Interesting, perhaps this wiki for Libre Learn Lab can be placed in
LibrePlanet wiki, because, of course, it's not restricted to free/libre
software "development", but can be used to organize every action
involving free/libre software. :)

Re: [libreplanet-discuss] Free software K-12 schools and colleges

2017-04-08 Thread Mariah Noelle Villarreal
Hey everyone,

I'm starting a wiki for Libre Learn Lab, a volunteer community which
addresses freely licensed tools and resources in learning environments (K12
schools, universities, after school programs, etc). As soon as it's ready
(next couple of days), I'll send a link to the list.

This is a bit dense. I apologize to anyone not (yet hopefully) familiar
with all of this, just trying to cover all of the specific bases. I hope
it's clear!

One of the goals is to make a list of learning environments using mostly,
or even more awesomely all, free software with contact information, so we
can then document best practices in getting free software used more widely
in these specific environments.

Other current goals are to:
1. Create resources for caretakers to advocate on behalf of their children
2. Create guides on how to switch from proprietary software x to free
software y (installing, getting started projects with screenshots, video
with narration etc)
3. Create a guide on how to create portfolios of learners work with free
software
4. Document learners experiences using/making/changing/distributing free
software.
5. Recruit education/learning/school community members like caretakers,
teachers/facilitators, students/learners, IT admins, school admins, after
school admins, etc.

Let me know if you're interested in helping out!

In the US, Charlie Reisinger has made some progress in the Penn Manor School
District. I think there s some non free software in the mix but his program
is a step in the right direction. Here are some notes and links I have kept
about it. Best of luck, wherever you are.

Set up a one GNU/Laptop per child program at Penn Manor High School

http://opensource.com/education/14/9/open-source-high-school
https://joindiaspora.com/posts/4709855

Program might be thwarted by CIPA the Children’s Online Protection Act which
requires censorship software on every student laptop.

http://www.pennmanor.net/techblog/?p=1847

This page has policy documents that conform with that nasty law. The titles
look just like my daughter's in Alabama.

Actually CIPA Children's Internet Protection Act not COPA.

Open Source Evangelist, Lancaster PA

Hi Vito: The LibrePlanet Ontario group meets once a month, usually
online with Mumble, but in the past some of us were meeting
semi-regularly in person. You've just missed our January meeting, held
on the 24th.

You can see what we've been up to at

https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Ontario

We're currently pursuing two strategies:

1) Get the Canadian government to release electronic tax filing
specifications so that Free Software tax preparation software can be
written

https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Ontario/FLCTPSP

2) Planning for some type of educational activity once the snows have
retreated ("street team outreach")

Feel free to join us for our next meeting on 24 February 2017 (sorry,
I'm behind in updating the wiki and podcasts)

If you find even one such school, I'd be thrilled. It would also be
worth making a list of schools that offer GNU/Linux computers to
students, as a wider net to cast.

The LibrePlanet Wiki is always available if you'd like to make a
collaborative list: libreplanet.org

Glad to see people getting excited for LibrePlanet. It's gonna be a fun one.
