Got it, reason is the expander that is hidden instead of being disabled. Does
not happen in Writer. Should be fixed.

I suspect the control to be configured in svx/source/xoutdev/xattr.cxx where
the components are created depending on the selection. Touching this means to
change everything so I'm against a modification here. In particular since the
reason to change is a configuration of a UI- and that can be much easier
adjusted (not when stacked as today). I keep the ticket open in case of
different opinions.

[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 124649] Menubar: Show icons for the most important items

The MSDN guideline [1] says:

Consider providing menu item icons for:

* The most commonly used items.
* Menu items whose icon is standard or well known.
* Menu items whose icon well illustrates what the command does.

Don't feel obligated to provide icons for commands that don't have a standard
visualization. Cryptic icons aren’t helpful, create visual clutter, and prevent
users from focusing on the important menu items.

That makes a lot of sense as the use case of icons is primarily not being a
visual candy but an eye-catcher for frequently used items. If we show an icon
one every single item the user finds to visual attractor and gets rather
disturbed. So a +1 to this change. The circumstance is covered in our HIG by
the mentioned sentence.

Question is, of course, what items are "most commonly used" and "well-known
standards". But that's a detail question and better handled at the patch or per
follow-up.

Providing Regina's comment 6 we should introduce a button next to border (like
we do for other options) that allows to tweak the border of form controls.

Definitely a WF from my side (reopen if you disagree). LOOL is a website and
the statusbar is presented in the browser. It has a predefined height that's
way too small for inputs controls. KDE apps such as Kate don't have any
statusbar and do the same as us: the F toolbar pops up at the bottom of the
application. And last but not least, the statusbar's purpos is to show a status
not being a space for controls (sidenote: same applies for main menu/toolbar
and Gnome killed it).

The use case is pretty clear - excellent report, thanks a lot - but the topic
is not new. It's discussed under the terms Sidebar and Deck [1] (a special node
in the Navigator (F5) might not so well suited) in bug 95405 and I resolve your
ticket as duplicate. Many thanks for reporting anyway.

(In reply to V Stuart Foote from comment #1)
> Not sure we'd be able or want to assign icons to the Toolbars where the

We talked about this recently at bug 123261 where the decision was made to have
icons next to radio buttons. Personally, I dislike too many icons because the
UI becomes more noisy; in particular with monochrome icons nothing pops-out and
I have to concentrate on the actual label away from the limelighting icons.
