To see the hidden message, hover over the empty space; or resize the toolbar
and click the arrow to show the hidden widgets.
That message is there, even before doing any search.

[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 101179] Writer/Web: View > HTML Source mode toggles are awkward

I would also expect that HTML Source is an option when I load such a document.
But it is there only with Stefan's test sequence.

Is this really an UX thing? It smells like a bug, or an inconsistency at the
code.

Confirmed on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit with
Version: 5.2.0.3 (x64)
Build ID: 7dbd85f5a18cfeaf6801c594fc43a5edadc2df0c
CPU Threads: 8; OS Version: Windows 6.19; UI Render: GL;
Locale: en-US (en_US)

The mode toggles seem a little muddled. Unable to move back to Normal or Web
layout without first toggling out of HTML Source view.

So, it can be in HTML View--or not. And only if not, then either Normal (i.e.
print preview) or Web view.

Beleive intent is when toggled into the HTML view--the Normal and Web view
widgets were not visible--instead of just greyed out.

Not sure if that can be improved.

On pc Debian x86-64 with master sources updated today (+rendering gtk3 and
enable-dbgutil and English/US UI), when searching a non existing string, it
indeed displays "Search key not found".
If there's not enough space to display the whole message, I got only a part,
eg: "Search key not" with ">>" overlapping "not".
Remark: in this case clicking on ">>" gives nothing (no popup, no placeholder
message, etc.)

About changing the font for equations... perhaps in the Format-->Fonts menu
there could be an extra setting where 'Greek' symbol font and style
(bold/italic) could be selected? The strange 'iGreek' stuff could still sit
there in the background, but the font options for '%rho' etc would then become
sane and user-accessible. The default fonts would sit as settings in the local
LibreOffice install, but any new formula would remember its particular font
settings and font sizes so that the formula would stay the same if edited by
another user on another machine...

I checked MS Eq Ed 3 -- that's how they used to do it too
(https://people.richland.edu/james/misc/editor.pdf#page=3)

Another thing -- why are the Greek symbols even in the Symbol Catalog? Surely
we already know where they live...? I think that this Symbol Catalog was a Big
Stick that was used to address the Greek symbol thing, but it's overkill and
not elegant.

Hey Gulsah, yes still valid. So open Draw and draw a shape, and while its
selected, click it once more and you'll see the 4 corners of the shape change
from blue squares to red circles (aka rotation mode), and then moving the
corners will rotate the shape. It seems that this feature isnt activated in
impress either, which is strange.

Just like Stuart mentioned, rotation is a common action for shapes, which is
why in MSO has a rotation circle is always present on a shape when its
selected.

No, as noted at the top of that file, that file doesn't contain the greek
letters ('%alpha ... %gamma for example')

But this won't be portable... if I send my file to someone else, they'll see
the same broken OpenSymbol font again, right? Especially if they make any
changes to a formula. That would be rather puzzling for them, I think.

That doesn't sound right to me. When I use Liberation Serif, the %nu symbols in
the denominator all line up perfectly. When I use OpenSymbol, the denominator
is a a mess. So, even though I don't quite understand the point you're making
about baselines, you can look at my attached screenshot and see that the font
family *does* affect this. (I can repeat the test with the same symbol in two
different fonts, but I didn't want to be bothered battling the Symbol Catalog
again -- please let me know if I need to do that and I will)

As I look at it, there seems to be extra information associated with the
symbols in the Liberation Serif font, and the equation editor is making use of
that extra information and the symbols look great. If I guessed, I would say
that there is information about the capital 'X' height for the font, and even
though the %nu' is smaller than the the 'X', the smarter Liberation Serif leave
space, but the more stupid OpenSymbol has only got the size of the immediate
symbol at hand to deal with, so it doesn't know to leave more space.

Understood. The point is that the default setting is a bad default choice. I
can't think why anyone would want space like this around formulas. Neither for
in-line nor line-of-their-own nor "fn [F3]" numbered equations. My suspicion is
that the space was added as a workaround for some previous bug to do with
grabbing focus on objects with the mouse, or something like that.

That's right, the font replacement mechanism doesn't sound like a good option.
But I think the right option is to simply adopt a better symbol font than the
current default one (again, try the '%nu' thing above, so that you can see why
OpenSymbol is broken).

Thanks so much for your help and attention!

Agreed.

When I first encountered this toolbar, it was in relation to a bug reported
against the background colour not being graduated in the same way as the other
toolbars for OSX. I literally had no idea of what this was, or what it was
supposed to achieve.

At present, I fail to understand what useful purpose it might have, especially
seeing as the tag definitions do not appear to be editable nor their content
modifiable, or capable of being localised (I hope I am wrong with this last
one, else what a mess the toolbar will be for non US-English users). I assume
that there is a spec somewhere that defines the rationale behind it ? Apologies
to all for digressing from the bug report, but I'm trying to understand how
this came into being and what use-case it serves.
