install?

I made sure to use the Libby's drive as the primary master, and the only
other drive connected to the desktop at that time was a CD-ROM for reading
the data.

Does that computer recognise the disk beyond 1024 cylinders? I've had
complications where I do some partitioning in the libby and some in a
desktop, in my case I ended up with what looked like 2 'versions' of the
partition table where some partitions were accessible in both cases but
both slowly got corrupted. I ended up putting EZ-Bios onto the drive and
making sure whenever I did anything to do with the partitions I'd boot off
that drive (if I was just copying files to it I found I could get away with
booting to the desktop's own Win2k install and writing to the disk as long
as I didn't touch the partition table).

Finally, I just bit the bullet and ran the install from the hard drive. 4
hours later, I had mismapped drives, so it's back to square one, but at
least there's a plan.

What do you mean by mismapped drives? If you're referring to boot.ini, just
boot using a boot floppy (format a floppy disk in Win2k (which
automatically does the NT equivalent of sys'ing it) then copy the boot
files across) with a correct boot.ini (bypassing the equivalent on the hard
drive).

However, and this is fairly odd, when I boot up using the only available
boot floppy (The Toshiba Companion Diskette!) I can see all the partitions
of the 12 GB drive perfectly.

Careful ... I've had a few cases (I can't remember how but it seemed pretty
inconsistent) where it looked like I could see everything from my libby
WITHOUT any overlay but then I found that if I tried to manipulate the
partitions I ended up getting weird results (such as having partitions
reporting larger than the drive itself!).

I'm in Win98's DOS at this point, but fdisk
seems to see them all, each partition is actually accesible, and I can read
and write from anywhere on the disk.

Hmm ... perhaps the Toshiba companion diskette has something we don't know
about? What happens when you boot off a plain vanilla Win98 boot disk?

Seeing as OnTrack was wiped from the drive and I'm bypassing it anyway with
this method, what exactly does this mean for BIOS version 8.00?

*shrug* I've not used OnTrack ... I know I'll provoke another flamewar by
saying this but I still recommend that even though Win2k can see past 1024
cylinders unaided that you use something like EZ-Bios (look in the archives
for a link) ... you never know when you may need to get into your
partitions with a boot disk. I also recommend NOT using NTFS unless you
REALLY need it for security for the same reason ... especially given that
getting into the recovery console on the libby is likely to be a complete
pain in the rear (and then especially if the MBR is dead).

Regarding your initial 'INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE' ERROR, I got that when I
tried installing WinNT onto my L50, I didn't try any further because I
managed to get Win95 stable anyway ... if you do manage to get this thing
working I might try putting 2k on my L100 as well ... hehe

I know the easy way to get this working is to go ahead and buy new Li-Ion
cells. However, it strikes me as odd that I've got two High Capacity 110
batteries, and a Standard, and they're all dead. Am I wrong in assuming
that I can get 4 or 6 good, working cells out of the 16 that are floating
 about these three packs?

If they're dead, pull them apart and check them

If it's possible, does anyone have an idea as to how I would test the
individual cell? I can get a multimeter pretty easily, but unless I know
what to look for, it's somewhat pointless.

A good cell has around 3v across irt

OK, stupid question time, since I'm sure someone on the list will answer
yes: Has anyone tried running WinXP on an ff1100?

Anything I should watch out for if I try it? Any chance that XP comes with
drivers that'll recognize the camera?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it quite possible that the packs
may be dead because of fried electronics as opposed to dead cells in which
case it's quite possible they won't charge at all?

Yup.

Hi,

I have a Libretto 110CT with windows 2000 pro and the dockstation with usb

It works excellent, but the usb port is dead since i bought the machine...
I've done everything but nothing..., i put some usb devices so i con see
if it recognize them but it's the same, it didn't work
also i update the bios to ver. 8.10 and still the usb port is not responding.

what can i do ? is ther a solution ? is the windows 2000 incompatible ?

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious but bear in mind the USB ports (and the
docking station's 2 PCMCIA slots) won't activate unless you plug the
docking station into external power ... also bear in mind the ports will be
USB1.0 (and won't run at full speed either).

I recall posts on this where some people hadn't plugged in the AC adaptor

USB port need to be powered.

Re: [LIB] Screen cleaning and AR films

2002-08-01 Thread David Chien

Date: Thu, 1 Aug 2002 22:03:35 -0700 (PDT)
From: David Chien [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: [LIB] Screen cleaning and AR films

Here's what I do to clean spotty LCD screens.

  1) Rubbing alcohol and lint-free tissue. Wipe and go. Forget about the
streaks for now; just concentrate on getting the spots off. Should take off
just about everything.

  2) Now, second pass. Not as damp with alcohol, but just partially. Wipe in
circles and passes to get rid of as many streaks as possible. Circular pattern
helps eliminate leaving more.

  3) Quickly follow up with the 3M Scotchbrite High Performance Cleaning Cloth
available at KMart and elsewhere (in the kitchen supplies section of Kmart) or
a microfibre lens cleaning cloth (sunglasses, eyeglasses stores). You'll have
to make numerous passes to gently, gently eliminate the streaks, but they'll go
with time. wipe with a barely alcohol or wet cloth if needed just before
making another pass to get off stubborn streaks.

  4) oNCE THE streaks are gone, you're at the stage where you're trying to get
the LCD 100% dust and mark free. Should be decently easy if you have a clean
cleaning cloth in hand, and for me, didn't take that long at all. At this
point, anything that does land on it between this and applying the film can
almost always be blown off, or simply brushed off if you simply gently brush
the cloth over the LCD panel to sweep the dust off.

  5) Naturally, Once you're ready to apply the film, it should go quickly
before more dust lands. You'll want to brush clean both protective films on
the main film itself to get rid of dust that can fall onto the LCD panel during
positioning. You can try out various positions first just by laying the film
on the panel unpeeled, then when you've got the right position in mind, peel
off a short edge of the protective film on the stick side, and position that
end on the LCD panel.

Pull about 1-2 off and press the AR film on the panel to keep it in
place. Pull more protective film off the sticky side and keep going, pressing
down on the AR film as you go to keep it in place and MOST IMPORTANTLY to keep
the air bubbles out. Press from center out to get those air bubbles out.

Read my prior most on specifics of this.

Once it's all in place, rub down everywhere with at least two protective
sheets of plastic between your fingernail back and the main AR film to prevent
scratches on it, and after a lot of this, it'll look decent.

First thing I'd ask them is to check that the 2.5 IDE/flash adapter is
actually 9.5mm tall or less. Otherwise, it won't fit, which is the sad case
for all of the other IDE to CF adapters I've searched for before.

Some talk on this last year on the Libretto Mailing List archives.

Anyways, the only workable solution thus far given the lack of =9.5mm
adapaters are the SanDisk 2.5 IDE FlashDrives. You can buy up to 2GB models
today at www.buy.com and they will work just like regular IDE HDs in the Librettos.
