Tim, I have been using the 12v trick circuit for 3 years now,as described at www.fixup.net to power my libby from a small 7ah 12 volt battery, I get all day usage out of the lib. Some people are not happy with the use of this circuit and do not recommend it, each to there own I say. It uses a lot less poewr than an inverter and is the only way for me to have enough power when out hiking... My 50 had 95 on it when i got it and although i have been tempted to try 98 I have managed to hold off as I am terrified I will lose all my mapping data (5 gig of it!) 95 does everything I need, I rarely perform a shutdown prefering to just suspend each time I finish with the lib. On the other hand, there are shutdown problems sometimes with msgsvr32.exe in 95. 98 has a much quicker shutdown. [T2] I've have / had more shutdown problems with W98SE than any of them (on desktop machines that is) ! Lastly, rather than taking the Mini port extender with me when we are out on our motorcycle / camping trips, I thought about using a PCMCIA to Serial card to provide a COM: port.? I have found a source for battery packs that contain 12 cells identical to those in the 50-70 pack, however before I try them I need you guiys to answer a question or two... I have no way of charging these packs and I don't know what state of charge they are in, however I am getting about 2.6 volts out of each cell and on a full short they provide about 5-10 amps... so, I was under the impression all lith-ion batts were of 3.6 volts... am I mistaken? I don't want to put three in my dead batt pack and then over voltage them when they are charged by the lib... Anyone got any ideas? Neil? Raymond? (by the way Raymond, I am in Geelong Vic. where are you?) These packs (12 cells brand new) are available to me through a tech at a laptop firm, he hasnt got a price yet but he thinks about $150 AUD, for you guys in the UK or USA they would work out very cheap! If they work I can get a few... Next topic: Solar Panels While hiking I use small solar panel on the top of my pack (the weight is negligable) to charge a 7ah sealed lead-acid that beast runs the lib 50 for about 8 hours which is more than enough, it also powers my GPS, recharges my digital camera battery and Palm V, I then have moving map where ever I am as well as 5 gig worth of photo storage... Using a panel to RUN a lib is not worth the trouble, you would be towing one behind you on a small tralier to get enough out of it and the fluctuations in current would cause your lib to get upset and try to hitch-hike home without you... I run the panel through a regulator specifically designed for battery charging, Jaycar do a kit here in Australia for about $10.00. It can boost an input of between 12 volts and 15 volts to a regulated 15 to 24(!) volt 3.5 amp supply (without going from DC to AC and back again). That'd be more than enough for the libby (the libby's own switchmode supply is only rated at 2 amps). It sells for $90AUD (about $45USD I'd say). Unfortunately, the catalogue I've got doesn't mention a brand name ... it looks a lot like a slightly bigger version of those normal cigarette lighter adapters though - like the ones for CD players and the like (except those normally only convert voltage down from 12 volts where this one converts up). The panel is actually 4 single panels that are 60mm wide and 250mm long I got them from www.oatleyelectronics.com a Sydney mob. The battery is charged and I just keep it topped up with the panel.. I have no way of charging these packs and I don't know what state of charge they are in, however I am getting about 2.6 volts out of each cell and on a full short they provide about 5-10 amps... so, I was under the impression all lith-ion batts were of 3.6 volts... am I mistaken? I don't want to put three in my dead batt pack and then over voltage them when they are charged by the lib... Anyone got any ideas? Neil? Raymond? (by the way Raymond, I am in Geelong Vic. where are you?) I'm not a LiIon cell expert but generally speaking the voltage per charged cell for a given battery technology is the same regardless of capacity. Don't short the batteries out though, thats a sure way to kill them young - generally battery packs for laptops won't like to be discharged faster than 2/C (then divide by how many cells happen to be in parallel). Oh and I'm in Perth, W.A. These packs (12 cells brand new) are available to me through a tech at a laptop firm, he hasnt got a price yet but he thinks about $150 AUD, for you guys in the UK or USA they would work out very cheap! If they work I can get a few... Thats not bad! ... What AH rating is each cell? Next topic: Solar Panels While hiking I use small solar panel on the top of my pack (the weight is negligable) How big is this thing? to charge a 7ah sealed lead-acid that beast runs the lib 50 for about 8 hours which is more than enough, it also powers my GPS, recharges my digital camera battery and Palm V, I then have moving map where ever I am as well as 5 gig worth of photo storage... How long does the panel take to charge the lead acid cell from flat? Or do you charge it first then just use the panel to prolong the runtime? Using a panel to RUN a lib is not worth the trouble, you would be towing one behind you on a small tralier to get enough out of it and the fluctuations in current would cause your lib to get upset and try to hitch-hike home without you... Time for an easy HD upgrade! eg. unscrew two screws on the HD plate, pull HD out, remove HD handle and put onto new HD, push new HD in and off you go. IMPORTANT NOTE: On the L50 models, the baby won't like a 9.5mm HD too much until you take it apart and remove the foam spacers around the HD bay under the black plastic sheeting you can see from the HD slot. The L50 models came with 8.45mm HDs, and while a 9.5mm HD can fit w/o removing the spacers (many have done this by simply loosening the bottom screws a bit, squeeze the drive in, then retighten a touch) - the problem is that the RAM chips on the MB just above the HD area usually warp, then delaminate, leaving you with a useless dead libretto. Once the foam spacers are gone, there's an extra 1mm of space that'll take the 9.5mm HDs w/o any problems at all. That does not mean you could use it for 12 quarter hours, 15 minutes a day for 12 days. Rechargeable batteries simply don't discharge linearly. They self discharge, and the action of starting the computer will also suck a lot of juice too... Maybe you thought of this but the way I read your question it seems you are going off the power mains for 3 weeks. On the other hand, a big expensive solar cell might keep things topped off nicely. I later made a rain jacket out of some plastic bags but it's still hard to keep moisture out in 75 mph winds. Oh yes, through all of those 50,000 miles the screen has been up and exposed to direct sunlight and the screen is still pretty readable. And, as far as what the libretto needs in terms of power supply, you only need about 13.5 volts to initialize the power supply. Those of you who use two 1.5 volt boost batteries in addition to a 12 volt battery only need one. Once initialized, you need anywhere from 11 to 15 volts to run the lib (at least my 50). I can't charge the Lib battery from my bike because the voltage is only around 13.9 volts. You need something like 14 to 15 I suppose for that. And don't bother to argue electronics with me because I am far too ignorant for that. I promise I will set aside an hour this week to feel guilty for all of the anguish that I have put my poor Libretto through. I know I was taking a risk in plugging my little libby in to the car but I did and it survived, so did all the others that are talked about on Xin's site... For me the Libretto is impractical as a desktop machine, it's just too small, but in combination with a GPS it is brilliant for in-car navigation as well as hiking and camping. The cost of extended batteries (I would love a couple!) is insane, especially when one Australian Dollar is worth half a U.S. and a third of a Pound! The libby cost me $800 Australian including C.D Rom, network and modem card. This was very cheap and I could not pass it up. However, batteries are $140 for normal and $220 for extended, I cannot justify even one... I was put on to Xin's site and found the cheater circuit there to trick the beast into accepting 12 Votls as an input. The photos on the site and replies from users all over the world convinced me it was safe (replies are in the cool talk section). The battery is fused as is the Libby itself and the where's and how-to's of repairing a broken fuse are all shown and described. As I said, I understand all of the concerns and negatives of doing what I do, but having done it now for two plus years I am happy with what I am doing and will quite happily point people in the direction of Xin's site. It is the only practical means for me to use the Libretto's functionality. I do have an inveter mounted in my 4x4, and have on occasion used that to power the Libretto, however the current consumption, as I am sure you know, is well up compared to a direct connection. What are your thoughts on all of this Neil? How do you power your unit and what do you use it for mainly? I would be interested to hear from other users as to their uses and means in regards to their Librettos. I have been doing it with my Lib 50 for years goto www.fixup.net and look in the cooltips section that will keep you busy for a while!
