as for the daughter's laptop, do make sure you activate the Windows XP
firewall on all network connections, install a virus scanner like Norton
Antivirus, install a second firewall like ZoneAlarm or Sygate, a pop-up blocker
(Google,Yahoo toolbars - yahoo's if she uses yahoo email) on the web browser, a
trojan scanner like Ad-Aware SE Personal, all of the latest Windows Updates for
security bugs, and make a backup of the HD once done to CD-Rs for easy
recovery.

nothing easier than a wide open campus ethernet connection to get an
unprotected PC infected in minutes!

(or simply get her that cute, new iMac just out this week and forget about
the above -- Macs are just so much more secure) Too bad they didn't think
of putting in a TV tuner and remote control into their latest iMacs =(

Hm, what's 'they' in reference to? the colleges? Almost all of the major
colleges here in So. Cal have either ethernet and/or wireless coverage on
campus and in their dorms. it's almost impossible not to find a connection
nearby, and the wireless radiation shows up as bright as can be on
http://www.wifimaps.com/

Just drop in your zipcode and you'll be surpised how many wifi spots are
available -- also, how much radiation you're getting. don't be suprised if the
wireless keyboard & mouse you use + cell phone + microwave + wifi spots + etc.
all lead to shorter lifespans in the future folks =)

anyways, on campus, they're pretty much giving you an open pipe to the
internet, and of course, the most popular applications kids use aren't for
research and studies, but the usual music & movie downloading, chat, porn, and
other fun ways to waste time.

if you do have wifi on campus itself, it may be worth it to get a libretto
or a PDA with WIFI card so you can easily access everything online w/o carrying
heavy gear about.

Exactly right - free (well, sort of) ISP via ethernet at her school. So thank you all
for the recommendations, but free is the cheapest price of all!

You can pick up a wireless router for about $20 to $30, and a router can assign a lot
more ports than an access point. Access points usually only allow about 10 or so
connections, routers can do about 256 or so, probably 255.

get her a cable setup and buy her a wireless access point. the first 6 month for cable
high speed are 30US a month (after that it doubles) and the a.p. is less than 200US.
she can sell nodes at 5 dollars a month to pay her bills.
