Wasn't easy for me to repro the tooltip; one has to place cursor and mouse
pointer at the right positions (never run into the trouble with those tooltips
therefore).

Besides the expert option, which is always on the table, I wonder if we can
drop the tips as they are not very supportive.

Switching the default is the easiest of all.

The icon theme is already in a good shape so what I wonder is if there is
someone that would be against making it the default and why? Also as we don't
support XP and Vista anymore I wonder if we should make it default for Windows
7 and newer too?

Screenshot of the issue

To rephrase: The comment indicator is hardly recognizable for cells with red
background, for instance in case of conditional formatting with color scale.

The triangle has a white border so it's not such a big issue. Also, I'd prefer
fix colors rather than any manual selection (would be nasty to define it for
every comment) or some automatic inverted color. The actual problem is that
color must not be used as primary indicator and the better solution would have
been an icon. My take is WONTFIX.

The workaround is to activate comments per View > Comments (admittedly not
working in all cases).

Okay, so the requirement is:
Benjamin wants to highlight/select a single cell in order to... ? (Guess you
will find a reason for cell selection that is different to content selection.)

Supposed workflow is to use Table > Select > Cell.
Workaround would be so select the paragraph (ctrl+a or shift+ctrl+down), extend
the selection by shift+down, and shrink the selection with shift+up (works also
with the mouse.)

Agree with Dieter's comment 2, if we really need that function.

We need ESC approval to backport to 6.0 to expose the new Windows 10 friendly
icons (bug 115867) as a late feature. And with that, go ahead and make Colibre
default for all Windows users on builds of master toward 6.1--it is fine on 8,
8.1 and 10 and just a little rough on Windows 7, but that is fine.

Great overview. Would prefer single tickets for every issue and this could be
the meta ticket. But that's up to the QA folks.

Issues are easy to solve for beginners, example is
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/#/c/43964/ for bug 67670. We carefully choose
0.5cm there (column gutter) which converts to 0.19685 inches (the actual value
depends on Tools > Options > Writer > General).

Summarizing, I'm not so sure that harmonizing is the best solution but 0.01cm
is definitely bad as well as 1cm.

Not sure if I understand this correctly. The "New styles from selection" (and
Fill Format mode) are both deactivated in general for:
* Frame styles
* List Styles

New styles can be added by right click -> New. But not with the hamburger menu

However, I'm still convinced about the limitation/ (forced) workflow.
* It is quite unintuitive. It can be explained but, not obvious. The hamburger
menu mostly works. My first thought: I'm not able to add new styles (similar to
the 'Table styles" behavior).
* How do load some new list styles in advance -> can't be done until I created
a random bullet list. Strange limitation.
* Right click within the styles Column -> New is still possible. Looks like
the same function to me...

Ordinary message dialogs don't have help buttons, for example close without

There is an icon "Cell" in the table toolbar to select the cell, where the
cursor is. If you already use the mouse, it is a single click. The associated
command is ".uno:EntireCell". In the customize dialog it is named "Select
Cell". You can assign a short cut key or put it into context menu. Perhaps
something can be predefined?

You need to select a single cell for to apply boarders to a single cell. Word
has the option "cell" in the border dialog, so it has no need for such a
click-select. LibreOffice has the option "cell" only in the background color
dialog.

Seems you are talking about two topics. The first is the "complementary"
highlighting. Highlighting parts of the paragraph is done by character styles
with, for example, strong emphasis to make the selection bold. If you change
the paragraph style itself to bold your emphasis wouldn't work anymore. But I
disagree with a toggle feature, that's not how word processors work.
Furthermore it's a good idea to not modify the mother of styles if you use
different children. That brings me to the second topic, which is the
hierarchy/dependency. This topic is being discussed in another ticket; don't
find it right now. I vote to resolve this issue as WONTFIX.

> @Regina: Any format restrictions?

Yes. You need the attribute style:first-page-number of the
page-layout-properties. Notice, that this is different from Writer. There it is
the attribute style:page-number of the table-properties or paragraph-properties
respectively.

The attribute style:first-page-number can have the value type "positiveInteger"
or the keyword "continue".
http://docs.oasis-open.org/office/v1.2/os/OpenDocument-v1.2-os-part1.html#property-style_first-page-number

So especially 0 is not allowed. An OASIS issue to allow 0 too does not exist
yet. The corresponding issue for style:page-number is
https://issues.oasis-open.org/browse/OFFICE-3923.

Currently the attribute style:first-page-number is ignored by LibreOffice.

(In reply to Regina Henschel from comment #4)

But "any" number (unsigned short or char makes sense) greater than zero would
be compliant with the format, right?

"positiveInteger" is defined at
https://www.w3.org/TR/2004/REC-xmlschema-2-20041028/#positiveInteger

I do not understand your question. Numbers are always characters in file text,
because file text is XML. And because it is not implemented, there exists no
model. It is up to the implementer to make a model. And the model need not be
the same as the UI. In most cases conversions between model and UI are made.

Tomaž may have better insight--but I believe this has more to do with internals
of handling the SVG (and other vector formats). We keep the SVG (as we should
for print/export fidelity) but consume the image as raster--PNG or SVM--needed
to compose the document.

Believe the conversion happens on first filter import of the image, and there
after we work with it as raster, including save and reopen of the ODT.

Personally I have no issue with the increased size as I am assured consistent
quality of the raster. While repeatedly filter import of the SVG (or other
vector format) images is expensive--and is error prone to the layout/layering
of elements on the document.

Having the vector images available for higher resolution of export and printing
alone remains reasonable.

Removing B̶r̶e̶e̶z̶e̶ from the title. Colibre has been designed to be Windows
theme friendly (bug 115867) and is a better solution for all supported Windows
builds than Breeze/Sifr as replacement for Tango/Galaxy legacy default for
Windows.

[Libreoffice-ux-advise] [Bug 114886] [Sidebar: Styles and formatting] Implementing the styles views as filters

2018-03-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=114886

A huge drawback of the current, messy hierarchical view is that since it is not
usable as it is due to all styles being listed whether or not they are applied,
one cannot easily know which paragraph style is inheriting properties from
which other style in a glance. This causes a huge problem later when you want
to change levels or other organizational settings and suddenly see seemingly
unrelated styles are being "randomly" changed as a consequence (of course it is
not random, and they are inheriting properties from the style you just changed,
but you cannot see that). This, in my opinion, defeats the whole purpose of the
hierarchical view.

With a clean hierarchical view, as is suggested in the OP, and proper branch
lines that visually connect and separate each branch from others, for the
Applied Styles, one can easily see and understand what is going on.

I am not sure. On my system, a Windows 10, x64, it looks awful. I attached
another screenshot, which shows how it looks like on my system at best.

Now you mix-up different topics. Let's focus on the design question, showing
tree lines to support the hierarchy.

The option Hierarchical being orthogonal or rather additional to the filters
All styles, Applied, Hidden etc. is a different question and likely discussed
in other tickets.

Actually, the tooltips appear whichever horizontal or vertical line of the
table I hover over with the mouse.

I had an idea that making the tooltip semi-transparent could solve the problem.
I created a sample with gimp and it is not good. Depending on the transparency
level, either the tooltip itself or the content behind it, one of them is hard
to read. I'm just writing it so that you don't waste your time with it. :)

I attach a gimp file if you want to play with the transparency and a *.png to
show how it looks with transparency=50%.

Hierarchical tree branch view in another word-processor

Hierarchical tree lines that connects the branches as they appear nested inside
one another also make the Hierarchical view a lot more readable. This
screenshot shows how it is done in another word-processor.
