPS.

@Eike: Is any of this possible?

how it looks in WPS/Kingsoft

With WPS, it uses a color fill highlight on the current selection that can be
modified, so you can easily see one the relevant one.

--- Comment #5 from Yousuf (Jay) Philips ---
So i tested other spreadsheet apps and Excel, WPS, Quattro Pro and Google Docs
kept it as text, while Calligra and Gnumeric changed it to a number.

I'd assume the best person to explain this behaviour and whether its a bug is a
Calc dev. @Eike: Any thoughts?

2016-03-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98362

Yeah but what do you mean by "treat like a number"??

If you type "1 ljsbf" you don't expect it to be transformed into "1", do you?
(it doesn't happen)

If you type "lsdls" you don't expect it to become "0", do you?
(it doesn't happen)

So why should "1+" become 1, and even more absurd, why should "1-" become -1?

In other words, Calc usually "assumes you are entering numbers" **unless** you
enter something that cannot be interpreted as a number.

In what notation is "1+" a representation of 1 as a number, and "1-" a
representation of -1 as a number?

Your argument is valid for an input like "1e2" (which one may enter with the
intention of entering text but is also 100 in exponential notation), but "1-"
is not a number in any way, I don't see how anybody could expect it to be
interpreted as -1.

To me this is a toss up whether we want that behavior or not.

Setting to ux-advice so they can decide if it's a bug.

FWI - you can get the desired behavior by just formatting the cell as text. The
algorithm assumes you're using calc for numbers (which is generally a decent
assumption) so if you only have 1- it's treating it like a number, different
users will have different expectations as to whether that assumption is right
or wrong. So, default behavior should be decided by UX crew.
