Indeed. IIRC that is an already older bug: the menu doesn't show which one is
currently selected.

One of the reasons to recommend this was also that all office suites that use
'As Character' set it as align top, and none of them have vertical alignment
options.

The alignment buttons simply set the position of the image according to its
margins and you cant think of it the same way that you think of text alignment.

For me it would depend on the specific circumstances (mostly probably at the
end of a sentence Base At Bottom, within a sentence Base At Top, for a bulleted
list Base in Middle).
Therefore, I am also a little bit undecided, but probably I would also prefer
Base At Top as a standard.
