Redundant information is not bad per se, the toolbar button is primarily meant to run an action but not to give feedback, and with the Notebookbar UI it's not guaranteed to see the toolbar info. I like the tool tips for the status bar control better than the one in the toolbar. The status control shows the following tool tips: "The document has been modified. Click to save the document." Bug 84198 was filed before we added the modification status to the save icon. See https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/libreoffice/2015-December/071519.html for the discussion about that.
