I'm getting nearer using 98SE!
I am now using the WDM driver/software set very slightly a higher version
number v1.05.1063 that works...partly!
I have seamless video, again using my external DVD-ROM drive, but no audio.
Also I can't play DVD's with a menu structure, only my own DVD's that play
without an opening menu? wheird!
I will have to now check a few things following your post Aviwhat are
the slight mods that you have made to your WDM driver listed on your web
site?
I assume that you have the DVD-to-Go working normally with video audio on
your libretto with 98SE installed?
The fact that I can now get seamless video playback (only) using 98SE is
pushing me to crack this one!
Cheers,
Mike.

Okay I got my Margi DVD-to-Go card to work under Windows 95, but now having
problems under 98SE!
Firstly drivers.
Margi's web site appears to be down, have they gone bust?
Anyhow I have managed to download drivers from Billionton suitable for W95
'MCI' v2.18 and from DELL suitable for W95 'MCI' v2.16 98SE/2000 'WDM'
v1.05
Note using W95 I used the MCI v2.18 successfully.
Now using W98SE I have tried MCI v2.18 and the driver appears to be okay,
but have no picture or sound, the dongle output may work but have not tried.
I can't get any of the 3 drivers under WDM v1.05 to work at all, I get the
message NTKERN.VXD device loader for this device could not load the device
driver

So for W98SE, should I be using the MCI or WDM driver/software set?
Does anyone have a set of drivers later than the set I have tried?
Any other tips, I am all ears! ...I don't want to go back to W95!

Thanks,
Mike.

I spent quite a few hours in the Sofmap store in Kyoto last year.
Loads of new stuff and components, also secondhand stuff. Nearly bought a
used Sony U101 but the credit card had already been stretched! Bought a 60GB
harddrive for my portege at half the UK price, high speed 16MB cache too!
I don't know if there are any good stores in Osaka, although universal
studios is worth a visit!
I found generally that in the superstore electronic shops, the 'export'
floor was a waste of time with little or no saving.
For example I bought an external sony dvd burner for only 80 pounds with
Japanese box, the same thing in an english box was double the price. Of
course the software supplied and literature contained in the Japanese box
was multilingual (and worldwide voltage), just like the double priced
'export' unit!

Lee I was disappointed with the L-series libretto when I saw them when a

The Portege range is a more powerfull laptop but still lightweight if you
like Toshiba's.
My Portege 3490CT is still giving me sterling service, now with a high speed
high ram 60GB harddrive, and can be picked up on e-bay for little money.
If I was looking for something small, the Sony u1,u3, or u101 would get my
vote, though still quite expensive even now secondhand, originally Japan

Can you tell me whether this is a 5V and/or 3.3V card ?

The specs on the web for your card just say 16-bit PCMCIA, not the voltage.
It may help me confirm whether my 3.3V 3com card will work or not.
I don't want to just slot my card in and blow it up !!!

[LIB] 3.3v 16-bit cards in a 50ct

2004-07-10 Thread Michael Heathcote
Date: Fri, 9 Jul 2004 19:22:48 +0100
From: Michael Heathcote [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: 3.3v 16-bit cards in a 50ct

I have just bought a 3com x-jack wireless network card off ebay for my
50CT.
I was careful to note that it was 16-bit, but forgot about the voltage issue.
Looking up the specs it is 3.0 to 3.6V, and I remember now an issue with non
5V cards in the libretto.

I found the following on the Toshiba web site FAQ:

What information do you have regarding the 16 bit/3.3V PCMCIA Card
issue?

If you leave a PCMCIA card in the PCMCIA slot of your PC system during
initial boot, the PC system BIOS will detect the PCMCIA card and send a
5V electric potential to the PCMCIA slot. If the PCMCIA card in the slot
is a 16 bit/3.3V type, it is possible that the 5V electric potential
could damage the PCMCIA card.

Please check your PCMCIA card, the user manual or contact the card
manufacturer / supplier to determine the specific type of your PCMCIA
card.

If you use or expect to use a 16 bit/3.3V PCMCIA card, we strongly
recommend that you download the latest BIOS to your PC system prior to
using the 16 bit /3.3V card in order to avoid any possible damage.

PCMCIA cards that offer a 16 bit/5.V, 16 bit/3.3V 5V dual support or
CardBus Cards are not affected

Reading this it appears that as long as the card is inserted after
boot-up, the 3.3V card will be okay ?
or is it the case that the Libretto 50CT can not supply 3.3V, and the
card will be toasted anyway with 5V ?

Thanks,
Mike

Subject: Re: [LIB] Sony U-series development team interview, exploded pictures

Having just come back from a 2 week holiday in Japan from the UK, I stumbled across a
departmental store selling used PC's.
I loved the Sony U series, they where selling all 3 models (used unmarked) from 90,000
yen for the U1, to 180,000 yen for the last model with wireless.
With the UK pound running at 190 yen to the pound, the U1 at less than 500 pounds was
very tempting indeed but alas, my good wife could not be swung another laptop blah
blah..
Holding and playing with one made it very difficult indeed to walk away.
My main laptop has been for several years now a Portege 3490CT, seeing a Libretto L5
in the flesh was a suprise, it was huge!, so much bigger than my old 50CT, and no
benefit in size over my Portege.
Picked up a few bargains.
An external Sony DVD writer DRX-530UL (latest model) for only 80 pounds. I think they
must have marked it up wrong, 200 pounds in the UK.
And a 60GB 2.5 9.5mm drive also for 80 pounds. This being a Toshiba MK-6026GAX with
16MB buffer and faster 5400 rpm. Thats going in the Portege, with the old 20GB
destined for the Libretto!

For anyone visting Japan, forget about the English speaking 'duty free' 'suitable for
export' stores, little saving to be made, unless you require a PAL video etc.
The Sony DVD writer was in a japanese box, but inside all the manuals and CD 's are
multilingual with a universal worldwide power supply, only requiring the 'kettle lead'
swopping for a UK plug version for a few pounds.

Cheers,
Mike.

Hi Matt,

The HD enclosure is made by Archos, called a QDISK P/N QHD-1-B, with a lead
terminating in a 16-bit PCMCIA card.
I bought just the enclosure, and originally used my redundant 800MB 50CT hard drive.
It will take any 2.5 inch drive up to about 18mm thick. I swop drives around,
presently a 6GB drive, and when I want to re-format my present libretto drive (10GB),
I format in the libretto, and then swop into the HD enclosure to copy the installation
files onto the drive using my Portege laptop. Very handy, plug and play even with
Windows 98SE.
The DVD drive that I use is by ARGOSY, a DV730-04. Again with a 16-bit PCMCIA card,
with no external power. Interestingly if you use an ac adaptor with this drive, the
requirement is 1 Amp as stated on the back of the drive.

Mike.

Another alternative is of course to use an enclosure with a PCMCIA card instead.
I have used such an external HD with a Toshiba 9.5 mm 6GB hard drive inside, with my
50CT for years. I works fine without an external power supply, althought you can
supply it directly with power as well.
Also no problem using an external DVD drive, again powered through the PCMCIA slot
only.
I do not know how much power the PCMCIA slot can deliver directly in this way, but it
has been no bother.

Re: [LIB] New battery vs new toshiba : Portege ?

From: Michael Heathcote [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: [LIB] New battery vs new toshiba : Portege ?

I bought a new Portege 3490CT to (partly) replace my 50CT, as previously
posted.
That was about 3 weeks ago, and to date I am very pleased with it.
If the new Libretto L1 was available in the UK I would have considered it,
however as I wanted to do some video editing I would question using the
cruseo processor over the Portege PIII 700Hz processor.
The Portege is light(3lb), so you can happily rest it on your lap, and pick
it up with one hand with the lid open, just like the lib.
Compared to the equivalent Sony Vaio Z600LEK, the Portege has a bigger hard
drive (20 compared to 15), lighter, and has an IR port. The Sony has a
firewire port and memory stick slot which the Portege does not, however as I
have a firewire PC card, and no memory stick devices this was not important.
The Portege does not come with a CD rom drive, only a USB floppy drive.
However my Freecom traveller CD-RW drive is compatable with the optional
Toshiba external CD drive and will boot from the Toshiba recovery CD.
As per my earlier posting, a bought the Portege from PCWorld for just less
than 1200 pounds (manager special offer !), the Sony is still over 1700
pounds.
Last week I bought an external DVD drive from PCWorld for only 90 pounds,
and it plays DVD movies perfectly !
I believe PCWorld are clearing a lot of stock, so bargains are possible if
you look out for them.

HP95LX, Outlook and Rex

From: Michael Heathcote [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: HP95LX, Outlook and Rex

With regard to a submission by Martin, HPLX Sidekick:

Before I purchased my Libretto 50CT, I used a HP95LX.
Apart from running the connectivity pack for my HP95LX on the Libretto, I
was unable to translate all my many years of contacts etc to an up-to-date
PIM, the file translation utility on the connectivity pack never fully
translating all fields. The nearest was into Sidekick but not 100% all the
text in the ‘address’ section, the translation had a limit on the number of
characters which I always exceeded.
A couple of years ago I extensively searched on the web for a utility to
translate from the HP95LX direct into Outlook.
I found a HP program that was bundled with the original HP Omnibook to
provide the HP100/200LX PIM facility and ‘calculator’ functions in a windows
environment. This also had the facility to translate my HP95LX files into
HP100/200LX format.
The ‘icing on the cake’ for me was a utility by Curtis Cameron called
‘Outlook HPLX File converter version 2.16’ that could convert and
synchronize either way direct between HP100/200LX and Outlook with no loss
of data in any field, fully mapable.
For me it was a one-way ticket, as it could not convert direct from HP95LX
to Outlook, unless I translated my files first into HP100/200LX format, but
that did not matter, for I was putting my HP95LX to bed after 7 years of
daily usage.
If it would help you I still have the above programs that I can e-mail you.
The HPPIM is 385kb, the HPLX file converter 1396kb.
I believe they are ‘freeware’.

With regard to Rex:

I purchased a REX6000 in Singapore 6 months ago, which has the touch screen.
Xircon, or should I say Intel, have from the beginning of this month stopped
support and manufacture.
Although the software from Xircon is for syncronization with Outlook, the
Rex community is extensive with many dedicated people making available
usefull addin programs and syncronization software for other PIMs such as
Lotus Notes Organiser.
Check out www.rex6000.org

Cheers,
Mike.

Libretto GPS

Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 19:08:06 +0100
From: Michael Heathcote [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Libretto GPS

The software that I personally use in the UK is personal navigator, which
are basically scanned ordiance survey maps. These are not detailed to
'street level'. You can freely buy similiar 'autoroute' type software that
do go down to street level. All the above mapping software, when they state
can be used with a GPS, generally take the GPS co-ordinates through the
serial port of the laptop connected to the GPS.
The Garmin etrex GPS, I purchased nearly 2 years ago, is a mobile phone
sized unit, basic, cheap, but has data capability. The data lead from Garmin
plugs into the etrex, providing power (cig lighter plug) and connection to a
RS232 serial plug. The etrex then transmits a standard NMEA signal to the
laptop, which the mapping software understands.
Therefore any GPS unit can be used as long as it has standard NMEA output
capability, and any software that accepts the NMEA signals.
The mapping software generally show a direction arrow on a moving map, with
data logging capability. Software that speak to you is not as far as I know
widely available, or is very expensive (if anybody knows of a reasonably
priced UK packages, let me know).
The etrex is approximately 110 pounds, the data lead 40, basic software as
cheap as 50 or less. So for 200 pounds you can have a moving map showing
your position and direction etc on your libretto. Note that mapping software
is disk space hungary. Personal Navigator with the full UK maps loaded is
nearly 1GB. Hence the 810MB 50CT harddrive was swopped for a 6GB.
I hope this gives an overview of a Libretto GPS.
Cheers,
Mike.

Portege to accompany Libretto.

Subject: Portege to accompany Libretto.

Dear Listers,
For those in the UK, PCWorld are selling off the top model Portege 3490CT
for less than 1200 pounds, a few weeks ago they where 2000 pounds !
I could not resist at that price and bought one this afternoon.
The nearest form factor to my 50CT, weight, if not footprint (B5).
However 700Hz PIII,128MB Ram(256max), 20GB, 8MB graphics.

My 50CT has been my only computer for over 3 years, the lack of USB and the
640 x 480 resolution just too limiting for my only everyday PC.

However I will not be packing away the Libretto just yet, it will now spend
more time in my car linked to my etrex GPS, playing MP3's, and used with my
Siemens SL45 mobile phone via IR for remote e-mail access on the road (while
stationary !).

Back to the Portege, as Toshiba UK are selling half price Portege batteries
as well as Libretto 100/110 batteries, I will be buying a few.
Are lithium ion batteries better used in cycle, or are they okay to be kept
in storage for the 'future' ?

Cheers,
Mike.

Subject: 50 CT Batteries external hard disc drive.

Dear list members,

My standard 50ct battery is a PA2497UR with the extended battery a PA2498UR.

I have noticed that various suppliers list the standard 70ct battery as a
PA2452UR. Will this fit a 50ct ? Until I noticed the different part number
for the 70ct battery I was under the impression that batteries for the
50/60/70 where all the same !

I have an external hard drive case for my old 810 mb hard drive. This works
very well and is a "Standard IDE/ESDI hard Disk Controller". Pure 'plug and
play' with no extra drivers required.
Is it possible to access this drive if I boot the libretto from the floppy
drive with a start up disc, then swop the floppy for the external drive ? I
guess what I am asking is where can I find the necessary DOS drivers for a
"Standard IDE/ESDI hard Disk Controller".

The reason I wish to try this, is to carry out a clean install of 98SE, with
the 98SE CD copied onto the external drive. I do not have access to an
external CD drive, only by direct cable connection to my work laptop CD
drive.

Thankyou,

Michael Heathcote
